ICJ DID NOT RECOGNIZE KOSOVO, ARMENIAN EXPERT SAYS

Neither the U.N. nor the International Court of Justice (ICJ)
recognized Kosovo’s independence, Director of the Institute of
Caucasus Alexander Iskandaryan told a press conference, commenting
on the recently stirred up excitement at the ICJ judgment.

“The court ruled no one prohibits national entities from declaring
independence, but nothing more than that,” Iskandaryan said. According
to him, the issue of Kosovo’s independence was settled by the U.S. as
far back as 1999 rather than by the ICJ in 2010.

“Fifteen persons voted, and none of them, except for the Mexican
representative, said anything in contrast to his state’s official
position. Just look, the Russia, Slovakian, Brazilian and Moroccan
representatives were against, which was actually known in advance,”
Iskandaryan said. He pointed out that all the Kosovo-related
developments are of political, rather than legal or demographic nature.

Speaking of Nagorno-Karabakh, the expert pointed out that it is no
so transparent. “Legally the issues are actually identical. However,
the Karabakh people won war by themselves, whereas Kosovo was helped
to win; the Karabakh people have been building their homeland by
themselves, whereas Kosovo is being built with outside assistance;
nobody is helping Karabakh, whereas Kosovo has U.S. backup,”
Iskandaryan said.

Fifty to seventy national entities worldwide are seeking independence
but they cannot be expected to gain it all at a time. “Gaining
independence is a long and complicated process, an issue not be
settled by court,” Iskandaryan said.

Turkey Alarmed At Lawsuit Filed By Armenians

TURKEY ALARMED AT LAWSUIT FILED BY ARMENIANS

Turkey is alarmed at the lawsuit filed by Armenians, Turkish studies
expert Artak Shakaryan told the reporters on Tuesday, commenting on
a lawsuit filed by Garbis Davouyan and Hrayr Turabian against the
Turkish government and two Turkish banks. According to him, presently
the Turkish analysts try to reassure the society that the issue is of
political essence, has no legal basis and that U.S. cannot sue Turkey.

“Turkey was not ready for such developments. They have just started
studying the lawsuit. Their responses suggest that they did not imagine
that Armenians can demand compensation in this way and in particular
can sue the state of Turkey,” he noted. In general, Armenians think
that Turks are very clever and the Turkish diplomacy thinks several
moves ahead, but the recent development prove the contrary. Turkey
will study the issue at least from 6 months up to a year, the expert
emphasized.

Garbis Davouyan and Hrayr Turabian, the representatives of the Armenian
Diaspora of U.S., have filed a suit against the Turkish government
and two major Turkish banks, demanding compensation for real estate
and property, including priceless artifacts presently housed in the
Turkish museums.

Calcutta: Armenian Kids Call Off Strike

ARMENIAN KIDS CALL OFF STRIKE

Calcutta Telegraph

Aug 3 2010
India

Students staying in the city’s Armenian College and Philanthropic
Academy called off their two-day-old hunger strike on Tuesday after
getting word from Armenia that their problems would be looked into.

Thirty-five of the 80 students of Armenian origin staying on the
Free School Street premises had refused food since Monday morning to
protest the alleged high-handedness of the authorities.

The students said their parents had met the church authorities in
Armenia and had been assured of action in the matter. “We are lifting
the strike and waiting to see how the authorities respond,” one of
the boys said. “A representative of His Holiness will come here from
Armenia on Wednesday to look into the situation,” said another.

The students have alleged that they were being forced to study in
“second-rate” institutions as the management was not funding their
education properly. The college runs a free school for Armenian
children up to Class X and also funds the college education of students
from the community.

Some elders in the community are supporting the students’ cause. “The
college has been gradually deteriorating. There were cuts in the
provisions for clothes, basic necessities and nutrition. Large amounts
were spent on unnecessary renovation and repairs,” said Sonia John,
a former honorary manager of the college and former chairperson of
the Armenian church committee (Armenian Holy Church of Nazareth).

“Father Khoren Hovhannisyan, the manager of the college and pastor
of the Armenians in India, had been defrocked but forgiven and then
sent to India to prove his worth as the manager,” said John.

“I had left a corpus of Rs 26.5 crore when I left in 2005. The church
earns huge sums from legacies left by wealthy Armenians. From Sir
Catchick Paul Chater’s legacy, the church earns Rs 14 crore every
year,” she said.

