The bishop was stabbed in the house and beheaded outside. He cried
help before he died. The murderer shouted “Allah Akbar!”. The alleged
insanity of the murderer is now to be excluded. There is no medical
certificate to prove it. Murat Altun accuses the dead bishop of being
a homosexual. Turkish minister of justice condemns the murder and
promises to shed light on the incident.

Iskenderun (AsiaNews) – Today at 4pm local time the funeral will
take place of Msgr. Padovese, killed by his driver, Murat Altun,
strangely “crazed” last June 3. Meanwhile, new details have emerged
on the dynamics and motives of the killing that has prostrated the
Turkish Church.

The funeral ceremony will be held in the Church of the Annunciation,
with the participation of the apostolic nuncio, Mgr. Antonio Lucibello,
the Latin bishops of Istanbul and Izmir, the Armenian Catholic Bishop
of Istanbul, as well as the priests in Turkey and representatives of
international embassies.

There will also be a delegate of the Conference of Bishops of Europe
present. The presence of bishops from other countries, particularly
Italy, are not expected: After the funeral, in Iskenderun, the body of
Mgr. Padovese will be brought to Milan, Italy, where he will receive
other funeral. The funeral in Italy is likely to take place on Monday,
June 14. The delay is due to the fact that the Italian courts have
asked to do an autopsy on the body of the martyred bishop.

As the days pass, new details emerge on the story of murder and the
alleged “insanity” of the assassin.

The doctors who performed the autopsy reveal that Mgr. Padovese had
knife wounds all over his body, but especially in the heart (at least
8). His head was almost completely detached from his neck, attached
to his body by only the skin of the back of the neck.

Even the dynamics of the killing is clearer: the Bishop was stabbed
in his house. He had the strength to go out the door of the house,
bleeding and crying for help and there he was killed. Perhaps only
when he fell to the ground, was his head cut off.

Witnesses said they heard the bishop cry out for help. But more
importantly, is that they heard screams of Murat immediately after
the murder. According to these sources, he climbed on the roof of
the house shouted: “I killed the great Satan! Allah Akbar! “.

This call coincides perfectly with the idea of beheading, making sense
that it is like a ritual sacrifice against evil. This correlates with
the murders of ultranationalist groups and Islamic fundamentalists
who apparently want to eliminate Christians from Turkey.

Moreover, according to a Turkish newspaper, Milliyet on June 4, the
murderer had told police that he his actions were the result of a ”
divine revelation.”

Faced with these new chilling details perhaps the statements by the
Turkish government and the first views expressed by the Vatican need to
be revised. They had claimed that the killing did not have political
or religious implications. Notwithstanding that, as Benedict XVI said
in the plane en route to Cyprus, this murder “can not be attributed
to Turkey or the Turks, and should not obscure dialogue”.

Adding to the pontiff’s justifiable concerns, are the increasing
demands of Catholics and some Turkish NGOs that police should not stop
the investigation at the presumed “insanity” of Murat, but proceed
and delve deeper into his possible links with organizations of the
“Deep State”, even beyond the Turkish government.

The alleged insanity of the 26 year old who for more than four years
lived next to the bishop is now indefensible. Ercan Eris, the church’s
lawyer, argues that the murderer can not become depressed in a day and
that there is no medical report which declares that. Now it is certain
that the young man is sane. There is no medical certificate attesting
to his mental disability. Recently he said he was depressed, but now
it is thought that this was all a strategy to defend himself later.

Yesterday in the Ministry of Justice came directly from Ankara to
Iskenderun and explicitly condemned the act and ensured that he will
do everything possible to shed light on what happened.

Establishing the truth is necessary for the Turkish State, because it
shows its modernity and ability to guarantee rights, but it is also
necessary for the Church. According to police sources, it seems that
Murat is offering a new justification for his action: Mgr. Padovese
was a homosexual, Murat, 26, was the victim, “forced to suffer abuse.”

The killing of the bishop was not martyrdom, but an act of “legitimate
defence”.

But according to experts of the Turkish world, the killing of Mgr.

