KARABAKH’S INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION LARGELY DEPENDENT ON UNITY OF ARMENIAN PEOPLE – POLITICIAN

February 27, 2013 | 17:31

YEREVAN.- The unity of the Armenian people is one of the reasons why
we are no longer faced with the genocide phenomenon, former Deputy
Defense Minister Vahan Shirkhanyan said a roundtable discussion
devoted to the 25th anniversary of the pogroms in Sumgait.

“We are a nation that went through the bitter experiences of the
Genocide. Therefore, it is our duty before the international community
to do everything possible to prevent such crimes in the future. Why
genocides happen in the region? It can not be attributed only to the
mentality of the Turkish people. This must be explained by the nature
of the region with an obvious conflict of interests. Our task is to
be united and resist,” he said.

In his words, protection and the international recognition of
Nagorno-Karabakh is largely dependent on the integrity and the steps
of the Armenian people.

Social Commentator: Election Wasn’t Free But School Boycott Is Wrong

SOCIAL COMMENTATOR: ELECTION WASN’T FREE BUT SCHOOL BOYCOTT IS WRONG

15:57, February 27, 2013

Social commentator Karineh Hakobyan told reporters today that she
welcomed Raffi Hovannisian’s campaign of “love and greetings”,
because Armenian society suffers from a lack of polite social contact.

“We must change our system and our inner mentality. That’s why I find
Hovannisian’s message so correct,” said Hakobyan.

The commentator argued that the current political situation should
come as no surprise to anyone given that Armenia hasn’t seen free
and fair elections in the past 22 years.

“We don’t have an established democratic system that can ensure
free elections. We knew this even before the February 18 election,”
Hakobyan said.

She said that the struggle for democracy would continue as long as
the political system is tilted in favour of the authorities and the
opposition is marginalized.

Hakobyan also noted that she was opposed to the university boycott
now being organized by some students to protest the official February
18 election results.

“There shouldn’t be a strike. What connection does the political
situation have to do with education? Students can protest after
classes,” Hakobyan noted.

Satenik Abgaryan: Nkr Development And Prosperity Is Tribute To Victi

SATENIK ABGARYAN: NKR DEVELOPMENT AND PROSPERITY IS TRIBUTE TO VICTIMS OF SUMGAIT MASSACRE

16:17 27/02/2013 ” SOCIETY

A dead office dedicated to the victims of Sumgait massacre, that
took place in 1988, on February 27-29, was held in Armenian St. Hakob
church of Geneva. At the cross stone (khachkar) that is installed in
the churchyard ceremony of wreath installment has been taken place.

Representatives of Swiss-Armenian community have attended the event.

According to the RA MFA press and information department the
documentary “Ordinary Genocide” has been presented before which father
of St. Hakob Church Ter Hayrik HOvhannisyan and RA envoy and Minister
Plenipotentiary Satenik Abgaryan made speech.

Satenik Abgaryan has noticed in her speech that the Sumgait pogroms
were the continuation of ethnic cleansing that have been implemented
by the Azerbaijani authorities for years. Violence was shown over the
self-determination right of NKR people which, however, didn’t break
the will of the people who decided to stand for their independence.

Development and prosperity of NKR is a tribute to victims of Sumgait
massacre.

On 26-29 February 1988 in terms of actual complicity of local
authorities and inaction of the USSR government mass pogroms
of civilians were organized in Sumgait city of Azerbaijani SSR,
accompanied with unprecedented brutal murders, violence and pillaging
against the Armenian population of the city. Armenian pogroms in
Sumgait were carefully organized. At the meetings, which began on
February 26 in the central square, city leaders openly called for
violence against the Armenians.

On February 27 protests which were attended by hundreds of rioters
turned into violence. Armed with axes, knives, specially sharpened
rebar, rocks and cans of gasoline and with the pre-compiled lists of
apartments where Armenians lived the rioters broke into the houses,
turning everything upside down there and killing the owners. In
the same time, people were often taken out to the streets or to the
courtyard for jeering at them publicly. After painful humiliations
and torture the victims were doused with gasoline and burnt alive.

