On February 14, President of the National Assembly of the Nagorno
Karabakh Republic, President of the Artsakh Democratic Party Ashot
Ghulyan took part in the 12th General Assembly of the European Free
Alliance (EFA). The President of the Artsakh parliament had arrived a
day earlier in Santiago de Compostela of Spain at the invitation of
the political leadership of the EFA.

During the plenary sessions dedicated to fundamental rights and
freedoms, the President of the National Assembly of the NKR presented
the path of the implementation of the right of self-determination of
the people of Artsakh, underlining that the Referendum on Independence
conducted on December 10, 1991 was held in full compliance with the
then acting legislation and the norms of the international law and
could be considered the first success story in the European area.

The meetings of Ashot Ghulyan with the leadership (Bureau) of the
European Free Alliance and a number of leaders of the EFA member
parties will take place on the sidelines of the congress.

the right of people to decide their own future. The right to
self-determination is the key element in the EFA’s program and
ideology.

The European Free Alliance has around 40 national and regional member
parties from over 17 countries of the EU, that represent stateless
people, the national minorities and regions of Europe. Among those
countries are Austria, Belgium, Great Britain, Germany, Greece, Spain,
France, etc. The AFA is represented in the European Parliament by 7
MPs who are members of the 4th largest faction in the European

"Armenian Architects of Istanbul" exhibit showcased online

“Armenian Architects of Istanbul” exhibit showcased online

February 15, 2014 – 13:58 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Istanbul Modern’s 2010 exhibition”Armenian
Architects of Istanbul” featuring photos of architectural structures
made by Armenian architects during the rule of the Ottoman Empire, can
now be seen online on the Turkish Museum of Architecture’s website,
Today’s Zaman reported.

A joint effort between the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture
Agency, the International Hrant Dink Foundation and the Solidarity
Association of Architects and Engineers (HAYCAR), the exhibition was
on display at the Istanbul Modern from Dec. 9, 2010, to Jan. 9, 2011,
as part of the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture program.

Now, art lovers who missed the exhibition can visit the virtual museum
to have a look — in English and
in Turkish. The show is on the website under
the heading “Armenian Architects of Istanbul in the Era of
Westernization.”

Curated by architect Hasan Kuruyazici, the exhibition highlights the
role of Armenian architects in shaping Ottoman Istanbul during a
Westernization process that took place from the 19th century to the
beginning of the 20th century. Photos of more than 100 buildings by 40
Armenian architects, from churches to mosques and hospitals to
municipal buildings, are being showcased.

The architecture of Istanbul would be unimaginable without the Balian
family – a dynasty of famous Ottoman imperial architects of Armenian
ethnicity.

For five generations in the 18th and 19th centuries, they designed and
constructed numerous major buildings, including palaces, kiosks,
mosques, churches and various public buildings, mostly in Istanbul.
The nine well-known members of the family served six sultans in the
course of almost a century and were responsible for the westernization
of the architecture of the then-capital city.

The Balians used Western architectural techniques and designs; they
did not, however, disregard traditional Ottoman elements. The most
important and largest construction built by members of the family was
Dolmabahce Palace, which is considered to be one of the world’s finest
palaces of the 19th century.

Most of their buildings are still in use and registered as historical monuments.

Another illustrious architect of Istanbul was Mimar Sinan (15 April
1489 – 17 July 1588) the chief Armenian Ottoman architect and civil
engineer for sultans Suleiman I, Selim II, and Murad III. He was,
during a period of fifty years, responsible for the construction or
the supervision of every major building in the Ottoman Empire. More
than three hundred structures are credited to his name. He is also
considered one of the world’s first earthquake engineers.

Sinan’s masterpiece is the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, although his
most famous work is the Suleiman Mosque in Istanbul. He headed an
extensive governmental department and trained many assistants who, in
turn, distinguished themselves, including Sedefkar Mehmed Agha,
architect of the Sultan Ahmed Mosque. He is considered the greatest
architect of the classical period of Ottoman architecture, and has
been compared to Michelangelo, his contemporary in the West.

Some 170,000 Armenian Citizens Face Risk Of Being Deported From Russ

SOME 170,000 ARMENIAN CITIZENS FACE RISK OF BEING DEPORTED FROM RUSSIA

YEREVAN, February 14. /ARKA/. Some 170,000 Armenian citizens are
face the risk of being deported from Russia, Svetlana Stepanova,
a representative of the Russian embassy in Armenia, said Friday at
a news conference.

These are Armenian citizens, she said, who long ago or not so long ago
traveled to Russia and have their permitted 90 days in Russia expired,
but still remain in the country illegally.

Stepanova said that their names are in the migration agency’s database,
and therefore after crossing the border they will be prohibited from
entering Russia again.

“An automatic system works, and it doesn’t depend on human factor,
and either Federal Migration Service or Federal Security Service adds
nothing to it,” Novosti-Armenia quoted her as saying.

Stepanova also said that those who committed two or more offences,
for example, breached traffic rules, are prohibited from entering
Russia for at least three years, and those Armenian citizens who had
been deported have no right to travel to Russia for five years.

