Yepifantsev: Everything Must Be Done To Prevent Syria From Splitting

YEPIFANTSEV: EVERYTHING MUST BE DONE TO PREVENT SYRIA FROM SPLITTING

14:59 18/09/2013 ” POLITICS

In all probability, everything possible will be done for Syria
to maintain its territorial integrity and not to split. However,
Syria’s political system may change and Assad may step down,
political scientist, expert on Caucasus Andrey Yepifantsev said at
the Moscow-Tbilisi-Yerevan spacebridge in Yerevan.

According to him, a change of the situation in Syria could damage
the interests of Turkey and Israel because Turkey faces the Kurdish
problem and Turkish PM Erdogan fears that it may sharpen.

“Everything must be done to prevent Syria from splitting,” Yepifantsev
said, adding that after Syria, the next target may be Iran which
cannot resist an attack from the U.S. and its allies.

“Azerbaijan may wish to join the coalition against Iran in exchange
for some dividends, including a possibility of attacking Karabakh or
some territories in the Turkish-populated regions of northern Iran,”
the expert said.

Bryza In Works With Turkish Company To Build Pipeline

BRYZA IN WORKS WITH TURKISH COMPANY TO BUILD PIPELINE

Tuesday, September 17th, 2013

Former ambassador Matthew Bryza

Bryza in Works with Turkish Company to Build Pipeline

NICOSIA, Cyprus-Turkey’s Turcas Holding company has submitted a
$2.5 billion offer to Israel for the construction of a 470-kilometer
pipeline between Israel and Turkey.

The company, affiliated with Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR,
plans for an undersea pipeline that will connect Israel’s newly
discovered natural gas deposits in the eastern Mediterranean to Turkey.

Mathew Bryza – the former American ambassador to Baku, whose
continued ambassadorship was blocked with the help of the ANCA after
the uncovering of serious conflicts of interest – is a member of the
company’s board and announced the offer worth $2.5 billion during an
energy conference held in Cyprus.

Bryza said the 470-kilometers-long pipeline would have a capacity to
transfer 16 billion cubic meters of natural gas a year. The former
diplomat also stressed that if the political problems between Turkey
and Israel affected the construction, all cost and responsibility
would be assumed by Turcas.

Meanwhile, Israel’s daily Globus said Turkey’s Zorlu Group was also
in talks with Israel regarding the building of pipelines and buying
natural gas. Globus said Zorlu, which was constructing a power plant
in the Ashkelon province of Israel, contacted the companies that had
shares in Israel’s natural gas region, Leviathan, and made offers
for buying natural gas and constructing a pipeline.

Israel’s government in June approved limiting natural gas exports to
about 40 percent of the country’s newly-discovered offshore reserves.

Two of the world’s largest offshore fields found in the past decade
lie in Israeli waters. Tamar, with an estimated 280 billion cubic
meters, was discovered in 2009. A year later, Leviathan was found,
with an estimated 530 billion cubic meters.

ANKARA: Arrest Warrant Issued For Key Suspect In Restarted Dink Case

ARREST WARRANT ISSUED FOR KEY SUSPECT IN RESTARTED DINK CASE

Hurriyet Daily News, Turkey
Sept 17 2013

ISTANBUL

One of the most controversial cases of recent Turkish history,
murder of Armenian-Turkish journalist Hrant Dink, restarts. Dink
family denies to attend trials of ‘crime coalition’s game’ as court
issues an arrest warrant for the key suspect Erhan Tuncel

An Istanbul court has issued an arrest warrant for Erhan Tuncel,
a former police informant and suspect in the resumed murder case of
Armenian-Turkish journalist Hrant Dink.

Tuncel had been released with the first verdict, which has now been
overturned. Dink’s family protested the trial and refused to attend,
saying “they are not a part of this game.”

“As the Dink family, we will no more be tools to the state mechanisms
that have been mocking us and we will not attend the hearings of the
retrial,” Dink’s family said in a letter published on the website of
the Armenian-Turkish daily Agos.

“The crime coalition that is called the state recommitted the murder
in every hearing, every day while it presented itself as if seeking
justice. That coalition is the crime gang itself that planned the
murder and then covered it up.”

Tuncel is a key suspect

Tuncel is seen as a key in linking the murder to the state institutions
as members of the Police Department in the Black Sea province of
Trabzon, the suspects’ hometown, have been accused of failing to relay
intelligence provided by Tuncel to the Trabzon Gendarmerie Command
in a report prepared by Turkey’s State Supervisory Council (DDK).

