THE POPE RECEIVES ARAM I, CATHOLICOS OF THE ARMENIAN APOSTOLIC CHURCH
OF CILICIA: WE SHARE THE SAME HOPES

VATICAN CITY

The following information was released by the Vatican Information
Service (VIS):

On our journey towards full communion, we share the same hopes and
a similar sense of responsibility as we strive to be faithful to the
will of the Lord Jesus Christ. With these words, Pope Francis greeted
His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Armenian Apostolic Church of
Cilicia, during their meeting in the Vatican this morning.

As the Pope observed, His Holiness Aram I’s commitment to the cause
of Christian unity is well known to all. The Catholicos has played
an important role in the World Council of Churches and in the Middle
East Council of Churches, which support Christian communities in the
Middle East, and has made a significant contribution to the Joint
Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Catholic Church and
the Oriental Orthodox Churches.

Francis also remarked that Aram I represents a part of the Christian
world that is irrevocably marked by a history of trials and sufferings
courageously accepted for the love of God. The Armenian Apostolic
Church has had to become a pilgrim people; it has experienced in a
singular way what it means to journey towards the Kingdom of God. The
history of emigration, persecutions and the martyrdom experienced by
so many of the faithful has inflicted deep wounds on the hearts of all
Armenians. We must see and venerate these as wounds inflicted on the
very body of Christ, and for this very reason a cause for unfailing
hope and trust in the provident mercy of the Father.

Trust and hope. How much these are needed! They are needed by our
Christian brothers and sisters in the Middle East, especially those
living in areas racked by conflict and violence. But we too need them,
as Christians who are spared such sufferings yet so often risk losing
our way in the desert of indifference and forgetfulness of God, or
living in conflict with our brothers and sisters, or succumbing in
our interior struggle against sin. As followers of Jesus Christ, we
need to learn humbly to bear one another’s burdens and to help each
other to be better Christians, better followers of Jesus. So let us
advance together in charity, as Christ loved us and gave Himself for
us, offering Himself to God as a pleasing sacrifice.

In these days before Pentecost in faith, let us invoke the Spirit,
the Lord and Giver of Life, that he may renew the face of the earth,
be a source of healing for our wounded world, and reconcile the hearts
of all men and women with God the Creator. May He, the Paraclete,
inspire our journey towards unity. May He teach us to strengthen the
fraternal bonds which even now unite us in the one baptism and in
the one faith, concluded Francis.

After the meeting, the Catholicos and the Pope prayed together in
the Redemptoris Mater Chapel.

Turkish Officials Could Face Investigation Over Hrant Dink Murder

TURKISH OFFICIALS COULD FACE INVESTIGATION OVER HRANT DINK MURDER

Istanbul counrthouse. (Photo: AFP)

ISTANBUL (Hurriyet Daily)–Key officials in Turkey could face a probe
regarding the murder of Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink on
charges of intent or negligence after an Istanbul court overturned
a previous ruling.

An Istanbul court has lifted a previous decision, which has ruled that
there was no need for sanctions against the former deputy governor
of Istanbul, Ergun Gungör, Istanbul Police Chief Celalettin Cerrah,
former Istanbul Police Department Intelligence Head Ahmet İlhan Guler,
and six police officers regarding the 2007 assassination.

The court recommended an investigation into nine officials following a
European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) decision. A lawyer for the Dink
family, Hasan Bakırcıoglu, confirmed that it is now legally possible
for a probe against Gungör, Cerrah, Guler, and six police officers.

Dink, the highly esteemed former editor-in-chief of weekly Agos, was
murdered in broad daylight in front of his newspaper’s building on
Jan. 19, 2007, by a 17-year-old Turkish nationalist. The triggerman,
Ogun Samast, was convicted of premeditated murder and sentenced to
22 years and 10 months of prison after a two year-trial, but lawyers
representing the Dink family have repeatedly expressed their dismay
over the way the investigations and the trial were conducted.

His assassination sent shockwaves through Turkey and grew into a
wider scandal after it emerged that the security forces knew of a
plot to kill Dink, but failed to act.

Backing up widespread accusations of a state conspiracy, another key
figure in the trial, Erhan Tuncel, claimed in December 2013 that he had
informed the police of the plan, but that his warnings went unheeded.

