The Anti-Defamation League’s Deceit Helps Sink A Judgeship

THE ANTI-DEFAMATION LEAGUE’S DECEIT HELPS SINK A JUDGESHIP

Foreign Policy Journal
March 26 2014

by David Boyajian | March 26, 2014

After two fair and lengthy hearings, the eight elected members of
the Massachusetts Governor’s Council, in a 4-4 tie vote on March 5,
refused to confirm attorney Joseph Berman to be a Superior Court
judge. It was a defeat for Governor Deval Patrick, who had nominated
Mr. Berman. But the Council took its responsibilities seriously and
rendered a well-considered judgment.

Councilors voiced many concerns about the nominee. Foremost was a
lack of truthfulness.

Berman, under oath, was asked three times whether he had requested
anyone to lobby the Council to advance his nomination. Each time,
he replied no.

Later, after some stumbling, he admitted to another Councilor that
he had phoned State Senator – now Congresswoman – Katherine Clark to
lobby Councilors.

Mr. Berman’s meager criminal trial experience also troubled
Councilors. Another concern was Berman’s scant knowledge of drug
abuse. And some worried that Berman, politically active and a national
leader in the heavily political Anti-Defamation League (ADL), would
promote those viewpoints as a judge.

Several Councilors questioned Berman’s $100,000 in campaign
contributions, including to Governor Patrick, since being turned
down for a judgeship in 2004. They saw this as a possible attempt to
advance his judicial ambitions.

At his second hearing, Mr. Berman tried to deflect these criticisms.

He claimed, for example, to have misunderstood the Councilors’
questions about lobbying them. He also said he had been studying up
on drug addiction and criminal law.

Berman’s being a 19-year member, and since 2006 a National
Commissioner, of the ADL also caught the attention of some Councilors
and media.

Recall the ADL scandal that broke out in mid-2007. It exposed that
organization’s decades-old hypocrisy in denying the Armenian genocide
and colluding directly with Turkey, a major human rights violator,
to defeat U.S. Congressional resolutions on that genocide.

Shocked at the ADL’s stance, the Massachusetts Municipal Association,
which represents every city and town, then dropped its sponsorship
of the ADL’s so-called “No Place for Hate” anti-bias program. So did
Arlington, Bedford, Belmont, Lexington, Medford, Needham, Newburyport,
Newton, Northampton, Peabody, Somerville, Watertown, and Westwood.

The ADL scandal quickly became national and international news.

Naturally, the Governor’s Council quizzed Berman about his ADL
leadership role. He claimed that after the scandal erupted in 2007 he
and some New England ADL members tried to convince the National ADL
to change its position on the Armenian genocide. But there is no hard
proof of that. And surely Berman knew long before 2007 of the ADL’s
anti-Armenian stance. Yet he never spoke out publicly or resigned.

Even after 2007, Mr. Berman remained publicly silent about the ADL’s
indefensible assault on Armenian Americans.

Alongside the Council’s other concerns, Berman’s ADL record raised
doubts about his worthiness to be a judge.

On August 21, 2007, the National ADL tried to squirm out of the scandal
with a press release that used deceptive and legalistic wording about
the Armenian genocide. It implied that the Armenian genocide was a mere
“consequence” of wartime events, which meant it wouldn’t qualify as
genocide under the United Nation’s official definition. The dishonest
ADL declaration was widely rejected.

Nearly 20 countries, such as Canada, France, and Argentina, the
European Union Parliament, the International Association of Genocide
Scholars, and the Polish Jewish lawyer who coined the word “genocide”
in the 1940s, Raphael Lemkin, have recognized the Armenian genocide
of 1915 -23 committed by Turkey.

Many American human rights, ethnic, and church organizations have
supported the Armenian genocide resolution. These include the American
Jewish World Service and the Jewish War Veterans of the USA.

But not the ADL nor, reports the Jewish media, the American Jewish
Committee, AIPAC, and B’nai B’rith. They adhere to a long-standing
arrangement among themselves, Turkey, and Israel to deny the Armenian
genocide (see “History of Lobbying” at NoPlaceForDenial.com).

The ADL professes to defend the human rights of all ethnic groups,
not just Jews. It insists that the American people acknowledge and
pass legislation on the Holocaust. Yet the ADL tries to prevent
recognition of a Christian genocide. The hypocrisy is astonishing.

Meanwhile, a significant precedent has been created: Members of
the ADL, or similar organizations, who aspire to a higher post,
particularly in government, may now be asked what they knew of their
organization’s genocide hypocrisy, when they knew it, and what they
did about it. Such are the bitter fruits of deceit.

Their Policy Was Aimed At Destroying Nairit, Says Ex-Director

THEIR POLICY WAS AIMED AT DESTROYING NAIRIT, SAYS EX-DIRECTOR

14:31 | March 26,2014 | Social

Since 2007, the administration of Yerevan-based Nairit plant has been
carrying out a policy of destroying the plant, a former director of
Nairit told Pastinfo news agency.

Karen Israelyan, who was the director of the plant in 2005-2007,
says for many years attempts have been made to push Nairit out of
the market as the plant became a major competitor for Russian Bayer
company, strengthening its position on the Russian market.

The ex-director blames the current chaos in the plant on the RA
government, which holds 10 percent of the factory’s shares. “Should
the government control its stock properly, it could have averted the
unwanted developments in time,” he said.