Padovese shows an evolution of organizations of the “Deep State” being
the first time they aim so high. So far they had targeted ordinary
priests, but now they have attacked the head of the Turkish Church
(Mgr Padovese was president of the Episcopal Conference of Turkey). At
the same time, their actions are becoming more sophisticated, less
crude than before. There not only limit their defence to claims of
“insanity”, already used for the murder of Father Santoro, but
offer more explanation to confuse public opinion nationally and
internationally.

BAKU: USA Stresses Azerbaijan’s Importance

USA STRESSES AZERBAIJAN’S IMPORTANCE

Gates meets Abiyev A forthcoming visit by US Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton is a sign of Azerbaijan’s importance to Washington.

US Defence Secretary Robert Gates told his Azerbaijani counterpart
in Baku today that a letter from President Barack Obama to President
Ilham Aliyev, Hillary Clinton’s upcoming visit and his present visit to
Baku were all examples of the strategic partnership between Azerbaijan
and the United States.

The date for Hillary Clinton’s visit is not yet known. A spokesman
for the US embassy in Azerbaijan, Keith Bean, told APA news agency
today that he was unaware of it.

The US defence secretary is on a two-day visit to Baku to express US
gratitude for its contribution to coalition efforts in Afghanistan
and to shore up relations with Azerbaijan, which cancelled joint
military exercises with US forces in May.

Azerbaijani servicemen are part of the International Security
Assistance Force in Afghanistan and the country is a key element in
a global air and land network that replenishes the reserves of the
troops and Afghan forces, according to the Defence Department website.

An official welcome ceremony was held at the Azerbaijani Defence
Ministry today, Defence Ministry spokesman Lt-Col Eldar Sabiroglu
told journalists.

Defence Minister Col-Gen Safar Abiyev noted the brief history of
Azerbaijan-US military cooperation founded by then President Heydar
Aliyev in 1997 and said that Azerbaijan attached great importance to
cooperation with the US.

Speaking about the joint contribution to the fight against
international terrorism and other security matters, the minister said
the situation was complex and tense in the South Caucasus because of
the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. He appreciated
the role of the US as a co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group mediators.

Safar Abiyev hoped that Azerbaijan and the United States would
establish real partnership relations and that the defence secretary’s
visit to Azerbaijan would make a new contribution to the development
of this partnership.

Safar Abiyev referred to a restrictive clause, Section 907, in the
US Freedom Support Act, which, he said, had a negative impact on
US-Azerbaijani relations.

Section 907 prohibits direct US aid to the Azerbaijani government and
prevents the development of strategic relations between the countries.

The Section has been waived by the US president since October 2001
but remains on the statute book.

Robert Gates told his Azerbaijani counterpart that when he returned
home he would tell President Obama of the importance of a solution to
the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict for Azerbaijan. The US defence secretary
said would do his best to achieve the abolition of Section 907.

Since 2001, tens of thousands of military flights to Afghanistan have
passed via Azerbaijan. Some 100,000 soldiers flew through Azerbaijan
airspace en route to Afghanistan last year, according to the Defence
Department website.

Today the General RA infectiologist Ara Asoyan touched upon the problem
of swimming in swimming pools during the summer season in Yerevan
and Armenian regions and mentioned that in regions and villages there
are some places to swim and there is a risk of getting infected.

“We have 2 places for swimming, the first one is the one that is
controlled by the state, these are the pools, however the cases of
infection are from the pools which are not controlled,” Ara Asoyan
mentioned and added that the controlled pools are personalized and
the amount of the chlorine in the water is under the control.

“We haven’t had any case of infection diseases neither from the pool
of the Republic Square nor from the “Poplavok,” it is not allowed to
swim there,” the general infectiologist mentioned.

Turkey: Genocidal Reflections From Armenian/Kurdish Mirrors

TURKEY: GENOCIDAL REFLECTIONS FROM ARMENIAN/KURDISH MIRRORS

Basil & Spice

June 7 2010

Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been vocal and extreme
in his rants against Israel’s enforcement of its embargo/blockade
of the Hamas-run Gaza Strip. Granted, nine Turks were killed –
needlessly in my opinion – in an altercation on a Turkish flagged
vessel participating in the so-called “freedom flotilla” last week. In
one of his statements, Erdogan accused the Israelis of “state terror.”