There have been suggestions that the killing was a result of “deep
state” work, but the court said there was no organization behind the
murder. According to reports, Dink was called to a police department
and “warned” about the plot against him, fueling belief that the
murder was known by some institutions within the state beforehand

ARS Central Executive Board’s Statement On The Recent Anti-Armenian

ARS CENTRAL EXECUTIVE BOARD’S STATEMENT ON THE RECENT ANTI-ARMENIAN ATTACKS ON NOR KYOUGH

By Contributor on June 6, 2014

The Central Executive Board of the Armenian Relief Society (ARS)
condemns, in no uncertain terms, the ongoing, indiscriminate shelling
of Aleppo’s Armenian-populated Nor Kyough suburb since June 1.

Following the brutal deportation of the native Armenians of Kessab,
this latest undeniably anti-Armenian military operation has devastated
Nor Kyough.

Along with many casualties, buildings that house Armenian schools,
churches, organizational properties, countless homes and business
premises have been leveled with constant bombardment. As a result, many
Armenian families have been left homeless. Once again, the ARS/Syria’s
shelter and the socio-medical center, the only center providing health
care services to the residents, have also been damaged.

We appeal to all powers, the United Nations, non-factions, and
international political and non-governmental organizations, to take
all possible steps to put a stop to the killing of innocent civilians
and the physical destruction of their homes and communal structures.

The Armenian Relief Society, with the full support of Diasporan and
Homeland benevolent, political, and diplomatic organizations, will
do its utmost to relieve the pain and despair of the victims of this
latest assault on Armenian communities of the Middle East.

Upcoming Demonstration In Yerevan To Protest Against ‘Feudal’ Employ

UPCOMING DEMONSTRATION IN YEREVAN TO PROTEST AGAINST ‘FEUDAL’ EMPLOYERS

06.06.2014 19:30 epress.am

The pressure group against pension reform Dem Em’s next protest
march will begin at 7 pm on June 11 just outside the Matenadaran
(Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts), this time against
employers putting pressure on their employees not to opt out of the
funded pension system. This news was conveyed by Dem Em members at
a discussion at the Media Center today.

Despite amendments to the RA Law on Funded Pension that allow workers
to opt out of the pension system upon a written request to their
employers, many employers are not accepting their employees’ requests.

According to media reports, many workers are threatened with dismissal.

“We understand that people need to earn their daily bread. But dare to
talk about the problem, [even] with your face covered and your voice
disguised. Raise [the issue] because people who are not pressured,
who are a bit more independent will support you. So that next time
feudal employers will not perceive employees as vassals,” said Dem
Em member David Manukyan.

Another discussion participant, Srbuhi Ghazaryan, said they received
many letters, for example from employees of Yerevan State Linguistic
University named after V. Brusov, Yerevan State Medical University
named after Mkhitar Heratsi, Grand Tobacco company, and Tchaikovsky
School of Music, that the accounting department is not accepting
requests to opt out of the mandatory component of the funded pension
system.

“They say, the rector said if [an employee] submits a request [to
opt out of the pension system], tell him to also submit a letter of
resignation,” said Ghazaryan.

She mentioned at least 10 schools where written requests to opt out
are also not accepted.

Manukyan, in turn, said Dem Em has prepared a new legislative package,
which is completely different from the current interim law.

“The funded [pension] must be voluntary,” he concluded.

Another "Armenian Scandal" Boils Up In Azerbaijan; This Time Bullyin

ANOTHER “ARMENIAN SCANDAL” BOILS UP IN AZERBAIJAN; THIS TIME BULLYING VICTIM BECAME FOLK SINGER

16:46 06/06/2014 >> SOCIETY

People’s Artist of Azerbaijan Brilliant Dadashova has become an object
of severe criticism after the media spread information according to
which the singer was honored with Big Apple Music Awards. According to
the Azerbaijani news portal “Haqqin.az”, it turned out that the award
was organized by the Armenian company acting in the United States.

It is noted that in addition to the award, the singer was awarded
with 30 thousand dollars and also received a Mercedes car.

“No one in Azerbaijan would say a word if the gift to the singer was
made by an Azerbaijani sponsor. But the thing is that this time the
gift was received from the Armenian side,” revolt the author.

It is noted that the founder of the award is the American TV channel
“TV Eriduni.” “Yes, technically it is an American channel. But even
the title of it makes it clear that this is an Armenian project. One
just needs to rack one’s brain a little before running to get awards,”
writes “Haqqin.az.”

