ANCA-SFW ORGANIZES SUCCESFUL INAUGURAL BANQUET

ANCA leaders with the evening’s honorees

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif.-The Armenian National Committee of America-San
Fernando Valley West Chapter hosted its inaugural banquet on April 7
with approximately 250 community members and supporters conversing
upon the Sheraton Universal Hotel’s Starview Room to support the
efforts of the ANCA-SFW Chapter.

Among the attendees were a number of elected officials including US
Congressman Brad Sherman (CA-30), California State Assemblymember
and Los Angeles City Councilmember-elect Bob Blumenfield, CA State
Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian, Los Angeles City Controller and
Mayoral candidate Wendy Greuel, Los Angeles City Councilmember and
Mayoral candidate Eric Garcetti, Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul
Krekorian, Los Angeles City Councilmember and candidate for City
Controller Dennis Zine, Los Angeles Unified School District Board
Member Steven Zimmer and Pasadena City Councilwoman Jacque Robinson.

The evenings program included a video presentation summarizing the
activism of the Chapter during the past several years and a powerful
message from ANCA San Fernando Valley West Chapter’s Chairman, Nareg
S. Kitsinian, Esq.

The highlight of the banquet was the awards ceremony honoring three
distinguished individuals: Nichan Kulukian with the Hai-Tahd Award,
Armand Keosian with the Lifetime Achievement Award and Assemblymember
Adrin Nazarian with the Public Service Award. Honorees were also
presented with Certificates of Appreciation and Proclamations from
the United States Congress, California State Assembly as well as the
City of Los Angeles.

Among the speakers were Los Angeles City Mayoral candidates Eric
Garcetti and Wendy Greuel who congratulated the chapter on the success
of its banquet and both reaffirmed their solidarity with the Armenian
American community and applauded the continued efforts of the ANCA
San Fernando Valley West Chapter to activate the community and engage
the electorate.

In addition, Councilmember Paul Krekorian also spoke and congratulated
the SFW Chapter on a successful banquet and recognized the honorees
for their tireless efforts to support the San Fernando Valley Armenian
American community.

Congressman Brad Sherman also took the stage to congratulate the SFW
Chapter and the evening’s honorees for their accomplishments.

Congressman Sherman also provided insight on the successes the ANCA
and its local chapters have had in advancing Armenian interests
in Washington

Congressman Sherman presented Assemblyman Nazarian with the highest
gift a US Congressman can bestow on another public servant, with a
US flag that has flown above the US Capital building.

The program was concluded by Western Prelate Archbishop Moushegh
Mardirossian, who presented the evening’s Lifetime Achievement
Award recipient, Armand Keosian, with a Letter of Blessing and
Commendation from the Western Prelacy in recognition for his service
to the community.

The banquet was the first for the ANCA San Fernando Valley West Chapter
and received acclaim from elected officials, sister organizations
and community leaders alike.

“The banquet exceeded all expectations and was a complete success”
stated Shant Barseghian, chairman of the banquet committee. “We thank
all those who supported the event and look forward to planning another
in the future.”

The Armenian National Committee of America, San Fernando Valley West
Chapter advances the social, economic, cultural, and political rights
of the area’s Armenian American community and promotes increased
civic participation at the grassroots and public policy levels.

L’ARMENIE ACCORDE DE L’IMPORTANCE A SES RELATIONS AVEC LA CHINE

Le Premier ministre armenien Tigran Sarkissian a indique mercredi que
son pays accordait de l’importance au developpement de ses relations
avec la Chine.

“Les relations avec la Chine sont d’une importance remarquable pour
l’Armenie”, a affirme M. Sarkissian lors d’une rencontre avec le
vice-ministre chinois des Affaires civiles Gu Zhaoxi, qui mène une
delegation pour assister a la ceremonie de prestation de serment du
president armenien Serge Sarkissian.

Mardi, le ministre armenien des Affaires etrangères Edward Nalbandian
avait indique que les relations entre l’Armenie et la Chine s’etaient
developpees de facon dynamique ces dernières annees.