Interesting comments from the leader of a country that has a dubious
record on human rights at best and an atrocious legacy of genocide
against the Armenians and Kurds at worst.

Let’s talk about the Turks and the Kurds. The Kurds are the largest
ethnic group in the world who do not have their own country. It’s not
that they don’t want one, it’s just that no one will allow them to
have one – they sit on some pretty valuable real estate. The closest
they have come is the Kurdish autonomous region in northern Iraq
comprising three governorates along the Turkish and Iranian borders.

The only reason the Iraqis wrote the autonomous regions provision
into their post-Saddam constitution was American insistence, a means
to repay the Kurds for their assistance and loyalty to Washington
over the years. It was common knowledge that the Kurds would be the
first to take advantage of this provision. By way of disclosure, I
served with the CIA in northern Iraq in 1995 and 1996 working with the
Kurds against the Saddam government. It was one of the most rewarding
assignments of my career. I fully support Kurdish autonomy.

The area inhabited by the Kurdish people extends far beyond the
borders of Iraq into what is now Turkey, Iran and parts of Syria
and Armenia (see map above). None of these countries are remotely
inclined to provide an independent homeland for the Kurds. In fact,
in Turkey and Iran, they are not officially referred to as Kurds,
but as either Turkish or Persian “highlanders.”

Of the estimated (no one knows for sure and it is doubtful that any
of the host countries are going to conduct a true count) 20 million
Kurds that live in this region, well over half live in Turkey. Kurds in
Turkey claim that their numbers are much greater, comprising between
10 and as much as over 20 percent of the total population of the
country. Again, reliable numbers are not available.

Since as early as 1920 (shortly after the Armenian genocide of
1915-1917), the Turks have attempted to assimilate the Kurds into
Turkish culture and society – the recent programs have been called
“Turkification” of the Kurds. This effort is reminiscent of the
“Arabization” (ta’rib) program attempted by Saddam Husayn in Iraq in
the 1980’s and 1990’s. Hundreds of thousands of Kurds have died in
the two countries as a result of these programs.

Now we are treated to a lecture by the likes of the Turkish prime
minister, with questionable rhetoric like, “Gaza is a historical
cause for us,” (why?) and “we object to those who force the people
of Gaza to live in an open-air prison…we will stand firm until the
blockade on Gaza is lifted, the massacres cease and the state terror
in the Middle East is accounted for.”

Perhaps we should revisit the Turkish activities against the Armenians
and Kurds over the last almost 100 years. Then we can talk about
open-air prisons, massacres and state terror – and especially
about accountability for past actions. The Turks still refuse to
accept responsibility for the Armenian genocide. While we’re at it,
we could also advise the Turks that if they are serious about some
sort of alliance with Iran and Syria, we might support the idea of
an independent Kurdish homeland.

Mr. Erdogan, before you start accusing Israel of heinous activities,
you might want to refresh your recollections of Turkish history. The
reflections in that mirror are pretty ugly.

Lt Col Rick Francona (U.S. Air Force–Retired) enlisted in the
Air Force in 1970, and served as a Vietnamese linguist until 1973,
conducting aerial reconnaissance missions over Vietnam and Laos.

After Arabic language training, he served at a variety of locations
in the Middle East from 1975 to 1977, and supported the evacuation
of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon in 1976. In 1978, he became
an Arabic language instructor at the Defense Language Institute in
Monterey, California.

Today Francona is a retired Air Force intelligence officer and Middle
East specialist. In addition to his role as the lead U.S. military
interpreter during the Gulf War and a principal author of the report
to Congress on the conflict, he served throughout the Middle East with
the Defense Department and national intelligence agencies. Francona
is also the author of Ally to Adversary: An Eyewitness Account of
Iraq’s Fall from Grace. From 2003 to 2008, he was a media analyst
on Middle East political-military events for NBC News, and appeared
regularly on NBC Nightly News, The Today Show, MSNBC, CNBC, Hardball,
Countdown, and others.

His decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal,
the Bronze Star, and nine Air Medals, as well as campaign awards for
service in Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, and the Balkans. The colonel
was awarded the Central Intelligence Agency Seal Medallion for his
service with that agency. In 2006, Lt Col Francona was inducted into
the Defense Language Institute Hall of Fame. You’ll find Lt. Col

Pawn For The Wrong President

PAWN FOR THE WRONG PRESIDENT
Donald Wilson Bush

6 June 2010

“Lee Hamilton violates his institution’s charter by aiding the White
House in appeasing Turkish leaders”

On the surface, the Woodrow Wilson International Center (WWC) for
Scholar’s intent to honor Turkish Foreign Minister, Ahmet Davutoglu,
on June 17 th with this year’s WWC Public Service Award seems innocent
enough. But, in my opinion, it is not- and those closest to the
situation would certainly agree.

Not least among those in the know are the president and executive
director of the American Hellenic Institute who penned an open letter
to WWC executive director Lee H. Hamilton on May 21, 2010 questioning
the wisdom (but not the motive) of the WWC’s choice for receiving
this year’s award. I am today, however, questioning the motive as well.

As a direct descendant of Woodrow Wilson’s great-grandfather, and a
bearer of the family name (and the President’s proud heritage), I have
been careful over 47 years to quietly honor the sacred space between
family privilege and personal politics by purposefully recusing myself
of every good and self-serving opportunity that might dishonor or
misrepresent President Wilson’s cherished legacy. I have also watched
closely that the numerous institutions bearing his name do the same.

>>From the family’s perspective this is important because institutions
can, and often do (as a result of bureaucratic inertia and personal
compromise) lose connection with the purpose and ideals that once
animated the individual for whom an institution is named.

In the case of knowing what the WWC should stand for, one can find
clues to what animated Woodrow Wilson the man by considering the
catalogue of authorized biographies and Dr. Arthur Link’s impressive
pile of presidential papers carefully preserved by the Library of
Congress and published by Princeton University Press.

One can also integrate with this official archive of public
memorabilia, family stories, letters, journal entries, newsprint
pieces, photographs, personal affects and third party correspondence
to find the spark of personal inspiration that animated the president’s
dreams. This I have done with Wilson’s legacy for nearly three decades
and I will continue to do it for the rest of my life.

>>From a personal perspective such as this, I can easily attest to the
fact that Woodrow Wilson was every bit a poet as he was a politician.

Consequently he was as much motivated by his own Scots-Irish wellspring
of authenticity and substance as he was by his natural instinct for
calculation and ambition. This is important to note because it has
direct bearing on how one should interpret Wilson’s attitude toward
the Eurasian minor states that had been suppressed, unjustly attacked
and systematically slaughtered by the Ottoman Turks.

In short, Woodrow Wilson was motivated at his core by a strong sense
of poetic justice and hero projection-in his case born of a strong
predisposition for Christian duty and compassion-that inspired young
men of his day to advocate for the little guy and the underdog.

Although he didn’t do this perfectly (his blind eye to the plight
of African Americans is well noted), he did advocate, and advocated
STRONGLY, for the successful emancipation of Eurasian minor states
in the aftermath of WWI. This he did from his core, from his soul,
from his heart. And this unique combination of a scholar’s poetic
passion for justice and Truth-wedded with a political statesman’s
genius for taking decisive, informed action in the time of national
crisis-is that for which Woodrow Wilson the man is best remembered.

Without question, this fair reflection of Woodrow Wilson’s highest
ideals in favor of the underdog, as described above, is also part of
that Wilsonian legacy for which the WWC was specifically chartered
to preserve through their selection of programs, projects, scholars
(and award recipients).

However, with the questionable choice of Ahmet Davutoglu to receive
the WWC’s highest award this year, I must now blow the whistle and
redraw a blurred line that protects President Wilson’s historic legacy
from the unscrupulous ambitions of those presently representing WWC’s
bureaucratic leadership.

May I remind us all of the WWC’s charter as reflected in the words
of the WWC mission statement? I quote-the mission of the WWC is “to
commemorate the ideals and concerns of Woodrow Wilson by: providing a
link between the world of ideas and the world of policy; and fostering
research, study, discussion, and collaboration among a full spectrum
of individuals concerned with policy and scholarship in national and
world affairs.”