According to the publication, Dadashova stated that she did not know
the nationality of the organizers of the event, and that there are
“Armenians everywhere.” “So why wouldn’t you go there (to Armenia
– Eds.)? Go there, and then come back and state: “Look, Armenians
appreciate our music,” the author states.

According to him, the singer should apologize. “On the contrary,
they try to convince us that she did the right thing, that we should
be proud of her; her, the Madame, who receives a car and a big cash
prize from the American-Armenians! Dadashova, surely, does not know
that the American-Armenians do everything for passing anti-Turkish
and anti-Azerbaijani resolutions in the Senate and the U.S. Congress,”
he says.

The author expresses his surprise saying that “the singer, who has
happily flown to receive prizes and gifts from a company, which
publically endows Armenians and which is conducted by the Armenians,
still has the title of the People’s Artist of Azerbaijan.”

“It will be interesting to see the reaction of the MNS. The journalist
Rauf Mirkadirov is kept in captivity; serious charges are brought
against him. Human rights defenders and journalists that have been
in Armenia are called to the Prosecutor General’s office one by
one. So why not to get interested in Brilliant Dadashova’s person! She
doesn’t hide the fact that she receives money and expensive cars from
a structure, headed by the Armenians. So, maybe it makes sense to
“check” our singer in MNS?” the author stresses.

The site also quoted the representative of the Ministry of Culture of
Azerbaijan Zohra Aliyeva, who stated that Brilliant Dadashova has left
for the U.S. to receive an award not by the support of the ministry,
and no one knows there who and why had organized the trip.

“Thus, it turns out that any Azerbaijani singer, actor, cultural
activist can participate in Armenian projects that are naturally held,
not by the native Ministry of culture, can receive cash prizes and
expensive gifts from the Armenian organizations. As a result we have
a cycle of lies and absurd,” the author concludes.

Dickran Kouymjian: For Demanding Compensations From Turkey We Should

DICKRAN KOUYMJIAN: FOR DEMANDING COMPENSATIONS FROM TURKEY WE SHOULD COORDINATE OUR EFFORTS

17:25 06/06/2014 >> INTERVIEWS

Panorama.am presents an interview with Dr. Dickran Kouymjian, Haig &
Isabel Berberian Professor of Armenian Studies at Fresno University,
Emeritus. Dr. Kouymjian expresses his views on the question of
demanding reparations from Turkey, on the current policies of Armenia
and Turkey as well as on the question of the agendas of the Armenian
studies programs.

Dr. Kouymjian, in your articles on the Armenian Genocide you write
that the Armenian Republic and the Armenian Church should raise the
question of legal compensations from Turkey, with particular regard
to Armenian monuments and property. What is the best strategy that
Armenia should pursue to this end?

This is the question that I will be addressing at international
conference to be held in March 2015 in Paris to commemorate the
hundredth anniversary of the Genocide. The answer, as the answers
to all questions regarding the Armenian Genocide is complex and
susceptible to multi-response very different in kind. The best strategy
is one of coordination: Coordination between the Armenian Government
and the Diaspora where most of the descendants of the victims live,
but also coordination between the Armenian Church and its citizens when
it comes to matters of Church property, by which we mean buildings and
possessions related to religious element of Armenian life which are
the property of the Armenian people administered on consensus by the
Church. There has been such coordination, but it has been sporadic,
dispersed, and usually invisible. The work has to be separated into
individual domains–more thorough accumulation of inventories of
churches and other monuments that were affected; the constitution
of bodies of experts including jurists and historians that can help
articulate not only what the nation and survivors want, but they
should be asking for; expert in international affairs that can gage
the sometimes rapid changes in questions concerning indemnities for
genocide and crimes against humanity, because what might have been a
theoretical demand of a few decades ago, or instance recognition of the
genocide, may no longer be a vital requisite. These individual spheres
of thinking and activity, only a few of which I have cited above, would
then have to be coordinated in a dynamic manner susceptible to adapt
itself to a constantly shifting world and a regular re-examination of
nationals should demand of perpetrators. This kind of action requires
both a think-tank type of creativity as well as a concrete hands-on
accumulation of data. It is with this kind of solid survey of seize
and destroyed property and monuments and a positive strategy toward
attaining designated goals, even if changing, can be established.