Pour sa part, M. Gu a affirme que la Chine accordait egalement une
grande importance au renforcement des relations et de la cooperation
avec l’Armenie.

QUE FAISAIT RAFFI HOVHANNISSIAN A MOSCOU ?

L’ensemble des quotidiens relève que le lendemain du rassemblement
du 9 avril, lorsqu’une altercation s’etait produite entre les forces
de l’ordre et les manifestants, le leader du parti Heritage est parti
dans la capitale russe pour une visite privee. Le secretaire general
du parti, Stepan Safarian, a releve que M. Hovhannissian avait ete
invite par la partie russe et que l’invitation lui avait ete transmise
recemment. Il a toutefois dit ignorer par quelle personnalite ou
instance russe le leader de l’opposition a ete invite. Les medias
citent diverses sources, certaines affirmant qu’il aurait ete recu par
un haut fonctionnaire de l’administration presidentielle russe, les
autres indiquant a leur tour qu’il aurait ete recu par le PM Medvedev.

Heritage a toutefois confirme la participation de son leader a la
manifestation du 12 avril sur la place de la Liberte. Plusieurs
quotidiens rappellent que lors du rassemblement du 9 avril, il avait
declare qu’il allait voir V. Poutine pour ” ramener la victoire
au peuple armenien “. Ces propos n’auraient pas ete alors pris
au serieux. Les quotidiens s’interrogent sur les raisons, buts et
organisateurs de cette visite, esperant obtenir une reponse de M.

Hovhannissian lors de la manifestation d’aujourd’hui.

DEUX GARCONS TUES DANS UNE EXPLOSION

Deux adolescents ont ete tues dimanche 7 avril dans ce que les
responsables croient etre l’explosion d’une mine terrestre sur un champ
de tir exterieur utilise par les troupes russes stationnees en Armenie.

Les garcons âges de 12 et 15 ans etaient des residents du village
Vahramaberd dans le nord-ouest de Shirak. Le village est adjacent
a une installation de 1000 hectares appartenant a la base militaire
russe dont le siège est dans la ville voisine de Gyumri.

Les enqueteurs militaires russes et armeniens depeches sur les lieux
peu après l’explosion n’ont fait aucune declaration officielle sur
les causes probables des decès.

Aghvan Martirosian, maire de Vahramaberd, a suggere que les garcons
ont fait accidentellement exploser une mine terrestre. ” Ils ont joue
avec elle, ils l’ont frappe contre une pierre, et c’est probablement ce
qui a cause l’explosion ” a-t-il declare au servie armenien de RFE /
RL (Azatutyun.am). ” Ils ont probablement pense que c’est un morceau
d’aluminium “.

Selon Aghvan Martirosian, les troupes russes avaient averti les
residents de Vahramaberd ne pas entrer dans le champ de tir en raison
de la tenue d’exercices frequents impliquant de reelles munitions.

Leurs exercices les plus recents se sont acheves vendredi dernier,
a-t-il dit, ajoutant que les villageois font souvent paître leurs
troupeaux la-bas après ces seances de formation.

UN QUOTIDIEN DE TEHERAN AFFIRME QUE L’AZERBAÏDJAN DOIT TENIR UN REFERENDUM SUR SON ADHESION A L’IRAN

Le journal iranien “Kayhan”soutenant la ligne ultra-dur censee refleter
le point de vue du guide supreme l’ayatollah Ali Khamenei, a appele a
un referendum en Azerbaïdjan pour decider si le pays devrait rejoindre
la republique islamique.

L’appel est le dernier signe de la deterioration des relations entre
Teheran et Bakou et suit une conference organisee a Bakou par des
groupes qui revendiquent l’independance en Iran de l’importante
minorite azerie, qui compte d’eminentes personnalites telles que
l’ayatollah Khamenei et le leader de l’opposition Mir Hossein Moussavi.

