RAFFI BARSOUMIAN: EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE ARMENIAN STAR OF

JULY 9, 11:02

Season 5 of the famous American TV show
was over in the end of May. Starting from the 17th episode of this
season, the main characters of the show–Elena (Nina Dobrev), Stefan
(Paul Wasley), and Damon (Ian Somerhalder)–have to struggle against
a new monster, the wicked Traveler Markos, who was embodied by
Armenian actor Raffi Barsoumian. This fact certainly interested us,
and therefore we tried to reach Raffi for a request of an interview,
which he accepted with greatest pleasure. We spoke about his Armenian
origins, moving to US, his appearance in TVD, and a lot more.

– Raffi, please speak about yourself. Why did you decide to move
to America?

– My parents were born and raised in the large Armenian community
inBeirut. I was also born there. My father’s side of the family had,
over the years, been emigrating to the states because of the continued
conflicts inBeirut. As the civil war got worse, my parents decided it
was time for them to leave, too and chose to join the family members
who had settled in Los Angeles. I was 1, when they left, so I grew up
in California. My parents have always been vigilant about making sure
we grew up conscious of our ethnic and cultural roots. Armenian was the
language in the house always. I’ve also grown up around lots and lots
of other Armenians – so, I’m a fluent speaker of the western dialect.

-Have you ever been to Armenia?

– I’ve only once had the chance to visit Armenia. As a family we made
a trip in 2005. We visited friends in Yerevan and toured as much of the
country as possible, mostly visiting old churches and historical sites.

-Do you have a preferred Armenian national dish?

– I love it all. But nothing compares to a good chee kufta!

-How and where did you start acting?

– I was interested in acting very early on. I eventually started taking
drama classes in high school, found acting courses outside of school,
and began auditioning as a teenager in Los Angeles. When I left high
school, I was admitted to Carnegie Mellon University and studied in the
conservatory program there for theater. That opened me up to the stage,
which was new for me and immediately interesting. I later studied
at theJacques Lecoq School for physical theater in Paris. Alongside
the training, I have spent the last ten years actively pursuing a
stage life, working for various classical theater companies around
the US. I’ve always been interested in film and television though,
so I am currently working to pursue more such projects.

– Are there any Armenian or foreign actors and actresses, whom you
prefer to watch?

– That would be a very long list. There are so many I love to learn
from.

– Raffi, it is interesting to know – how did you get your role in
“The Vampire Diaries” ?

– I was lucky enough to get this part through an Audition.

– Have you been interested in the show, before you appeared there?

– I had not seen the show before, though I knew of it.

– And what about TVD stars? Have you already made friends with them?

– All the TVD actors were so, so kind and welcoming. I performed
most of my scenes with Marguerite Macintyre (sheriff Forbes), Ian
Somerhalder (Damon), and Michael Trevino (Tyler Lockwood), so I
spent the most time with them while on set. They were such generous,
funny people.

-You have embodied a wicked character in the show. Was it easy for
you to be like Markos?

-Markos was a great character to discover over the course of the
shoot. I was interested in the effortless power the writers worked
to give him. That was the best part – someone who could cause so much
trouble by doing so little!

– Do you have some common characteristic features with Markos?

– Like Markos, I am also 6’2″ and can grow a fierce beard:

-The cast of TVD has already announced about shooting the season 6.

Can we expect to see Markos also in that part of the show?

-That will be purely up the writers and, of course… the fans!

– By the way the fans of the show are very active. They like to discuss
their favorite characters in different forums. What opinions have
you received from TVD fans concerning to you and your character Markos?

– TVD fans are truly unique. I had no idea what a loyal following the
show maintains. Coming into something like that, you want to be sure
you don’t disappoint what the fans have come to love in the show. So
far, so good – I’ve received lots of kind, kind letters.

– TVD has a lot of fans also in Armenia. Is it possible, that one
day you will meet with them here in Armenia?

– I can’t wait to visit Armenia again. I’m so thankful that TVD has
created the opportunity for people there to connect with and take an
interest in my work. It really is very humbling.

– Many TVD fans are already in love with Markos. I think it will be
interesting for them to know whether Raffi’s heart is free?

– I don’t know about Raffi, but Markos is definitely single…:

P.S. By the way, Raffi Barsoumian has also appeared in the movie
called by an Armenian director Hayk Hambartsum. He
embodies an Armenian-American guy, who receives the opportunity to
play the role of the famous Armenian writer Misaq Metzarents.

Turkey says ‘bold steps’ of Armenia, Diaspora to begin ‘new era’

Armenia cannot accept the notion of “just memory” being advanced by
the Turkish leadership in regards to the 1915 Genocide, President
Serzh Sargsyan stated during a meeting with members of the Armenian
community of Argentina on July 7.

Last month Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu wrote in an article
published by the Hurriyet Daily News that “a new and more grounded
era of peace will reign between Turkey and Armenia if intellectuals
and politicians do their part to overcome the psychological barriers
on both sides and to build a ‘just memory’.”

While the Turkish leadership speaks of the need for a ‘just memory’
between Armenians and Turks, by the next step it is trying to
undermine justice, putting an equality sign between one and a half
million innocent victims, mostly elderly, women and children, and
the Turkish military who died as a result of adventurous actions
orchestrated by the leaders Ottoman Empire, said Sargsyan, as quoted
by his press office.

“It is not a ‘just memory’. We cannot accept such ‘just memory’. In
fact, this is an updated, improved, re-packaged version of the policy
of denial of the Armenian Genocide,” the Armenian leader emphasized.