On February 29 army troops entered Sumgait but without an order to
intervene. Only in the evening, when the mad crowd began to attack
the soldiers the military units took up decisive steps.

The exact number of victims of Sumgait pogroms is still unknown.

According to official data, 32 people were killed; however there
is ample evidence that several hundred Armenians have been killed
in the city in three days. There is also evidence that the riots
were coordinated by KGB in Azerbaijan. Executioners of Sumgait were
subsequently declared as national heroes of Azerbaijan.

Students Keep Protesting Against Presidential Election Outcome

STUDENTS KEEP PROTESTING AGAINST PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION OUTCOME

ARMINFO
Wednesday, February 27, 12:52

Students launched another protest campaign against the presidential
election result in Yerevan, Wednesday.

To recall, by the final data of the Central Electoral Commission of
Armenia Raffi Hovannisian received 36.75% of votes and lost the Feb
18 presidential election to the incumbent president Serzh Sargsyan,
who received 58.64% of votes.

Like the previous two actions, this one also started at the Yerevan
State University central building, wherefrom the protesting students
moved to the buildings of the Medical and Agrarian Universities. By
a peculiar tradition, the protesters called on other students to join
them, while others demanded them not to hold them from lessons. Some
universities did not open the gates and doors to the protesters. The
key slogans of the protesting students are as follows: “We are the
owners of this country” and “Free, Independent Student!”

Earlier on Tuesday, the ‘student revolution’ was held in front of
the Pedagogical University, the State Medical College, the Sports
Institute, Academy of Art, V. Bryusov Linguistic University, and the
Institute of Theater and Cinema.

Violence Against Students

VIOLENCE AGAINST STUDENTS
Karine Ionesyan

Story from Lragir.am News:

13:25 27/02/2013

Yesterday, one of the protesters extended the middle finger in the sign
of protest to Yerevan State University, and her gesture was actively
discussed on the web. Many insulted her, while today someone already
hit the striking students.

As civil activist Ani Kaghinyan told Lragir.am, several dozens of
young men, probably members of the students’ council of YSU, in the
silent presence of police officers, provoked a conflict and beat two
young protesters.

Ani Kaghinyan said that the conflict continued in front of State
University of Economics, where several dozens of young men hit other
protesters and only then police officers started calming everyone
down. “The doors of YSU History faculty were closed, while 50-80 young
men gathered in front of the Agricultural University shouting to us
“Leave Turks!” They were throwing chewing gums and cigarettes on us,
and when we asked the police officers why they were not intervening,
they responded that they were throwing back what we were throwing on
them”, says Kaghinyan.

Students say the conflict is now continuing in front of Engineering
university. They are sure these actions are planned and aimed at
using violence against protesters with the help of police officers.

Calls for boycotting classes over “rigged” elections that have
been made by some students since Monday and the general activity
of student groups in recent days have elicited mixed reactions from
representatives of different political forces.

Some have condemned such behavior, while others have backed student
rights to actively express their political views.

Students disgruntled at the conduct of the February 18 presidential
election and mostly supporting opposition candidate Raffi Hovannisian
declared an open-ended boycott of classes on February 25, demanding
a re-run of what they claim was a rigged election.

Students, among whom are also young activists affiliated with
Hovannisian’s Heritage Party, have been going from university to
university, urging others to join their action.

In doing so the student groups have met with resistance from police,
university administrations, lecturers as well as some students who
are against “disrupting the education process” over political matters.

Some lecturers and university leaders have cited the statement of
the Ministry of Education and Science according to which “political
activities and propaganda within the premises of educational
institutions is prohibited by law.”

Assistant to the rector at Yerevan State University Gevorg Melkonyan,
who also heads the Union of Young University Students and is a member
of the ruling Republican Party, has been explaining to students that
this is not a nationwide movement, but rather a political movement,
and students should not be joining it.

“Yerevan State University stood up once, in 1988, when Karabakh was at
stake, and God forbid, if tomorrow there will be this problem again,
the university, all of us will again rise. This isn’t the Artsakh
issue now, this is not a national issue,” explained Melkonyan.

Meanwhile, most members of student councils of Armenia’s state-run
universities are also members of the ruling party, a circumstance
making student life ‘politicized’ per se.