Les intervenants a la conference, dont le titre etait ” le demain
contemporain de l’Azerbaïdjan du Sud “, auraient declare que l’Iran
fait face a un avenir politique desastreuse a cause des sanctions
et de la pression internationale, et predit que les provinces du
nord-ouest – dont ils parlent comme ” Azerbaïdjan du Sud ” – iront
” inevitablement ” vers l’independance.

Les rapports indiquent que la conference, qui etait organisee par le
soi-disant Front National de Liberation du Sud Azerbaïdjan, a ete suivi
par des militants, des universitaires et d’anciens fonctionnaires
azerbaïdjanais. Les actuels fonctionnaires du gouvernement
azerbaïdjanais n’auraient pas ete presents a la conference.

Un participant a ete cite comme disant par l’agence de presse Turan : ”
Si le gouvernement iranien perd le contrôle, le Mouvement national est
pret a prendre le contrôle du sud de l’Azerbaïdjan “. Les separatistes
azeris, qui ont peu de soutien parmi les Iraniens, se referer aux
provinces de l’Est et de l’ouest de l’Azerbaidjan Iranien comme ”
de l’Azerbaïdjan du Sud “, ce qui suggère qu’ils ont besoin d’etre
liberes de l’Iran.

Reponse rapide

La reponse du ministère iranien des Affaires etrangères a la conference
a ete rapide. Il a convoque l’ambassadeur d’Azerbaïdjan a Teheran
et a averti que de telles provocations pourrait ” serieusement ”
nuire aux relations entre les deux pays.

Dans une lettre adressee a l’ambassadeur, le vice-ministre iranien
des Affaires etrangères pour l’Asie et le Pacifique, Abbas Araqchi
a declare que descommentaires contre ” la souverainete de l’Iran et
son integrite territoriale” ont ete faites lors de la conference. ”
Menacer et des mots biaises, en publiant de fausses notes et diffuser
des images offensantes a cette reunion etaient des actes de provocation
qui ne satisferont que les interets sionistes “, a ecrit Araqchi. Le
redacteur en chef de ” Kayhan “, Hossein Shariatmadari – qui est
considere comme souvent la parole de Khamenei – a pris le differend
d’un angle different.

Dans un article d’opinion intitule ” le retour de Bakou ” Shariatmadari
a declare que l’Iran devrait intervenir pour ” sauver ” le peuple
d’Azerbaïdjan en proposant aux fonctionnaires azerbaïdjanais qu’un
referendum soit organise sur la question de l’adhesion a l’Iran.

Il a qualifie sa proposition ” d’etape la plus fondamentale vers la
democratie “.

Shariatmadari a fait valoir que les citoyens d’Azerbaïdjan se voient
comme separe de la Republique islamique d’Iran et sont impatients de
rejoindre le pays.

Il a dit que le fait que seuls ” quelques ” personnes ont assiste a la
conference etait la preuve que les ressortissants azerbaïdjanais ont
assez de l’influence ouverte et cachee de “sionistes” dans leur pays.

” La conference a ete l’une des centaines de mesures conjointes par
les sionistes et certains responsables azerbaïdjanais pour contrer
le sentiment de solidarite du peuple de l’Azerbaïdjan avec l’Iran
islamique, et pour empecher l’explosion de ces sentiments religieux
et culturel “, ecrit-il.

La deterioration des relations

Le 4 avril, le ministère des Affaires etrangères d’Azerbaïdjan a
aborde la controverse en disant que les vues exprimees lors de la
conference le 30 mars ne representent pas la position officielle du
gouvernement. “L’Azerbaïdjan a declare a plusieurs reprises qu’elle
envisageait de poursuivre ses relations amicales avec l’Iran et
fait de son mieux pour les renforcer” a declare le porte-parole du
ministère des Affaires etrangères Elman Abdullayev cite par des sites
d’information azerbaïdjanais.