“In August 2006, Rhinoville Property Limited purchased 90% of the
stock in the Nairit rubber plant from HayGazArd for US $40 million.

Rhinoville was obliged to invest about $ 60 million in the factory by
January 2009 and was to be deprived of its share once it violated the
agreement. However, Rhinoville did not fulfill its obligations under
the contract but the Armenian government did not punish the company
and take back the shares,” he said.

Let us remind that because of this offshore company, today Nairit
has about $300 million debt.

Syrian Armenians: Armenia Must Demand That World Community Condemn T

SYRIAN ARMENIANS: ARMENIA MUST DEMAND THAT WORLD COMMUNITY CONDEMN TURKEY’S ACTIONS AGAINST KESAB ARMENIANS

Wednesday, March 26, 16:13

Armenia must demand that the world community condemn Turkey’s actions
against the Kesab Armenians, representatives of the Aleppo authorities
Nerses Sargsian told journalists on Wednesday.

He said that in his speech Armenia’s President spoke about actions
against ethnic minorities. “But the problem here is also that for
the Kesab Armenians Kesab is their historical land even though it is
situated in the territory of Syria and the Turkish authorities are
directly supporting the Islamist groups that are attacking the town.

So, we would like the Armenian authorities to express a clear attitude
towards the events,” Sargsian said.

Another representative of the Aleppo authorities Garo Yuzbashian
said that the Kesab Armenians are eager to go back to their homes but
they can’t do this now as they need security guarantees. As regards
the readiness of the Armenian and Nagorno-Karabakh authorities to
receive the Kesab Armenians, he said that if the latter are forced
to leave Syria, the first place they will come to will be Armenia
and only then depending on their occupation, they will chose where
exactly they will leave.

Armenians Fought For Independence Together With Greeks – Parliament

ARMENIANS FOUGHT FOR INDEPENDENCE TOGETHER WITH GREEKS – PARLIAMENT VICE CHAIR

March 26, 2014 | 17:32

YEREVAN. – March 25 is the Greek National Day. On that day in 1821,
the Greek nation achieved its independence.

The representatives of the Greek community in Armeniacelebrated the
Greece National Day with an afternoon event, in which Armenia National
Assembly (NA) Vice-Speaker Eduard Sharmazanov and Greek Ambassador
Ioannis Taghis also participated.

“Greeks were the first to fight for independence against the Ottoman
domination. The Armenians, together with Greeks, were fighting for
the independence of Greece.

“And this was symbolic because, in the late 19th century and the early
20th century, when the Hamidian massacres and the subsequent genocide
[of the Armenians] took place, the Greeks, together with the Armenians,
fought against the Ottoman domination,” the NA vice chair noted.

Sharmazanov also congratulated both the Armenians and the Greeks
because, in his words, the destinies of the two nations are similar.

For his part, Ambassador Taghis said that Greeks live in various
communities in Armenia, and stated that he is happy that they live
in a country which is linked to Greece with centuries-old friendship.

Difficult Days Ahead For Kessab Armenians

DIFFICULT DAYS AHEAD FOR KESSAB ARMENIANS

March 26, 2014 | 11:26

The Social Democrat Hunchakian Party (SDHP) joins Armenians around
the world that revolt and follow with a deep concern the fate of
Syria’s predominantly Armenian-populated town of Kessab and its
Armenian population.

“Kessab would not have become an arena of conflict without the
participation of the Turkish authorities, forcing our compatriots to
expatriate yet again.

“[But] the sole comfort is that they were able to get to safe places
without the loss of human lives. Nonetheless, difficult days await
our compatriots, and they long for moral and material assistance.

“To that end, we urge our compatriots to redouble their efforts so
that our compatriots [in Syria] are able to surmount these severe
ordeals,” the SDHP statement specifically reads.

In the early morning on March 21, armed militants from the Jabhat
al-Nusra Islamic terrorist group infiltrated into northern Syria’s
Latakia Governorate, which is predominantly inhabited by Armenians and
Alawites. Two large groups of terrorists had launched the attack from
Turkey. Numerous displaced Kessab Armenians are currently sheltered
in Latakia city. On March 23, Turkish fighter planes downed in Kessab
a Syrian military aircraft that was conducting a mission against the
Islamic terrorists.

L’OPPOSITION CONVAINCUE DE PRESENTER UNE MOTION DE DEFIANCE

Politique

“, a commente Markarian.

Siria: I Cristiani Fuggiti Da Kessab Affrontano L’emergenza Con Spir

SIRIA: I CRISTIANI FUGGITI DA KESSAB AFFRONTANO L’EMERGENZA CON SPIRITO DI COMUNIONE

Radio Vaticana
25 marzo 2014

occupata dalle milizie ribelli anti-Assad all’alba del 21 marzo.

dettagli precisi dell’assalto: “I cristiani sono fuggiti all’alba,
I ribelli arrivavano dalle
montagne al confine con la Turchia. Erano tanti e ben armati.

celebrato Messa insieme. Ho sentito il nostro parroco Nareg, e l’ho
incoraggiato a stare vicino a tutti i fedeli, in questo momento
difficile.

trovino in pericolo.

che avrebbero visto forze turche partecipare direttamente all’attacco
contro l’esercito siriano.

cristiane in Medio Oriente.
armeni.
