The candidate matches, a tournament, qualifying for the World
Chess Championship 2011 will take place in Kazan, Russia, the FIDE
presidential board announced from Norwegian town of Tromso.

Despite the fact that Azerbaijan had already signed an agreement
and had transferred 150 000 eur to FIDE, the tournament was moved
to Kazan. It’s worth mentioning that Armenia’s Grand Master Levon
Aronian said earlier that he wouldn’t travel to Azerbaijan.

Given the previous agreement with Baku, it has been decided to keep
Azerbaijan’s Grand Master Shakhriyar Mamedyarov as the nominated
player. The candidates at Qualifying Tournament include Veselin
Topalov (Bulgaria), Magnus Carlsen (Norway), Vladimir Kramnik (Russia),
Levon Aronian (Armenia), Teimour Radjabov (Azerbaijan), Boris Gelfand
(Israel) and Gata Kamsky (USA).

In case of a possible withdraw of ex World Champion Veselin Topalov,
(the reasons were detailed in his open letter) FIDE’s head Kirsan
Ilyumkinov sad would send him a letter asking not to take hasty
decisions. However, if Topalov doesn’t change his mind, there will
be a substitute player – GM Alexander Grischuk.

SAMVEL NIKOYAN: LEVON TER-PETROSYAN MADE IT CLEAR FOR HIS ALLIES THAT HE WANTS TO RETIRE

PanARMENIAN.Net

Vice-Chairman of the RA National Assembly Samvel Nikoyan said that he
estimates negatively the statement of Armenia’s first president Levon
Ter-Petrosyan during the 16th congress of the Armenian National
Movement that Armenia’s development is impossible without the
Armenian-Turkish normalization and Karabakh conflict settlement.

The statement weakens the foundations of the Armenian state,
Nikoyan told a press conference in Yerevan. “Turkey conditions the
Armenian-Turkish border opening by NKR’s surrender to Azerbaijan. In
other words, the current stance of Armenia’s first president on the
Karabakh conflict does not differ from the one presented in his famous
article – War or Peace,” said Nikoyan.

“The statement was a message for the first president’s allies that his
stance on the Karabakh conflict remains unchanged and active actions
should not be expected of him. In other words, Levon Ter-Petrosyan made
it clear for his allies that he wants to retire,” concluded Nikoyan.

Ten years ago in California, Rick Norsigian purchased two small boxes
containing 65 glass negatives for $45. Today those glass negatives
are being identified as belonging to famous nature photographer Ansel
Adams, and are valued at $200 million.

CNN.com reports that the negatives are dated back to a 1937 darkroom
fire that destroyed 5,000 of Adam’s plates. David W. Streets, an art
dealer and appraiser believes that the photos were taken between 1919
and 1930s, before Adams became well known.

Photography expert Patrick Alt believes that Adams carried the
negatives to a class he was teaching in Pasadena, California, which
would help to explain how they wound up in a Los Angels warehouse.

This is where the person who sold the negatives to Norsigian found
them in a 1940s warehouse salvage.

The negatives are of Yosemite landscapes and San Francisco landmarks,
areas well known to Adams. “It is truly a missing link of Ansel Adams
and history and his career,” said Streets, who will put the works on
display tonight in Los Angeles.

Norsigian, an artist himself, has been working to prove the
authenticity of these photographs since the purchase in 2000.

Catholicos Karekin II Joins ABMDR Registry

CATHOLICOS KAREKIN II JOINS ABMDR REGISTRY

Karekin II undergoes a simple medical test to join registry

LOS ANGELES-His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians,
became the latest potential stem cell donor to join the ranks of the
Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry.

The pontiff’s membership in the registry was formalized on July 22,
following a simple, non-intrusive medical test that took place at in
Etchmiadzin. The brief standard test, which ABMDR volunteers administer
to all potential stem cell donors before they can join the registry,
confirmed that His Holiness is in excellent health and hence qualified
to donate bone marrow stem cells, should he be identified as a match
for a patient needing bone marrow transplantation.

Commenting on his decision to join the ABMDR, the Catholicos stated:
“This is an important day filled with blessings. I am pleased to note
that by becoming a potential donor one can help save someone’s life.

To this end, I encourage the citizens of Armenia as well as Armenians
throughout the Diaspora to actively participate in the work of the
registry, with the understanding that it might be one of us who can
give the gift of life by donating a little blood.”

“With this I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation to
all those who are supporting the Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry,
and once again encourage each and everyone to be of assistance by
registering as potential stem cell donors,” added the Catholicos.

An ABMDR representative in Yerevan said that the Catholicos
volunteered to join the registry as a personal gesture of support
and more importantly, to help raise public awareness of the critical
need for Armenians worldwide to register with the ABMDR as potential
stem cell donors. The same source added that since ethnic Armenians
have a unique genetic makeup, often their only chance of surviving
a life-threatening blood-related illness is to receive a bone marrow
transplant from an Armenian donor.

Last month, for the first time in the history of Armenia and
the Caucasus region, the ABMDR performed a stem cell harvesting
procedure in Yerevan. Thanks to the procedure, during which stem
cells were harvested from a healthy donor, a bone marrow transplant
was performed in Belgium, saving the life of a patient who suffered
from a potentially terminal blood-related disease.

As 2010 marks the tenth anniversary of the ABMDR, a series of special
events has been planned for throughout the year. In addition to
recruiting bone marrow donors, these events will seek support for
the establishment of a stem cell transplantation center in Armenia
and the creation of support groups throughout the world.

Established in 1999, the ABMDR, a nonprofit organization, helps
Armenians worldwide survive life-threatening blood-related illnesses
by recruiting and matching donors to those requiring bone marrow stem
cell transplants. To date, the registry has recruited over 15,000
donors across three continents, identified 1,696 patients, found
1,419 potential matches, and facilitated ten bone marrow transplants.
