Rare Manookian Paintings Removed From The Hotel Hana-Maui

RARE MANOOKIAN PAINTINGS REMOVED FROM THE HOTEL HANA-MAUI

Huffington Post

July 14 2010

It has been reported that a group of seven rare oil paintings by Arman
Tateos Manookian (1904-1931) was removed from the historic Hotel
Hana-Maui earlier this year. The paintings, which depict images of
early Hawaiians and the arrival of Captain Cook, were first purchased
from the artist in 1929 by Helene Fagan, the wife of Hana Ranch
Founder Paul Fagan Sr.

Several of the Hana paintings were originally on display at the
“Green Mill Grill” on Honolulu’s Bethel Street, where Mrs. Fagan saw
them one night in 1928 after viewing a performance at the Hawai’i
Theatre across the street. Mrs. Fagan’s cousin, Alice Bowen Spalding,
the manager of Gump’s Gallery on Kalakaua Avenue on Waikiki, gave
the artist his first and only one man show in 1929.

Considered daringly modern when they were first shown, the bold
canvasses were originally displayed in the Fagan’s Pu’u O Hoku Ranch
on Moloka’i along with Polynesian style furnishings. They have been on
display in Hana since 1947 when Paul Fagan opened the original 6 room
Ka’uiki Inn to attract tourists to the remote coast. For many years,
three of the largest paintings were displayed in the dining area,
high on its woven lauhala walls, where generations of honeymooners
dined beneath them. When the Fagan family sold the later Hotel and
surrounding lands in 1968, the paintings were included in the sale.

This isn’t the first time that rare items have been removed from the
Hana-Maui since the original sale. After purchasing the Hotel in 1984
the Rosewood Hotels Group removed the historic 225 piece Paul I Fagan
Sr. rifle collection from the hotel’s Paniolo Bar. The collection is
now reportedly displayed in the Dallas offices of billionaire Nelson
Bunker Hunt.

For a number of years the Manookian paintings were neglected by the
Hotel’s owners, who did not understand their importance. In the 1980’s
one canvas hung in the employee dining room over a steam table, flecked
with dried rice and gravy. When the Hana-Maui was purchased by San
Francisco based Passport Resorts in 2001, the Manookian paintings —
newly cleaned and restored — were used by architect/designer Hunton
Conrad in 2002 as the inspiration for the colors and design motifs
of the renewed interior.

The Hana Maui, facing declining revenues in a recessionary economy,
has changed hands twice in recent years. In 2008 Passport Resorts
LLC sold it to the Ohana Hotel Company, a subsidiary of Vermont based
Arden Grove Hospitality . In May of this year, it was again sold to
Denver based Amstar Group LLC. A source in Hana states that prior to
the most recent sale, the Manookian canvases were ordered removed by
Mr. Roy Goble, Managing Partner of Ohana.

A group of trustees from the Honolulu Academy of art, which had been
notified that the paintings would be sold, made an offer for several
works, but was outbid by an unidentified buyer. An appraiser present
when the works were being removed states that three were sold on
the spot.

Mr. Goble, the President of Goble Properties, based in Pleasanton,
California, did not respond to a phone request for information about
the removal and sale of the paintings. In January of last year a Wells
Fargo banker circulated images of at least two of the Hana Manookians
to mainland dealers requesting information about their retail value.

In Europe, where the removal of fine paintings and antiques is sadly
common, Mr. Goble would certainly be said to have indulged in cultural
asset stripping.

The removal of the seven Manookian paintings, among the finest of the
less than thirty known paintings by the fiery Armenian born artist,
represents a significant cultural loss of Hawai’i, where his paintings
are considered iconic. Manookian, who took his own life in 1931, was
a survivor of the Armenian Genocide who came to Hawai’i as a member
of the Marine Corps. Manookian once told a friend that his goal as
an artist was to create a “symphony of color.”

In 2005, a large Manookian painting from a Honolulu collection was sold
in a private transaction for a reported $500k, igniting new interest
in the artist’s work by dealers and collectors. Although the current
recession has softened the art market, each of the Hana Manookians
could still certainly command prices in the six figure range.