Les relations se sont deteriorees ces derniers mois en raison des liens
etroits de Bakou avec Israël qui vend des armes et des equipements de
defense en Azerbaïdjan. L’Azerbaïdjan a dementi les allegations qu’elle
a accepte de permettre a Israël d’utiliser ses bases pour lancer une
attaque preventive contre les installations nucleaires de l’Iran.

La condamnation d’une douzaine de personnes dans le cadre d’un reseau
d’espionnage soi-disant iranien et le concours de l’Eurovision de
l’annee dernière en Azerbaïdjan, ont exacerbe les tensions entre les
deux voisins, pays riches en petrole.

En Fevrier 2012, Teheran a accuse Bakou d’aider le Mossad israelien
dans une serie d’assassinats de scientifiques nucleaires iraniens.

L’Azerbaïdjan a qualifie les accusations “d’absurdes” et “de
diffamation”.

Quelques mois plus tard, l’Iran a rappele son ambassadeur a Bakou pour
des consultations au cours de plusieurs manifestations organisees
en dehors de l’ambassade iranienne a Bakou au cours de laquelle des
manifestants auraient insulte des responsables iraniens.

Les protestations et des critiques ont suivi en Iran contre le concours
de l’Eurovision de la chanson, que certains religieux ont qualifie de
” parade gay “.

TER PETROSSIAN CRITIQUE LES MANIFESTATIONS D’HOVANNISIAN ET COURTISE LES OLIGARQUES

L’ancien president Levon Ter-Petrossian a defendu ce week-end sa
decision de ne pas adherer aux manifestations post-electorales
organisees par son rival de l’opposition Raffi Hovannisian, en
affirmant qu’elles n’ont jamais constitue une menace serieuse pour
le gouvernement de l’Armenie.

Prenant la parole lors du congrès fondateur de son nouveau parti
d’opposition, Ter-Petrossian a egalement de nouveau defendu sa
strategie controversee de rechercher une cooperation avec Armenie
Prospère Parti (BHK) de Gagik Tsarukian. Il estime qu’ouvrir une
brèche entre des ” oligarques ” comme Tsarukian er le president Serge
Sarkissian serait vital pour un changement de regime dans le pays.

” Tout le monde doit comprendre une fois pour toutes que nous sommes
un parti politique, une force politique et nous rejoindre pour
soutenir des processus purement politiques. Dans ces evenements
post-electoraux, nous avons tout vu, sauf un processus politique
“, a declare Ter-Petrossian en se referant aux manifestations
anti-gouvernementales de rue organisees par Hovannisian depuis
l’election presidentielle du 18 fevrier.

” Pourquoi aurais-je dû me joindre a la campagne d’Hovannisian ? Pour
prier avec Gasparian Vova ( chef de la police) ? Croyez-le ou non,
en prier avec Vova n’est pas mon reve d’enfance “, a-t-il ajoute
dans une attaque cinglante sur le comportement Hovannisian au cours
d’une manifestation du 9 avril contre l’inauguration de Sarkissian,
qui s’est terminee en affrontements avec la police anti-emeute.

Gasparian avait escorte Hovannisian et certains des manifestants au
Memorial du genocide armenien dans la capitale immediatement après les
episodes de violence. Les deux hommes ont prie devant le memorial avant
de marcher vers le centre-ville ensemble. Leur apparition conjointe
a provoque la colère des partisans et des militants de l’opposition.

Hovannisian s’est declare vainqueur des elections immediatement après
le scrutin presidentiel, dont les resultats officiels ont donne la
victoire au president Sarkissian. Ter-Petrossian, qui etait principal
adversaire de Sarkissian dans la precedente course presidentielle,
n’a pas tarde a reconnaître ” la victoire ” de Hovannisian. Mais il
a evite toute implication dans les manifestations post-electorales,
en au motif que Hovannisian ne disposait pas d’un plan d’action clair.