In general, it appears the ruling party has also been using extensively
the resource of students for its own political purposes.

Political analyst Levon Shirinyan reminds of “organized” student
actions near embassies of foreign states, for example, of France,
in 2011, to say “thank you” for criminalizing genocide denial at a
legislative level, which eventually, however, was not upheld by the
highest court.

Students have also been used en masse for supporting the ruling
party’s campaigns, including during this year’s presidential election
and last year’s parliamentary polls.

As many as 150 students, most of them aged 18-22, were badly injured
in an accident at a campaign rally of the Republican Party in May
2012 when air balloons filled with flammable gas exploded. None of
the organizers has been punished for obvious negligence of safety
rules resulting in a tragedy.

“If society is getting politicized, how can students remain aloof?

They are part of the country and have attitudes of their own,” said
Shirinyan, who himself is a university lecturer.

Ethnographer Hranush Kharatyan says that it is only natural that all
political parties should be trying to politicize young people and
shape their own youth wings with which to implement their programs.

“Students should decide themselves whether they want to become
politically active or not. They are adults, they have their own
positions and the right to express their positions,” said Kharatyan,
reminding that students played a key role in forming political thought
in Europe in the 1960s.

The ethnographer also remembers the 1988 Karabakh movement, in which
students also played a key role.

“At that time, too, lecturers and university administrations told
students that they were wrong in getting involved in ongoing political
processes and that their duty was to study,” said Kharatyan, adding
that since independence students in Armenia have also been quite
active in political process, especially in post-election developments.

Serj Tankian’s "Mines" For Serzh Sargsyan

SERJ TANKIAN’S “MINES” FOR SERZH SARGSYAN
Naira Hayrumyan

Story from Lragir.am News:

12:00 27/02/2013

One of Raffi Hovannisian’s demands he presented to Serzh Sargsyan
during their meeting was to punish those responsible for rigging the
elections. A similar recommendation had been made by international
observers. Serj Tankian’s letter also dwelt on this issue.

The demand to punish for rigging elections seems very relative in
Armenia. Logically, not those who rig the election should be punished
but those who benefit from the rigged election. The legislation of
a number of countries clearly sets that if fraud is committed in
favor of a force, the responsibility is with the party, which must
be consequently removed from the race.

In his reply to Serj Tankian written in the style of a wise father of
the nation denies that the elections were rigged. The only argument
in favor of recognizing the election outcome is the famous conspiracy
theory. Serzh Sargsyan noted that if he follows the path proposed by
Tankian and punishes the falsifiers and tries not to be a dictator but
people’s president, it will be a mine planted under Armenia’s future.

Perhaps, Serzh Sargsyan means that the protests in Armenia are part
of the famous conspiracy theory.

Whether conspiracy, color revolution or uprising it is not important
but Serzh Sargsyan did not respond to the demands of his voters and
dismissed fraud and refrained from punishing those guilty.

In Armenia, opposition parties will not achieve publication of lists
of voters. Yesterday, an influential NGO expressed such a requirement
stressing that if the lists are published, the frauds may be found
to have affected the outcome of elections. Almost all the candidates
say there are lots of people on these lists who were not in Armenia
during the elections. But for some reason only one party has these
lists – the ruling party that has access to public registers.

Who do Serj Tankian and Raffi Hovannisian call to punish? The
representative of the commission who ignored ballot stuffing or those
who gave already voted ballots to soldiers and took them to polling
stations? Or the ruling party which ordered fraud in its favor?

Serzh Sargsyan proposed that Raffi Hovannisian get ready for the next
election in 2018, hence closing the latest election topic closed.

Apparently, it was decided prior to elections to dedicate the year
2013 to Serzh Sargsyan. Probably, the centers of power have reached
consensus over Serzh Sargsyan.

After their decision, Robert Kocharyan said he would not hinder his
compatriot, Levon Ter-Petrosyan recalled his age, Putin decided there
was no need to visit Armenia not to ruin everything. That is why he
is surprised now that someone disputes results. This election is mine,
says Serzh Sargsyan, and this is the only argument of the party.

Only people didn’t take part in the whole conspiracy. They decided
not to give away the election.