Dink, the renowned editor-in-chief of Agos, was shot in front of his
office in Istanbul on Jan. 19, 2007, after being repeatedly prosecuted
for “insulting Turkishness.”

The triggerman, Ogun Samast, who was 17 years old at the time of the
murder, and Yasin Hayal, who was charged with being the instigator
of the assassination, were convicted of the murder.

However, a high criminal court dismissed charges related to “armed
terrorist organization.” The Supreme Court of Appeals verdict defined
the acts of all suspects in the case under “an organization formed to
commit crime” according to the Turkish Penal Code Article 220. Hayal
yesterday denied that he was involved in any criminal organization
involved in the murder.

Around 200 demonstrators gathered outside the Istanbul court where
eight defendants were being retried after an appeals court deemed
they were part of a criminal conspiracy. Crowds accused authorities
of covering up a conspiracy by nationalist elements in the state
apparatus.

The crowd chanted “the murderer state will give account” and “we are
all Hrant, we are all Armenians,” holding up banners in Turkish,
Armenian and Kurdish. They see Dink as the victim of a shadowy
“deep state” network of nationalist militants accused of killings of
prominent liberals and Kurdish nationalists.

“This show must end, the real perpetrators must be brought to justice,”
Gulten Kaya, the widow of well-known Kurdish singer Ahmet Kaya,
told reporters outside the court.

Dink’s family and his supporters reject the premise of the retrial
that the defendants were part of a criminal conspiracy and argue that
the state was involved in what amounted to a terrorist conspiracy.

The case was adjourned to December 3.

Moscow: New Armenian Cathedral Opens In Moscow

NEW ARMENIAN CATHEDRAL OPENS IN MOSCOW

The Moscow Times, Russia
Sept 17 2013

17 September 2013 | Issue 5215
By Ashley Perezluha

On Tuesday, a new cathedral and church complex of the Armenian
Apostolic Church was opened in Moscow on Trifonovskaya Ulitsa near
Marina Roshcha metro station. The church is the largest branch of
the Armenian Apostolic Church outside of Armenia.

The opening ceremony was attended by guests from diverse religious
communities such as Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church
and representatives of the board of Muftis of Russia, the Buddhist
Sangha and the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia.

“Rising from the heart of Russia, the church complex will be the
spiritual and cultural center in the lives of those who – regardless
of nationality – considers themselves a bearer of Christian and human
values,” said Bishop Yezras Nersisyan, head of the New Nakhichevan
and Russian Diocese, said in a press release

The Armenian church complex was created from a community effort
that relied entirely on donations from benefactors, including
Samvel Karapetyan, the president of the Tashir group of companies;
Ruben Vardanyan, chairman of the managing board of Sberbank; Ruben
Grigoryan, president of Rutsog-Invest; and Vitaly Grigoryants,
president of Arch Limited.

“I believe in basic human values and the fact that projects like this
one bring together a large number of people from different spheres,
nationalities, cultures and ages,” Ruben Vardanyan said. Samvel
Karapetyan, another benefactor of the church, commented: “We are
delighted that today we have the opportunity to promote the spiritual
education and the preservation of cultural values [in the Armenian
community].”

The new church is intended to serve Moscow’s sizeable Armenian
community. While the official 2010 census recorded only slightly more
than 100,000 Armenians living in the capital, community members say
there may in fact be as many as half a million Armenians in the city.

The cathedral complex is only the fourth functioning Armenian
Apostolic church in the city of Moscow, though a number of churches
were destroyed or confiscated during the Soviet period.

The church complex has been under construction for eight years. In
2004, Russian Orthodox Patriarch Alexei II attended the laying of the
foundation of the church complex, which was blessed by the Catholicos
of All Armenians, Karekin II.

The church complex includes a main cathedral, a chapel of the Holy
Cross, an educational complex and a residential building for the head
of the Armenian church complex, as well as an underground church
museum and exhibition hall, a symbolic friendship spring monument
and memorial plates.

The main cathedral can hold more than a thousand people and has an
underground and aboveground parking area for up to 300 cars. The total
land area of the complex takes up 1.3 hectares, and the building area
encompasses 25 thousand square meters.

The first divine liturgy in the church complex will be held Sept. 22
in the cathedral at 24 Trifonovskaya Ulitsa. For more information,
see the website of the Russian and New Nakhichevan Diocese of the
Armenian Apostolic Church at armenianchurch.ru.

The trial into the murder of Armenian-Turkish journalist Hrant Dink