Ter-Petrossian a insiste samedi pour que le HAK, Zharangutyun ainsi
que d’autres composantes de l’opposition cooperassent lors des
prochaines elections municipales a Erevan. Il pense qu’une victoire
de l’opposition au scrutin du 5 mai ouvrirait la voie a l’eviction
de Sarkissian.

Les representants du HAK avaient affirme, il y a deux mois leurs
convictions qu’aucun changement de gouvernement n’etait possible par
des elections, la culture de la fraude etant par trop enracinee dans
le pays. C’est la raison qu’ils ont invoquee pour expliquer leur
non-participation au scrutin.

Ter-Petrossian a ete elu samedi a l’unanimite president de son parti
nouvellement cree et egalement appele Congrès national armenien (HAK).

Il comprend essentiellement les forces de l’ancien Mouvement national
armenien(HHSH), un parti qui a gouverne l’Armenie de 1990-1998.

Ter-Petrossian et son entourage ont decide de creer cette nouvelle
structure, plus soudee au debut de cette annee, après une serie
de divisions au sein de l’alliance du Congrès. Plusieurs partis
et eminentes personnalites de l’opposition ont officiellement ou
officieusement quitter ce bloc l’an dernier, pour protester contre la
volonte de Ter-Petrosian pour former une alliance anti-gouvernementale
avec le BHK Tsarukian. Ce dernier etant un membre cle du gouvernement
de coalition de l’Armenie jusqu’en Juin 2012.

Dans son discours, Ter-Petrosian a vivement defendu sa strategie a
l’egard de Tsarukian, insistant sur le fait que l’un des hommes les
plus riches du pays est desireux de rompre ses derniers liens avec la
classe dirigeante. ” Tant que la riche bourgeoisie et les autorites
seront etroitement liees, il n’y aura aucune chance de changer quoi
que ce soit dans ce pays”, a-t-il declare. “Et nous ne remporterons
aucun succès.”

Ter-Petrossian a poursuivi en citant l’exemple de Khachatur Sukiasian,
un magnat qui avait soutenu sa tentative de revenir au pouvoir en 2008
et qui a perdu une partie de ses activites du fait de la repression
gouvernementale qui s’en est suivi. ” Imaginez qu’il y ait plusieurs
personnes comme Sukiasian et que chacun d’entre eux agisse comme lui
“, a-t-il declare devant les 1000 delegues du congrès. ” Les autorites
seraient impuissantes a lutter contre elles. ”

“Gagik Tsarukian a choisi la meme voie”, a poursuivi Ter-Petrossian.

“Il est sorti de la coalition [au pouvoir], n’a pas soutenu Serge
Sarkissian dans les elections [presidentielles], a participe aux
elections legislatives separement, n’a pas assiste a l’inauguration
Serge, et est pret a se battre lors des elections municipales. Comment
peut-on repousser une force qui contribue a la lutte contre le mal
et a son affaiblissement ? ”

Les critiques de cette strategie estiment quant a eux que Tsarukian
n’est qu’une marionnette qui sert a promouvoir l’agenda politique de
Robert Kotcharian, le predecesseur de Sarkissian qui avait ordonne
une repression meurtrière sur le mouvement de Ter-Petrosian en 2008.

Beaucoup attendait que Tsarukian, qui a fait une grande partie
de sa fortune sous le règne de Kotcharian entre 1998 et 2008,
se presente contre Sarkissian a la dernière presidentielle. Mais
il s’est subitement retire de la course a la suite d’une reunion
confidentielle avec le president en decembre. Les raisons de cette
decision restent inconnues.

THE LAST OF A VANISHING BREED

You might consider Nellie Nazarian a survivor of her cause.

Centenarian Nellie Nazarian with great-grandson Noah Aznoian.

It’s only because that’s what she is, literally: a survivor.

Nellie, 101, has not only survived the ravages of time, and the
struggles of family and life, but also the eclipse of an entire
generation.

She survived a genocide.

A genocide that wiped away 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman-Turkish
government from 1915-23. Gone was half the Armenian population living
in Turkey at the time, not to mention the churches and villages that
were left in ruins.