But this wealth was not being used to help the students who come from
Armenia, Iran and Iraq, John felt.

Jerusalem Sends 43-Year Water Bill To Church Of The Holy Sepulchre

JERUSALEM SENDS 43-YEAR WATER BILL TO CHURCH OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE

Palestine Note

Aug 3 2010
Washington

In a reversal of a tradition centuries old, the Church of the Holy
Sepulchre will now have to start paying for its water, the Jerusalem
Post reported Tuesday.

Thousands of tourists and religious pilgrims pass through the church’s
mammoth doorway every day, and with temperatures in the three digits
during the summer months, many walk straight to water fountains for
refreshment. This service is offered by the church for free, but that
may not be the case for long.

“We are providing water to the pilgrims and tourist[s] for free,” said
doorkeeper Jawal Hussein. “It’s not fair. We should not have to pay.”

Jerusalem’s public water utility, Gihon, is not only asking for the
church to begin paying for water as of this month. Gihon has also
demanded the church pay for all water used since 1967, when Israel
annexed the Old City following the 1967 war.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is one of Christianity’s holiest
sites, considered by many to be the site of Jesus’ crucifixion,
burial, and resurrection.

The water tradition was first set into legal stone by the Ottoman
Empire in 1852 and was later continued by both British and Jordanian
custodians, according to Asia News. But now the power of the Ottoman
Emperor has passed down to the Jerusalem government.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is not managed by any one authority
that can answer to Gihon, however. The holy site is managed by a
Byzantine system of power sharing among various Christian sects,
including Catholics, Greek Orthodox, Armenians, Copts, and others.

This network of caretakers is known as the “Status Quo.”

“I’m part of the Status Quo,” said one Armenian priest who spoke
with Ynet anonymously. “This will be brought up for discussion by
the Status Quo and then we will make a decision.”

The Israeli government has tried to interfere in the church’s affairs
before. In 1970, the High Court ruled that two small sanctuaries
should be given to Ethiopian religious authorities to oversee. The
court order was never followed by the Status Quo.

It has yet to be seen how the Status Quo will respond to the water
bill. One Franciscan monk argued that the church is “doing a favor to
the pilgrims and tourists” by handing out water. “The government must
be earning something from [their visit]. We are doing them a favor.”

The monk did admit, however, that “if the synagogues and mosque have
to pay, then I guess we have to pay as well.”

Gihon said “a standard price of about $4 dollars per cubic meter for
water from all religious institutions in the Old City, including
mosques, synagogues and churches,” JPost reported. “It should be
stressed that this is a uniform fee for all,” the utility’s statement
continued.

US Art Dealer Jailed In Celebrity Investor Scam

US ART DEALER JAILED IN CELEBRITY INVESTOR SCAM

Agence France Presse
Aug 3 2010
NEW YORK

A US judge on Tuesday sentenced a New York art dealer to up to 18
years prison and a hefty fine for stealing 120 million dollars from
big-name investors, including American tennis star John McEnroe.

Lawrence Salander, 61, admitted in March to cheating his clients
between 2004 and 2007 by selling art that he did not own, or convincing
them to invest in fraudulent schemes, the Manhattan district attorney
said in a statement.

One of the victims was Hollywood actor Robert De Niro’s father.

With the profits Salander bought a luxurious Manhattan residence and
a private airplane.

Salander and his gallery will also “be responsible for paying
approximately 120 million dollars in restitution to the 30 victims,”
the statement read.

The judge sentenced Salander to between six and 18 years prison,
with the time spent in prison dependant on good behavior.

McEnroe lost two million dollars when he bought what Salander
fraudulently claimed were two pieces by Arshile Gorky, a US artist
of Armenian origin.

Salander’s “widespread fraud and calculated betrayal created ripples
that spread from individual victims to the broader art world,” said
Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance.

Kerry Pulls Baku Envoy Nominee From Today’s Vote

KERRY PULLS BAKU ENVOY NOMINEE FROM TODAY’S VOTE
By Laura Rozen

Politico

Aug 3 2010

The U.S. has not had an ambassador in Baku since last July, and it
looks like it may be a while longer before one arrives.

Last week I reported that Matthew Bryza, President Barack Obama’s
nominee to be ambassador to Azerbaijan, was running into opposition
from the Armenian National Committee of America, a lobbying group.