What is your view regarding the policies of Armenia towards Turkey
on the eve of the Armenian genocide centennial (for instance the fact
that the President of Armenia has invited the President of Turkey to
Armenia to commemorate the Genocide in 2015)?

The Republic of Armenia has been trying to coordinate a general policy,
or course of action, with representatives of the diaspora and major
Armenian Church leaders. A committee was formed some years ago to this
effect; the task is difficult and whatever the outcome, there will be
successes and failures as well as praise (perhaps auto-satisfaction)
and criticism. It is difficult, at times impossible, to predict
the flow of events. The most optimistic thinkers of my generation
could have never imagined Armenian independence would be gained so
quickly after the slow demise of the Cold War, or could have in any
way predicted the fall of the Soviet Union. Even after 1991, none
of us predicted or could have predicted in those earlier years that
seemed to point to a new and revitalized Armenian nation, that in a
short time Armenia would be to a great extent guided by the wishes
of oligarchs, whose power seems to increase with time, as is the case
in other post-Soviet republics.

This situation has created a chasm between the world view of Armenians
leading the Republic and Armenians in the diaspora who see civil
responsibility differently and who have quite different views about
what a democratic state is or should be and about what the rights
and the obligations of citizens are, and that means all citizens
including elected governmental officials, leaders of the church
and other important institution, oligarchs, and not just the great
majority of the population, much of which still lives in sub-standard
conditions, often in poverty with no way of changing or escaping the
system except by leaving the country.

The invitation of President Sargsyan to the President of Turkey to
come to Armenia to commemorate the centenary of the Genocide puts
pressure on Turkish leadership, it seems to me at first glance,
because if Turkey accepts, it will constitute an automatic form
of acknowledgement and if it refuses the invitation it would be an
awkward response to what should appear to world public opinion as a
step as positive as Mr. Erdogan tries to make of his official sorrow
for the fate of Armenians in 1915.

What is your view of the policies pursued by Turkey towards Armenia
in the context of the Genocide centennial (for instance Turkish Prime
Minister offered “condolences” to the victims of 1915)? Do you think
there is a sort of change happening in Turkey or do you think it is
merely another propaganda ploy of the Turks on the eve of 2015?

The Turkish Prime Minister’s statement, whatever its calculated purpose
is, was an unexpected event. However such decisions are often judged
in hindsight; we say that the rather hasty positive response to the
American sponsored Turkish Armenian Reconciliation Commission (TARC)
signed in Geneva in 2004 led nowhere, but gave the appearance that
Turkey was behaving reasonably.

As for the question of change happening in Turkey, yes, I believe as
anyone who has followed events in Turkey in the past two or three
years, since the assassination of Hrant Dink, that a new awareness
of what happened in 1915 to the Armenians is occurring at times very
rapidly, especially among young intellectuals. At times it goes faster
than we would have imagined, at other times it appears to be thwarted
by a very clever authoritarian state which commands enormous human
and financial resources.

Turkey also represents a very important commercial market; its
economy is still growing despite a recent slowing down. It would
be foolish not to be realistic, perhaps cynical is a better word,
about the amoral attitude of multinational corporations that care
little about democratic rights of the citizens of their own counties,
let alone of those countries they do business with. Many of the
leaders of countries and the heads of their large corporations
have no reservations or moral inhibitions when it comes to making
money in countries that are dictatorships or engage in practices in
theory unacceptable in their own environments. It would be naïve to
imagine that the major powers, including western democracies, have
any interests that supersede self-interest.

It should, however, be abundantly clear that a change in Turkey
toward the Genocide and the Armenian question in general is taking
place and will continue almost entirely from within. It will be
led as the Turks themselves are in part already driving it. There
are already close ties between these enlightened Turkish elites and
responsible and dedicated Armenians in both Armenia and the Diaspora;
these contacts must be strengthened and broadened and this can only
be done by working with Turks individually and collectively.

Dr. Kouymjian, you were the Director of the Armenian Studies Program
at Fresno State for many years. What activities is the program pursuing
now that you have retired?