Under the revised Russian laws, effective from January 1 this year
citizens of some former Soviet republics, including Armenia, have the
right to remain in the territory of the Russian Federation without
registration for only 90 days within every 180 days. This means that
citizens of Armenia cannot continually live in Russia for more than
six months. -0—

Students Draw Attention To Case Of Woman Protesting Outside Presiden

STUDENTS DRAW ATTENTION TO CASE OF WOMAN PROTESTING OUTSIDE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE FOR 1.5 YEARS

01.23.2014 15:03 epress.am

Mkhitar Sebastatsi Educational Complex students today rallied outside
the Armenian presidential residence in defense of Emma Sahakyan who
has been demonstrating there for more than 1.5 years.

The students held signs with red arrows and flanked either side of
Sahakyan to draw the public’s and officials’ attention to, as they say,
this special case of human rights violation.

Sahakyan has been protesting outside the presidential administration
since June 2012. During this time, she’s also staged a hunger strike,
which she terminated on the 21st day — at the request of activists.

Sahakyan insists that four years ago, her niece deprived her of
her apartment which was registered in her name and which her other
sister left to her in her will. For three years, Sahakyan appealed
to the courts, but she lost the case, since, according to Sahakyan,
her niece had produced forged documents.

When Sahakyan began her protest, Epress.am spoke also with her niece,
Susanna Margaryan, who said her aunt is defaming her.

“In 2006, my aunt changed her will and left the apartment to my son.

Apart from the will, she also made a donation. The owner of the
property, my [other] aunt, removed Emma’s registration from the
apartment. She is defaming me, and the press is reporting without
knowing whom it’s all about,” said Margaryan, adding that Sahakyan
has two children, who “have to help their mother.”

Yerevan/Mediamax/. Representative of the Russian Embassy in Armenia
Svetlana Stepanova presented the new rules of stay in Russia for
foreign citizens from visa-free countries.

Svetlana Stepanova noted that under the new law, non-visa migrants
may stay in Russia for not more than 90 days within a 180-day period,
Mediamax reports.

“Citizens from visa-free countries should submit their documents
for any type of residence, work permit or patent. Otherwise, they
will have to leave the country after 90 days and return to Russia
only within 90 days. That doesn’t concern students or the foreign
citizens who are in Russia as students or undergo treatment”, noted
the Embassy’s representative.

Earlier, a foreign citizen who had the right for a visa-free entry,
stayed in Russia for 90 days and returned to the homeland, could again
move to Russia already in a few days. According to Svetlana Stepanova,
the new rules are not aimed at toughening but regulating the rules
of stay of citizens from visa-free countries.

According to the updates in the migration law, foreign students in
Russia are allowed to work without work permit from January 1.

Besides, legal entities who are foreign citizens should submit a
medical reference stating they have no HIV and socially dangerous
diseases to get work permit from 2014.

Babayan: U.S. Co-Chair Sent An Important Message

BABAYAN: U.S. CO-CHAIR SENT AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE

14:53 14/02/2014 >> REGION

The peace process cannot be effective without Artsakh’s full
participation in all phases of the negotiations, spokesperson for
Nagorno-Karabakh President David Babayan told Panorama.am.

Mr Babayan’s comment came in response to the latest Twitter message
of U.S. Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group James Warlick praising the
recent decision by Greek and Turkish Cypriots to begin negotiations.

“Why can’t this happen for Nagorno-Karabakh?” the message said.

“The sooner Arstakh is involved in the negotiations the better for
all sides. In this context, the U.S. Co-Chair’s statement contains
a very important message,” Babayan said.

According to the spokesman, the peace talks should be held in the
format ‘Armenia-Artsakh-Azerbaijan,’ as agreed at the Budapest summit.

Armenia Can’t Handle Nymphomaniac?

ARMENIA CAN’T HANDLE NYMPHOMANIAC?

EurasiaNet.org
Feb 13 2014

February 13, 2014 – 6:40am, by Giorgi Lomsadze

The première of Nymphomaniac, the much talked-about erotic epic by
Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier, has been cancelled in the Armenian
capital, Yerevan, after theater managers decided to dodge potential
controversy.

The first part of von Trier’s five-hour opus of sex and angst was
supposed to open in Yerevan on February 13, but the management
of Cinema Star Dalma Garden Mall, part of a Russian chain, made a
last-minute decision to cancel the show, Gazeta.ru reports.

Families make up the core of the Yerevan Cinema Star’s audience,
managers said, and they may not want to keep up with the adventures
of a liberated European woman, played by von Trier’s muse, Charlotte
Gainsbourg. Hollywood stars like Uma Thurman, Willem Dafoe and
Christian Slater also make appearances in the film.

Granted this particular movie had jaws dropping in far less
conservative places, but the Caucasus countries are especially
uncomfortable with big sex on the big screen. Couples on a movie date
often depart from a theater if a love scene becomes a little too racy.

Nymphomaniac is also not being shown in neighboring Georgia and
Azerbaijan. In the entire neighborhood, only Russia has no qualms about
showing the peccadilloes and psychological torments of Gainsbourg’s
character.

The Yerevan theater managers initially cited multiple complaints from
the public as the reason for their decision, but there does not appear
to have been a major public campaign against Nymphomaniac in Armenia,
the country’s relatively conservative values notwithstanding. Some
movie-lovers have expressed disgruntlement about the cancellation,
however. The theater has offered to compensate ticket purchases.

In the South Caucasus, smaller movie clubs often are the outlets for
any daring or cerebral European cinema; mainstream movie theaters
like the Cinema Star tend to play it safe and stick with Hollywood
blockbusters.

Why the Yerevan theater decided to take the risk and show Nymphomaniac
in the first place was not explained.