In April of 2009 the Hawai’i House of Representatives passed a
resolution, which mentioned Manookian as a “gifted painter” and a
“genocide survivor,” making April 24th Hawaii’s official “Day of
Remembrance in Recognition of and Commemoration of the Armenian
Genocide of 1915.”

The Hana canvasses were the last examples of Manookian’s work on
permanent public display anywhere in the world. The Honolulu Academy
of Art owns one Manookian, but it is not currently being shown. One of
the Academy’s trustees does intend to loan a Manookian to be displayed
in the near future. A group of murals that the artist painted for the
Waipahu theater just before his death were covered over and destroyed
when the Waipahu became an adult theater in the 1960s.

ANKARA: Humanitarian Assistance Exercise With Armenia

HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE EXERCISE WITH ARMENIA

Hurriyet Daily News
July 14 2010
Turkey

Turkey will reportedly join in for the first-ever humanitarian aid
drill to be held by NATO in Armenia. Turkish officials will be in the
region of Lori Mar, Armenia at the headquarters from Sept. 11 to 17.

Besides, if needed and requested, the Turkish border will be opened
to vehicles during the drill. Diplomatic sources said this would not
be an official opening of the border and that permission would be
given for humanitarian reasons only.

The military exercise has been planned by the Euro-Atlantic Disasters
Response Coordination Center, or EADRCC, under the NATO umbrella, where
all decisions are based on the unanimity of votes. EADRCC organizes
humanitarian assistance practices in member countries of the European
Atlantic Partnership Council, or EAPC, aiming at cooperation between
neighboring non-member countries.

The Council has prepared a scenario of a devastating earthquake
in Armenia for the drill, titled “Armenia-2010.” According to the
scenario, the infrastructure of the country will have been ruined
completely in the aftermath of a large earthquake, based on the one
that took place on Dec. 7, 1988, and 20,000 people will have died.

Hazardous industrial waste will have spilled, in the scenario. The
drill includes rescue, evacuation and the fight with hazardous waste.

The goal is to see how NATO and council members coordinate with each
other. (The Metsamour nuclear plant is located in a region close to
the Turkey-Armenia border. It is one of a few that come to mind when
one mentions hazardous spills.)

So far, 19 countries, including Turkey, are to participate in the
practice. A three-member diplomatic and disaster response team from
each country will join the drill. Although Azerbaijan is a council
member, like Armenia, they are not participating. Georgia, on the
other hand, is pitching in.

According to the initial scheme, supply and evacuation operation in
the Lori region in the north is envisaged via Georgia.

Preparations easing the atmosphere

However, Georgian ports cannot meet assistance delivery needs from
the sea. So, Turkey comes into the picture, as several parts of the
drill have been suggested to take place in the country. The Turkish
Foreign Ministry, keeping a possibility in mind, continues to work
to maintain conditions of transition points, highways in the region,
in order not cause any unnecessary political flaws.

As part of the efforts, as the Office of the Governor in Kars was
asked about the condition of highways, public excitement was created,
and it was perceived as a “border opening,” because U.S. Secretary of
State Hillary Clinton was paying a visit to Baku and Yerevan in those
days, too. Although the Turkish-Armenian border is not open yet due
to serious political problems, Turkey will allow preparations for
such a humanitarian assistance drill when requested.

Preparations are considered to mellow political tension, although
normalization of bilateral relations, including a border opening, is
in deadlock because of the Upper Karabakh talks. Diplomatic sources
are of the opinion that NATO’s earthquake exercise will not have any
impact on the Karabakh talks. However, diplomats also stress that
participation of Turkey and Armenia in the drill might help ease
relations between the two countries.

Clinton visited the Azeri capital of Baku in early July to meet
President İlham Aliyev and then passed to the Armenian capital of
Yerevan to meet President Serj Sargsian. She especially requested
progress from leaders in the Karabakh talks. The Minsk Group, under the
co-chairmen of the United States, Russia and France, is in charge of
the Karabakh talks. However, communication is in a dead lock over how
to end Armenian occupation in seven Azeri regions and in Karabakh and
how to manage withdrawal from seven priority counties in particular.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan repeatedly said the
deadlock in the Karabakh talks is an obstacle preventing normalization
of Turkish-Armenian relations, which are outlined the protocols signed
between the two countries in the summer of 2009.