In 2008 I formally retired as the first incumbent of the Haig and
Isabel Berberian Endowed Professorship of Armenian Studies and the
Director of the Armenian Studies Program at the Center for Armenian
Studies and definitively returned to my home in Paris. Upon my
retirement, my position was separate into two positions. The
new Director of the Program is Prof. Barlow Der Mugrdechian, my
former student and long time colleague, and as the second holder
of the Berberian Chair Prof. Sergio La Porta was chosen after an
international search. Together they are continuing the various
activities of the Program including a heavy teaching schedule,
enhancing it and broadening the outreach of Armenian Studies in the
University and in the Fresno community.

Dr. Kouymjian, you have recently published a book titled “Artsakh:
Garden of Armenian Arts and Traditions – Karabagh” (2012). To what
extent are the contemporary issues that Armenia is facing (such as for
instance the question of Nagorno-Karabakh) on the agenda of Armenian
chairs in the world, including the program in Fresno?

I did edit along with Prof. Claude Mutafian of Paris, a bilingual,
English and French, volume on the arts of Artsakh-Karabagh that has had
little circulation outside of France, with virtually no distribution
in Armenia or the United States. I hope a second printing will reach
a larger audience, because the essays by Patrick Donabedian, Francois
Djindjian, George Bournoutian, Claude Mutafian, and myself are of
the highest academic quality, with the latest theories in each of
the domains covered and with beautiful illustrations, but in a very
accessible language suitable for the any interested reader.

I am no longer one who can comment on the teaching of contemporary
issues concerning Armenia except to say in general that though the
matter is not ignored in the general courses in modern Armenian
history, current topics are presented to students and the public
through the Armenian Studies Program Lecture Series at Fresno open
to the students and the public at large. Important experts, sometimes
scholars, other times individuals influential in international affairs
and in conditions in Armenia as well as Turkey and the diaspora,
are invited to come to Fresno to speak. Also at the university, due
to an important endowment, we initiated the Henry Kazan Visiting
Professorship in Modern Armenian and Genocide Studies, by which a
distinguish scholar is chosen from among candidates to be in residence
on campus for one semester for a specific course on some aspect of the
Genocide and to offer three public lectures to the community around a
central topic. In general, Armenian studies programs have a curriculum
centered around history, language and literature, and at times Armenian
art. Those programs that specialized in the modern and contemporary
history of Armenia, such as UCLA, Berkeley, Boston University or
University of Michigan, both at Ann Arbor and the Dearborn campus,
are more likely to offer an occasional course on contemporary issues.

Armenian studies as it developed in Europe in the nineteenth and
twentieth centuries was concentrated on ancient and medieval history,
philology and classical Armenian. This tradition is still very
important in both European universities and places like Harvard and
until recently Columbia. For modern studies in the U.S., but also in
Europe, the Genocide remains the focus and to a much lesser extent
contemporary geopolitical investigation.

Dr. Kouymjian, thank you very much for the interview.

Insignificant Increase In Electricity Price Expected At Vorotan Casc

INSIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN ELECTRICITY PRICE EXPECTED AT VOROTAN CASCADE

June 06, 2014 | 18:55

YEREVAN. – There will be insignificant increase in electricity price
at the Vorotan cascade in 2014, Public Services Regulatory Commission
chairman Garegin Baghramyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Back in 2010 the Armenian government received from the German KfW bank
a loan of 51 million euros to renovate Vorotan cascade. In 2010-13,
the tariff for sale of electricity from Vorotan was significantly
increased, from 0.96 drams in 2010 to 6.8 – in 2013.

Baghramyan claims there is no need in further increase, and the
changes will be insignificant.

The agreement on the sale of the Vorotan Hydro Cascade, a series
of three hydroelectric power plants, to Contour Global was signed
in January.

A $180-million deal is the largest U.S. private investment in Armenia’s
history and the first U.S. investment in Armenia’s critical energy
sector.

Armenian has built this magnificent mosque – Turkey’s Erdogan

June 07, 2014 | 14:16

Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated, during the reopening of a
historical mosque in Istanbul’s Ortakoy district, that an Armenian
architect had built this mosque.

Erdogan and several of his ministers were on hand at the official
reopening of the mosque, reported Bugun daily of Turkey.

“This magnificent mosque was built by an Armenian architect. This
mosque occupies a special place among other mosques, and we need to
pay tribute to the architect and the builders of this structure,”
Erdogan said recalling that he was speaking about the Armenian Balyan
family.

During the Ottoman years, the members of the Balyan family had
designed and built numerous buildings, bridges, palaces, churches, and
