CUSTOMS UNION ACCESSION NOT TO COMPLICATE TRADE WITH IRAN – MINISTER

February 05, 2014 | 19:49

YEREVAN. – Armenia’s accession to Customs Union will not complicate
trade with Iran, Economy Minister Vahram Avanesyan said.

“The main task will be improvement of conditions for bilateral trade,”
the Minister added.

Avanesyan noted that trade conditions with Iran cannot deteriorate,
since Armenia and Iran have neither a free trade agreement, nor any
preferential agreement.

“Armenia has the right to negotiate for better terms of trade with
countries outside the Customs Union. Similar negotiations are being
held by European states, non-members of the EU – Switzerland, Norway,
Iceland, Liechtenstein – on free trade with the Customs Union. We can
hold such talks with the target trading partners, for instance Vietnam
(one of the rice suppliers),”Avanesyan emphasized.

(ANSAmed) – ANKARA, FEBRUARY 5 – A church in the 1,700-year-old St.

Bartholomew Monastery in Turkey’s eastern city Van will be restored
and opened to tourists, Anadolu Agency reports. The provincial culture
and tourism directorate said that the restoration project for the
church was sent to the Ministry of Culture. The church had been closed
for years as it is located within the compound of an army base. It
reopened for religious services in 2013, when the base was relocated.

“We are planning to restore the church and open it to tourists by the
end of this year,” said Muzaffer Aktug, Culture and Tourism Director
of the Van province. St. Bartholomew’s Church was built on the site
of the martyrdom of the Apostle Bartholomew, who is reputed to have
brought Christianity to Armenia in the first century. The area around
Van is noted for its numerous Armenian churches and Iron Age Urartu
ruins. (ANSAmed).

Armenia Arrests Alleged Azerbaijani Police Spy

ARMENIA ARRESTS ALLEGED AZERBAIJANI POLICE SPY

Global Post
Feb 5 2014

Armenia has arrested a former police colonel following allegations
he was trying to pass on military secrets to arch-foe Azerbaijan,
the country’s intelligence agency said on Wednesday.

Ex-police officer Khachik Martirosyan, 57, was detained last Friday
after purportedly contacting Azerbaijani officials with the offer of
spying on his ex-Soviet homeland in return for money, the National
Security Service said.

“Azerbaijani secret services asked him to obtain military information,”
the intelligence agency said in a statement said.

“After acquiring the information, Martirosyan was detained as he was
trying to pass it on to his Azerbaijani contacts,” the agency said.

Armenia and Azerbaijan are locked in a festering decades-long feud
over the disputed region of Nagorny Karabakh.

Last month saw an increase in violence along the volatile frontline,
with both sides accusing each other of tit-for-tat raids and at least
four soldiers killed.

Armenia-backed separatists seized Nagorny Karabakh from Azerbaijan
in a 1990s war that killed 30,000 people.

Despite years of negotiations since a 1994 ceasefire, the two sides
have yet to sign a peace deal.

Azerbaijan has threatened to take back the disputed region by force
if negotiations do not yield results, while Armenia has vowed to
retaliate against any military action. AFP

Ignoring Azerbaijan’s provocations on the line of contact of the
Armenian and Azerbaijani armed forces, the OSCE MG may contribute to
resumption of armed conflict, Gerasim Vardanyan, Head of the Central
Board of ARFD’s Nikol Aghbalyan Student Union, told reporters in the
course of today’s action of protest in front of the Armenian Foreign
Ministry. The Union organized the protest demanding the OSCE Minsk
Group co-chairs who are arriving in Armenia today to fulfill their

According to Vardanyan, OSCE Minsk Group wages a policy of ‘double

more provocations,” he said.

The OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs Igor Popov of Russia, James Warlick

Police Contacted After Violent Altercation Between Imprisoned Politi

POLICE CONTACTED AFTER VIOLENT ALTERCATION BETWEEN IMPRISONED POLITICAL ACTIVIST’S SON AND TEACHER

02.05.2014 17:22 epress.am

The son of an imprisoned political activist and his military training
teacher appealed to police to intervene in a violent altercation
that occurred between them on Tuesday. Shahen Harutyunyan, son of
Shant Harutyunyan, and his teacher, Hrachya Grigoryan, both submitted
reports to the police. In the incident that occurred during military
training in School No. 139, Grigoryan said that Harutyunyan “hit
him on the head with a chair and caused injury,” while Harutyunyan,
in turn, said the teacher “hit him twice on the chest and caused
physical pain.” According to the police, medical examinations have
been appointed.

Harutyunyan described the incident in detail yesterday on his Facebook
page: “Today my day started well, everything was going normally. In
school, I recited the poem dedicated to my father; I received praise
from my teachers. I was very happy that the teachers said warm words to
me. It seemed to me that it was one of the happiest days of my life,
but… Let me tell you how the story began,” he wrote. Harutyunyan
claims that two weeks ago Major Grigoryan began to personally insult
him during class.

“I replied in a very civilized manner. Then the conversation moved
to the independence of Armenia. He tried to convince me that we’ve
never been independent and will never be, and this is all well and
good, since we cannot have life without Russia. He also said that our
fedayeen died in vain, that Russia is our ‘daddy,’ that we’re slaves,
and Armenia cannot exist without Russia,” read Harutyunyan’s Facebook
status update.

According to Harutyunyan, when he objected, Major Grigoryan said
he’s mentally unstable. “I have a [mental] disorder because I think
Armenia should be independent, and not being under Russia’s yoke,
Armenia will be better. He told me: ‘You’re sick; I have nothing to
say to you.’ And I said, better that I be sick than be a slave like
you. I said it and left. At the next lesson, today, while singing the
anthem, all the students laughed, including me. I too have feelings
and it turned out that I couldn’t help it and began to laugh. The
Major inflicted the worst insults to me, saying that I’m a sheep,
I am unworthy and a scoundrel. He threatened to beat me for laughing
during the anthem, but I didn’t reply, thinking that I was wrong,
you can’t laugh during the anthem,” he wrote.

Harutyunyan then claims that Grigoryan again insulted him, though he
asked him not to. “He said, should I take you to the room now and beat
you or should we go see the director? I said, you can’t beat him; he
said, we’re going to see the director, and we went. The director was in
a meeting; we were supposed to go at the end of class. We returned to
the classroom and again he began to insult me. I asked then demanded he
stop. I swore if he insults my dignity once again, I’ll hit him. And
he, knowing that, insulted me. I approached him to hit him, [but]
understood that you shouldn’t hit, and instead said like a donkey he
doesn’t listen to me. He approached me and issued a powerful blow to
my chest. I kicked him. He likewise kicked me, and I hit him on the
head with a chair. If I didn’t hit him, he’d kill me. I hit him and
left the classroom. All the students were in shock. Then they told
me that after I left, the major tried to discredit me, saying that
I’m instilling an anti-Armenian spirit. I returned home,” he wrote.

The paper says it has learned from sources close to the ruling
Republican Party of Armenia (RFA) that Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan

spotted his name.

But his spokesperson dismissed the allegations in further comments
to the paper. “The premier is personally interested in having the
matter cleared up,” he was quoted as saying.

The paper says that the topic evidently got a fresh start in the RPA
circles after the arrest of Ashot Sukiasyan, a central figure in the