ARTSAKH PEOPLE DECIDED STILL LONG AGO THERE IS NO ALTERNATIVE TO ARTSAKH INDEPENDENCE: SHARMAZANOV

“Let me tell the Azerbaijani unaccomplished sultan that “the right
to self-determination” means that the given people should determine
their fate,” Armenian Republican Party spokesman Eduard Sharmazanov
told Panorama.am commenting on Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s
statement.

“People’s right to self-determination rules out that one nation decides
for another. If someone has been making decisions for Aliyev and his
country so far, it doesn’t mean that he and his people can decide
for Artsakh. It’s only Artsakh people who can do it. And they decided
still long ago that there is no alternative to Artsakh independence,”
Sharmazanov said.

Aliyev said in his speech at the government’s sitting that:
“Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity should be restored, Armenian
armed forces should withdraw from the occupied territories,
all the forcefully displaced Azerbaijanis should return to their
homes, including Nagorno-Karabakh. Without Azerbaijan’s consent,
Nagorno-Karabakh cannot be granted any status and the issue makes
inseparable part of the negotiations.”

M. MINASYAN: TURKEY’S IMITATION FAILS

“We launched the Armenia-Turkey normalization process without
preconditions and we have carried out all our commitments, however,
we saw Turkey put forward preconditions, we were against them,
therefore our President suspended the Protocols,” NA RPA Faction
member Mkrtich Minasyan told a press conference when speaking about
Armenia-Turkey normalization.

According to Minasyan, currently Turkey imitates normalization to
prove to the world that it also continues carrying out its commitments
without preconditions, however, Turkey’s imitation fails.

RPA representative is convinced that Turkey will admit historical truth
soon in order to save its reputation. “Formerly, even pronouncing the
word “genocide” was banned in Turkey, while currently, that issue is
even discussed, and it is good as it is. Turkey will admit the truth
with the lapse of time, since there are still people of sound mind
in Turkey.”

Nevertheless, Mr. Minasyan supposes that if Turkey keeps acting the
same way, “we will have to withdraw our signature.”

ANKARA: Turkey Constructs Special Boats For Armenian Religious Mass

TURKEY CONSTRUCTS SPECIAL BOATS FOR ARMENIAN RELIGIOUS MASS IN AKDAMAR

July 14 2010
Turkey

Turkey constructs special boats for a religious mass to take place in
an Armenian church on Akdamar Island in Van, local ship constructer
said

Turkey constructs special boats for a religious mass to take place in
an Armenian church on Akdamar Island in the eastern province of Van,
a local ship constructer said on Wednesday.

Boat owners in Van are not only working to increase the security and
comfort of passengers they will carry to the island for the religious
mass on September 19, but also constructing new boats in European Union
(EU) standards.

“I have almost constructed two boats, and I have been asked to
construct another,” local ship constructer Suat Belek said.

Belek said there would be a lavatory, kitchen and a lounge on the
boats.

It takes more than two months to construct a boat, which costs around
65,000 Turkish liras-TL (42,000 USD).

Also, the head of Akdamar Island Motorized Vehicle Cooperative said
they would allocate almost 40 boats for the religious ceremony.

Moreover, Van’s Governor Munir Karaloglu told reporters about
preparations for the religious mass, and said local executives would
inform the Armenian community, who had laid down some demands, about
which demands they would meet.

Karaloglu said the the patriarch of Armenian in Turkey would conduct
the religious mass.

The governor said local executives would do everything in their power
to host people who came for the religious mass in the best way.

The 1,100-year-old Akdamar Church was opened in 2007 at a ceremony
that hosted officials from Armenia and Turkey after it was restored
by the Turkish government. The restoration costed some 1.7 million USD.

The Akdamar Church was constructed by architect bishop Manuel between
915 and 921 A.D. under the supervision of King Gagik I. Among the
important pieces of Armenian architecture, the church draws attraction
with its stone workmanship and the relieves on its walls.

Earlier this March, Turkish government gave permission for a single-day
religious that would take place once every year at the church upon a
proposal by the Van Governor’s Office and approval by Turkish Minister
of Culture and Tourism Ertugrul Gunay.

The rite at the Akdamar Church will take place each year in the second
week of September.