During the week of April 24, Armenians in our diverse community gather
in their churches and public centers to pay tribute to these martyrs.

They will not only honor the dead but the living.

And they will pay special tribute to Nellie for an obvious reason:
She happens to be the only remaining genocide survivor living in
Merrimack Valley and Southern New Hampshire.

The fact she lives in Methuen and once attended school in Haverhill
brings her closer to home, having worked the shoe shops in this city
before starting a jewelry enterprise in these parts.

Nellie used to have a company. When she began attending these genocide
commemorations in Merrimack Valley, she was joined by 70 survivors.

Slowly, those numbers began to dwindle.

Two years ago, my own mother was among the four who remained. They
would attend the commemoration, health permitting, look around them,
and note the missing. Who would be the last survivor, not that it
mattered to any of them, but to others paying homage? Who would be
the last to have a photo flashed onto the big screen and take a bow
before 350 guests?

In a world bereft by tragedy, desecration, massacre, and violence, a
genocide that annihilated the Armenians back 98 years ago has almost
been deleted from our history books. Very little mention is made of
it, thanks to Turkish lobbying that vehemently denies the truth.

And bitterly, thanks to the American government who refuses to
recognize this first genocide of the 20th century.

As we approach the centennial in 2015, efforts to get a film produced
in Hollywood have fallen askew. Attempts to get a postage stamp minted
by the US Postal Department have also been futile. So long as Turkey
remains an ally, justice will not prevail and precious Armenian land
will not be restored.

And people like Nellie Nazarian will take the disappointment to
their graves.

Nellie escaped the massacre in her native village of Chimisgazag by
taking refuge in the mountains with her family before immigrating
to America in the early 1920’s. At a time when decent jobs were at
a premium, she became an entrepreneur.

Throughout her working life, she operated a jewelry store (Nazarian
Jewelers) in downtown Lawrence with her husband Stephen, also
a survivor.

Together, they built a profitable venture through diligent work
and sacrifice. Stephen died in 1965, leaving Nellie widowed for the
past 48 years. She’s hardly alone with 4 children, 16 grandchildren,
and 34 great-grandchildren by her side.

More often than note, such testaments are given posthumously when
deceased members aren’t around to enjoy them. In this case, she is
hoping to make an appearance at the Merrimack Valley observance in
North Andover High on April 29 and will be showered with attention.

She will take her seat alone in the reserved section, looking to her
left and right to see her peers gone. A bouquet will be presented,
most likely by her 12-year-old grandson Noah, who knows his place at
these events.

If anything has impressed Nellie about these observances, it’s seeing
the youth being honored for their essays and newer generations stepping
forward to dance and sing and perpetuate the arts-a lifeline that
has embodied Armenian culture over the centuries.

Of the genocide, she has maintained an indelible spirit of endurance.

“God was with my family,” she tells us. “We faced all those dangers. I
consider myself very fortunate to have lived a good life and raised
an excellent family. My heritage has always been important to me.”

The April 29 commemoration at North Andover will begin at 3
p.m. and feature a musical interlude by noted Armenian soloists
Knarik Nerkararyan, Victoria Avetisyan, and Yeghishe Manucharyan,
accompanied by pianist Levon Hovsepyan.

Over the past 25 years, some $70,000 in proceeds has gone to worthy
causes in Armenia through the Armenian Genocide Committee of Merrimack
Valley. I’m proud to be a part of this experience.

21ST ANNIVERSARY OF MARAGHA MASSACRES

April 10 is the day of the 21st anniversary of the Maragha massacres.

On this day as usual the inhabitants of Nor Maragha migrated from Hin
Maragha gathered to pay a tribute of respect to the memory of their
co-villagers killed in Maragha by putting flowers on the commemorative
stone to the victims of Maragha massacres.