Expressing his conviction that the day when Turkey will face its
history is not far away, Sargsyan said that Armenia will continue
activities towards achieving ininternational recognition and
condemnation of the Armenian Genocide.

“But we have to respect the memory of our ancestors, not only through
bringing our struggle till the end, but also by strengthening our
homeland using the talent and capabilities of every Armenian for the
benefit of the Homeland,” the Armenian leader stressed.

LES CHOIX DE SERGE SARKISSIAN QUANT A LA NOMINATION D’AMBASSADEURS SOULEVENT DES INQUIETUDES

ARMENIE

drogue a l’automne dernier.

Ankara Tempere Son Opposition A Un Etat Pour Les Kurdes Irakiens

ANKARA TEMPERE SON OPPOSITION A UN ETAT POUR LES KURDES IRAKIENS

TURQUIE

(AFP)

Google Maps "Gives More Grief" To Azerbaijan

GOOGLE MAPS “GIVES MORE GRIEF” TO AZERBAIJAN

July 7, 2014 – 14:11 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Google Maps seems to continue “giving grief” to
Azerbaijan. This time, Baku was made miserable over the service’s use
of Armenian toponyms in indication of the settlements in the Nagorno
Karabakh Republic.

According to Day.az, Google Maps committed a “gross error” in giving
double names – Armenian and Azeri ones – to the settlements.

The website went on to lament the fact that Google Maps failed to
fix any of the errors pointed out by Azeris and persists in allowing
news ones.

On June 19, Azerbaijan was in the throes of another fit: Artsakh was
indicated on Google maps as the Nagorno Karabakh Republic.

The fact outraged Baku which hurried to call the move as Google’s
“another provocation against Azerbaijan.”

The Republic Seismological Service Center under Azerbaijan National
Academy of Sciences (ANAS) “raised the alarm” on the fact.

“We are concerned about such provocations against Azerbaijan and its
territories by the international search system and the RSSC strongly
condemns such provocative changes against our country on the map,”
the Center said, according to APA.

APA further noted that this is not the first “provocation” committed
by Google: “Such cases took place earlier as well.”

Me Madeline n’a pas manqué

judo », conclut Yves Vidal.

Agriculture ministry: Armenia to have 8,000 tons of apricot this year
against 88,800 in 2013

YEREVAN, July 4. /ARKA/. Armenia’s apricot crop will not exceed 8,000
tons this year, while in 2013 the country had 88,800 tons, Deputy
Agriculture Minister Garnik Petrosyan said Friday as presented the
ministry’s outlooks at a new conference.

He said that this decline was due to freezing weather and heavy
snowfalls on March 30.
In his words, apricot exports total 214 tons this year, while a year
before 12,000 were exported by early July.

Petrosyan also said 19,000 tons of potatoes were exported in Jan-June
2014 against 7,000 tons in the same period a year before, and also
1,523 tons of early potatoes, while in 2013 no early potatoes were

Armenia will not be entered into Eurasian Union without Azerbaijan – analyst

July 05, 2014 | 01:03

YEREVAN. – If it continues like this, Armenia will not join the
Eurasian Economic Union (EaEU); no one will accept Armenia to where
Azerbaijan will not be, political scientist Manvel Sargsyan
toldArmenian News-NEWS.am.

In his conviction, even the opposite may occur and Azerbaijan would
join EaEU, but Armenia would not.

“We see that even Armenia’s authorities have no idea about the
specific problems because of which the country’s EaEU accession is
being delayed; this is somewhat bizarre,” Sargsyan noted.

In the analyst’s view, Azerbaijan’s–rather than Armenia’s–accession in
EaEU is more important for Russia.

“There are also other problems. [The other two EaEU members]
Kazakhstan and Belarus don’t share Russia’s proposals for the
Ukrainian issue. In fact, even the union’s founding countries fail to
agree on specific matters. [So,] now, what can be said about the other
countries?” Manvel Sargsyan concluded.

Even though Armenia’s Eurasian Economic Union accession document was
expected to be signed on Tuesday, July 1, the process is deferred
indefinitely.

Most Armenians want to join the Eurasian Economic Union – parliamentary speaker

YEREVAN July 4

– The Armenian people who are largely oriented at Russia want their
country to join the Eurasian Economic Union, Galust Saakyan, the
speaker of the Armenian National Assembly (parliament), told Itar-Tass
ahead of his first official visit to Moscow on July 6-7.

“Sociological surveys have revealed that about 70% of Armenia’s
population support and approve our stance on allied relations with
Russia and accession to the Eurasian Union,” the speaker stressed.

He said Armenia’s entry into the Eurasian Economic Union was its
independent and responsible decision. “This is our firm and
established position. We believe that these relations derive from our
common interests and are beneficial both for us and the Union. After
all, these are relations of equal partners. We do not feel pressure on
the part of anybody,” Saakyan went on to say.

The speaker explained the broad public support for the move by
Armenia’s close links to the cultural and educational system that had
existed in Soviet days, and even before.

“Historically, our artists, cultural figures and academics developed
mainly in the Russian medium,” Saakyan said.

“That helped us preserve, develop and multiply our cultural values in
the scientific sphere, for example, and make the most from our
contacts with Russia. Our intellectuals had a unique opportunity to
use the Russian language and Russian culture to become familiar with
world literature and culture, and we appreciate it,” the Armenian
parliament speaker stressed.