With all the recent blow back from their choice to honor Turkish
Foreign Minister, Ahmet Davutoglu-a figure despised by many Eurasian
people groups and thousands of activists worldwide punished as a
result of his government’s unjust domestic and foreign policies-the
present WWC leadership should at least consult President Wilson’s
collected papers to see the error in their judgment. For if they do,
they will find clear evidence of what was in the mind of our 28th
president regarding his desire for the people of Eurasia and how,
if he were alive today, he might interpret the idea of promoting
“collaboration among a full spectrum of individuals concerned”
relative to today’s US-Turkish foreign policy.

As contained in The Arbitral Award On Turkish-Armenian Boundary,
dated November 22, 1920, we have a record of Wilson’s own words: “I
have approached this difficult task with eagerness to serve the best
interests of the Armenian people as well as the remaining inhabitants,
of whatever race or religious belief they may be, in this stricken
country, attempting to exercise also the strictest possible justice
toward the populations, whether Turkish, Kurdish, Greek or Armenian,
living in the adjacent areas.”

With this clear record of President Wilson’s intent, what could
possibly cause Lee Hamilton and his staff to cow-tow to White House
pressure in this instance of Turkish diplomatic appeasement even at
the cost of dishonoring Woodrow Wilson’s personal wishes and thereby
violating the WCC’s very own mission and purpose?

Is it simply a matter of Mr. Hamilton playing his part in a
“good-old-boy” insider deal between President Obama’s State Department
and the WWC? (That seems plausible given the fact that as the former
chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Hamilton promoted
the careers of many staffers now writing Barack Obama’s foreign
policy- namely: Obama foreign policy advisor and deputy national
security advisor Denis McDonough, Director for the Middle East Dan
Shapiro, Obama campaign foreign policy speechwriter turned Deputy
National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications Ben Rhodes,
among others.) [For more details on that see story by foreign policy
reporter Laura Rozen posted May 3, 2010 on Politico.com]

Or could it possibly be a matter of Mr. Hamilton’s unwavering American
patriotism and an honest desire to ensure long-term US access to
Turkish military airbases? In the past Turkish leaders have made
veiled threats to alter the US-Turkey relationship should the US
Congress officially recognize the historic truth of Turkey’s role in
the Armenian Genocide. Hmmm.

Or perhaps it’s simply Mr. Hamilton’s heartfelt commitment to free
market economics. With billions of dollars in potential profits
from natural gas pipelines at stake for Wall Street-not to mention
his friend Dick Gephardt’s multi-national Turkish lobby partners
at the DC/Atlanta-based Gephardt Group-how much money will be lost
should the US State Department fail to secure Turkey’s compliance in
the trillion dollar energy deal? (Google: “Nabucco” “South Stream”
“pipeline” “Russia” to get the full picture.)

In the final analysis, it is most certainly a complex combination of
all these factors that have influenced Mr. Hamilton’s decision to do
the President’s bidding in this diplomatic business with Turkey.

Sadly, even on a good day in Washington, DC, such blatant accounts
of bureaucratic self-service like Mr. Hamilton’s come at a price
to the institutions they serve and the historical legacies they are
chartered to protect.

In this case-even if it is simply a matter of helping out his good
buddy, the President of the United States-Lee H. Hamilton has brought
shame to halls of one of our nation’s most cherished and tax-payer
supported institutions by violating its charter in favor of personal
and self-serving ambitions.

Perhaps Mr. Hamilton should consider leaving his post at the WWC first,
then figure out the best way to help his friend.

Lost-And-Found Armenians Need Our Help

LOST-AND-FOUND ARMENIANS NEED OUR HELP
Keghart.com team editorial

7 June 2010

In the early to late ’70s some Diaspora Armenian students studying
in Yerevan, having established a patriotic and private group called
Khempag, engaged in the study of various aspects of life in Armenia
and Armenians in Diaspora. They were particularly dissatisfied with
the accepted interpretations of historical events and policies that
had contributed to shaping Soviet and Diaspora Armenian societies.

Their efforts culminated in the establishment, for Diaspora students,
of a historical society named after Movses Khorenatsi. Members
of the group included Marxists, Ramgavars, Hunchaks, ARF and ASALA
sympathizers, and Chezoks. At its peak the group boasted a membership
representing close to 10% of the Diasporan student body.