In her speech teacher of Maragha village Svetlana Harutyunyan noted,
“A friend of mine from Maragha once said she did not want to live after
the April events. Every year we sorrowfully recall the happenings of
our village but we must call the whole world to recognize the great
genocides of our nation and our village in 1915 and in 1992”.

Irina Movsisyan, an 11th grade learner, who has made conclusions
of the events from the stories of her parents told us, “My father
is from Hin Maragha, he misses his village very much. I guess how
cruelly they treated the Maragha inhabitants. He always says he wants
much to return there yet as it is impossible we must do everything
for the development of Nor Maragha.

THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE HAS HAD ITS NUREMBERG

It’s necessary to review the emphasizes on the path towards recognition
of the Armenian Genocide, Adviser at the Constitutional Court,
ex-Minister of Justice Gevorg Danielyan told reporters today.

He believes a stronger emphasis should be placed on the legal aspect
of the issue, on the judicial acts the Turkish Court adopted at the
turn of the 20th century.

After the conclusion of the Treaty of Mudros in 1918, Turkey launched
forced judicial proceedings, trying to call to account the leaders
of Young Turks for drawing the Ottoman Empire into war and organizing
the mass killing of Armenians.

The culprits were high-ranking party and state leaders. The verdict

out of 31 criminals – Minister of Interior Affairs Talaat Pasha,
Minister of War Enver Pasha, Minister of the Marine Cemal Pasha and
member of the Committee of Union and Progress Nazim – were sentenced
in absentia, as they had fled Turkey at the time.

The other 27 suspects were sentenced to different terms in prison,
others were justified because of lack of evidence.

According to Gevorg Danielyan, the trial of Young Turks is one of
those unique and indisputable legal documents, which proves the
genocide organized and perpetrated against the Armenian nation on
the state level.

“Unfortunately, when speaking about the issue of Genocide recognition,
we are more inclined to present historic documents, forgetting that
the legal acts are the most pivotal evidences,” he said.

Why does the world unequivocally accept the Holocaust, while it has
doubts concerning the Armenian Genocide?

“The evidences of the Nuremberg Trial are considered evidences of the
Holocaust. What’s vulnerable in our policy is that we do not raise the
issue that there have been judicial acts connected with the Armenian
Genocide,” the ex-Minister said. Furthermore, they were adopted by
the Turkish Court immediately after the genocide, he added.

Today Turkey is doing its best to prevent the judicial acts condemning
the genocide crimes from becoming a topic of discussion and is
insisting that those were adopted under international pressure.

These, according to Danielyan, are not strong arguments and cannot have
essential importance. These acts have never been questioned, which
means they have legal force. The fact that the Turkish authorities
released the prisoners under amnesty a few years latter does not
change the core of the issue, either, because the Turkish authorities
granted pardon but never appealed the verdict.

Gevorg Danielyan has undertaken the research of those judicial acts and
archive materials. He has prepared thematic programs for presenting
the results of the studies to intentional courts, organizations and
parliaments of foreign countries.

LEBANON’S AMBASSADOR PRESENTS COPIES OF CREDENTIALS TO ARMENIAN ACTING FM

The newly appointed Ambassador of Lebanon to Armenia, Jean
Makaron,handed the copies of his credentials to Armenian Acting
Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian.

Congratulating the Ambassador for the appointment, Edward Nalbandian
wished him success in his mission and expressed hope that the
Ambassador’s activity would contribute to the reinforcement of
historical and traditionally warm relations between the two countries.

Acting Foreign Minister highlighted that the reciprocal visits of the
presidents of the two countries in the past years gave new impetus
to the Armenian-Lebanese relations and there are new projects and
plans that are brought to life.

Expressing gratitude for the reception, Ambassador Makaron assured he
would spare no effort to develop bilateral cooperation in different
spheres. He added that Lebanon attaches importance to the expansion
and deepening of relations with friendly Armenia. He also highlighted
the great role of Lebanese-Armenian community in the development and
prosperity of Lebanon.

During the meeting the parties also referred to the developments in
the Middle East and particularly the situation in Syria.
