MORE THAN 32 % OF ARMENIANS LIVING BELOW POVERTY LINE

YEREVAN, October 18, / ARKA /. Citing World Bank data, Armenian
Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan said today that 32.5 % of Armenia’s
population lives below the poverty line.

“Today Armenia is a poor country,” – said Sargsyan said at a media
forum titled “At the Foot of Mount Ararat” that kicked off today in
Yerevan. The Prime Minister added that the actual level of poverty
may be even higher.

Noting that the average per capita gross national income (GNI) is
only about $3,000, the Prime Minister said for the construction of
a democratic society in Armenia, it is necessary that this figure
rises to more than $12,000.

According to the prime minister, this is the prime condition
for emergence of a middle class, which ties its future with the
realization of its talents and opportunities, without just relying
on the government support.

According to the Armenian ministry of finance, the poverty rate in
2012 was 33.1 %, and the extremely poor made 2.8 %. According to
the ministry’s forecast, in 2013 the poverty rate will be 32.1 %
and that of extreme poverty – 2.7.

According to the preliminary data of the 2011 census, the actual
population of Armenia is 2,871,771 people, while the constant
population is 3,018,854 people. ($ 1 – 406.36 drams). -0-

JAMES APPATHURAI: NATO WISHES TO EXPAND COOPERATION WITH ARMENIA

14:08 18/10/2013 ” TOPIC OF THE DAY

I have had excellent meetings with Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan
and other senior officials and we discussed a broad range of issues
related to Armenia-NATO cooperation, NATO Secretary General’s Special
Representative for the South Caucasus and Central Asia James Appathurai
told reporters in Yerevan.

Mr Appathurai noted that NATO wishes to expand and deepen cooperation
with Armenia and the Armenian leaders have said that there is no
problem between membership to CSTO and cooperation with NATO.

Regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, James Appathurai said that
NATO is not involved in the settlement process and supports the
activities of the OSCE Minsk Group.

“We cooperate with both Armenia and Azerbaijan and during all meetings
stress peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,” he said.

There is no military resolution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and
compromised political settlement is the only way, he concluded.

A lawmaker of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia said Thursday
that he expects Armenia to sign a document with the EU at the Eastern
Partnership’s November summit in Vilnius.

Speaking to reporters, Koryun Nahapetyan explained that the Armenia-EU
negotiations continue today in different formats despite President
Serzh Sargsyan’s September 3 statement expressing Armenia’s willingness
to join the Eurasian Customs Union.

“The EU officials have not said no document will be signed. A concrete
document reaffirming the outcomes of the negotiations will be probably
be signed. As to what content it will have, that’s a different matter,”
he said, when asked to comment on recent statements made by different
EU officials.

Nahapetyan said that document will not be the political component
of the association agreement or the other document (on deep and

No One Can Determine Fate Of Karabakh – Gurgen Yeghiazaryan

NO ONE CAN DETERMINE FATE OF KARABAKH – GURGEN YEGHIAZARYAN

18:32 17/10/2013 ” POLITICS

Former member of the Social Democrat Hunchakian Party (SDHP) Gurgen
Yeghiazaryan is surprised that Zori Balayan’s letter to Vladimir Putin
caused such an active reaction in Armenia. At a meeting with reporters,
Yeghiazaryan noted that in our country, the public disregards the
major problems, yet it actively discusses Balayan’s letter, focusing
on a few fragments only.

Yeghiazaryan said that he sees nothing bad about the fact that Zori
Balayan mentioned the Treaty of Gulistan in his letter. According
to him, if the letter was a considered diplomatic move, then it is
only praiseworthy.

At the same time, the politician said, no one, including Zori Balayan,
can determine the fate of Karabakh. “Only Artsakh people can determine
the fate of NKR,” he said.