The task of the group was not limited to research but included an
action plan that primarily was gauged to disseminate the notion of
demands versus recognition with respect to the Genocide of Armenians.

Furthermore, through a variety of student activities it strived
to cultivate an atmosphere of political and intellectual tolerance
and provide a contextual experience of co-operation that could be
transported to Spyurk.

There were anecdotal reports at the time that many orphans of the
Genocide and their descendants had converted to Islam to avoid Turkish
or Kurdish persecution. These forced converts would occasionally
confide their roots to strangers, it was rumoured. A sizeable portion
of these individuals apparently lived in Kurdish areas and some had
joined the recently formed militant Kurdistan Workers’ Party. Others
had left Turkey for Europe, taking advantage of the demand for cheap
labour in Germany and in other European countries.

The members of Khempag were interested to know more about these
crypto-Armenians, and possibly establish some contacts. One of the
members was entrusted to travel to Turkey, particularly to the Kurdish
areas and file a report. Listening to detailed descriptions that were
brought back it became evident that earlier reports were not fiction.

In village after village many old and young people had come forward
to tell their stories, that they or their parents were of Armenian
origin, that they had “adopted” Islam, had changed their way of life,
their language, and married Turks or Kurds to survive.

Over the past forty years some Hamshen Armenians and crypto-Armenians
from Kurdish areas and elsewhere in Turkey have migrated to Europe,
establishing communities, particularly in Germany. For a variety of
complex reasons, which are beyond the scope of this editorial, they,
by and large, have remained isolated from mainstream Armenian life.

One wonders whether an important contributory element to this
isolation has been the unwelcoming attitude of mainstream Armenians
themselves. Is it without cause that Alice Aliye Alt, a resident of
Germany, who has converted to Christianity and has tried to raise
her children as Armenians, and whose artist son has presented an art
exposition about the Genocide, recently made unflattering remarks
about the absence of a welcoming embrace by Armenian communities?

She stated, “Many of my dearest friends, members of the enlightened
Turkish intelligentsia, helped in our struggle to discover and
establish our identity, and in the recognition of the known and
unknown chapters of the Genocide of Armenians. Also our German and
Greek humanist friends in Germany and elsewhere were always at our
side. I cannot tell the same about most of the huge Armenian community
here, who until recently were suspicious of us.”

Having witnessed the uncaring attitude of native Armenians of
Armenia towards their compatriots after the repatriation in the ’40s,
the disrespect of Indian-Armenians towards their own relatives who
had migrated from Persia to India later in history, the critical
approach of established Armenian communities towards newcomers in
a variety of countries, it is not unreasonable to think that what
Mrs. Alt says corresponds to reality. Armenians like to speak of
unity; they write articles; compose songs, and shout at the top of
their lungs about unity. Yet, when the opportunity is presented to
help re-integrate lost Armenians who yearn to rejoin the Armenian
‘family’, we fail miserably. That’s what the past forty years tell
us about the odyssey of the Hamshenites and other crypto-Armenians
who have settled in Europe.

Will Armenian organizations, cultural and otherwise, come to their
senses and help our brethren who are caught in the vise of an identity
crisis? Armenians look at secret Armenians as Turks while Turks treat
them as gavoor Armenians. Their dignity should be respected with
utmost care. Their desire to become Armenian again should be welcomed.

They are in need of a variety of services, foremost all specialties
that deal with rehabilitation. They should not be looked at as
“potentials” who can “populate” and inflate the number of membership
of this or that organization. The approach should not be utilitarian
but humanitarian.

As observed by a Keghart.com reader, “Armenians, particularly in
Europe, should provide all kinds of assistance to encourage these
“lost” Armenians regain their identity. Armenians in Europe should
hold informational meetings for these Islamized Armenians, provide
them with books, brochures, speakers. If these Armenians are left to
their own devices, their children will become Europeanized and we would
lose them forever. They are specially precious to the Armenian nation
because of the lost-and-found aspect and because of their command of
European languages, skills and citizenship they can be of great help
to the Armenian nation.”