Though Bryza was placed last Friday on the list of two dozen ambassador
nominees to be voted on today by the Senate Foreign Relations
Committee, I am now getting word that committee chairman Sen. John
Kerry (D-Mass.) has pulled him from the list expected to go up for a
unanimous consent motion at the committee’s afternoon business meeting.

“There has been a request hold over nominee Matt Bryza, so the
committee will not consider his nomination until after recess,”
SFRC spokesman Frederick Jones tells POLITICO.

Hill sources say Democratic Sens. Barbara Boxer of California and
Robert Menendez of New Jersey had expressed concerns about the
nomination.

Bryza is expected to come up for a vote at the committee’s next
business meeting next month, a Senate staffer said.

UPDATE: All the other nominees were voted out of committee at the
Tuesday business meeting, a staffer said.

Boxing: Stadium Set For European Title Fights

STADIUM SET FOR EUROPEAN TITLE FIGHTS

RTE.ie
Aug 3 2010
Ireland

The National Stadium in Dublin will host its first European title
fight on 11 September when European super middleweight champion Brian
Magee tops the bill at the South Circular Road venue.

Magee will make the first defence of his European belt against
German-based Armenian Roman Aramian, while Kiko ‘La Sensacin’
Martinez faces another Armenian in the form of Arsen Martirosyan for
the European super bantamweight title.

It all adds up to a huge night of championship boxing with a third
title bout on the card featuring the Dublin rivals Anthony Fitzgerald
and Robbie Long for the Irish super middleweight title.

There will be further Dublin interest on the undercard with European
Union and Irish super bantamweight champion Paul Hyland also featuring
alongside exciting Liffeyside talents Gavin ‘The Pimpernel’ Prunty
and light heavyweight Brendan Fitzpatrick, who makes his pro debut
under the guidance of Jim Rock.

The card will include the Cork-based Cuban trio of Alexei Acosta, Mike
Perez and Luis Garcia as they look to extend their unbeaten records.

Promoter Brian Peters believes fight fans are in for a real treat.

‘There hasn’t been a European title fight in Dublin since Bernard
Dunne lost his title to Kiko at the old Point in 2007, so to have two
in the one night and an all-Dublin Irish title fight on the card as
well means it should be a night to remember,’ said Peters.

‘Brian Magee has been one of Irish boxing’s great servants and to
win the European title in the manner he did by winning the title on
the road in such emphatic fashion was a fantastic achievement.

‘I’m delighted to be able to give him the opportunity to make his
first defence at home in what should be a tough assignment against
Roman Aramian.’

The Hunky Dorys Fight Night marks the first defence of the title
Magee won on the road in January when he stopped local hero Mads
Larsen in Denmark.

The Lisburn southpaw is delighted to be back on home ground as he
defends his belt at a venue which has always held a special place in
his heart.

‘I’ve always had fond memories of boxing at the Stadium,’ said Magee.

‘I won Irish titles there from the juvenile ranks all the way through
to the seniors, as well as boxing in internationals for Ireland.

‘It’s great to return to such familiar surroundings to make my first
defence and I know I’ll get great support there.’

ANKARA: Armenian Artist Hakverdian’s Works To Be Released In Turkey

ARMENIAN ARTIST HAKVERDIAN’S WORKS TO BE RELEASED IN TURKEY

Hurriyet
Aug 3 2010
Turkey

Turkish music companies have begun to move to secure the copyrights
to the works of legendary Armenian artist Rupen Hakverdian,
whose songs have been popular across Europe. Conveying his love to
Turkish intellectuals working for reconciliation between Turks and
Armenians, Hakverdian says, ‘Stay away from nationalism; ignorance
feeds nationalism’

Illustrating the cultural exchange that occurs despite continued
political tension, the works of legendary Armenian musician Rupen
Hakverdian are now set for release in the Turkish market as local
companies queue to secure copyrights for the music.

“It makes me happy that my songs are being performed in different
languages,” Hakverdian told the Hurriyet Daily News & Economic Review
in a recent interview in his house, in which he is preparing for a
new album.

Although his works were banned during the Soviet era, Hakverdian’s
music was nonetheless performed in languages as diverse as French
and Czech.

Hakverdian said he had received many demands from Turkey to release
his works in the country although he did not mention the names of
the companies.

The demand for his songs points toward the larger trend of
cross-cultural exchange. “Borders are closed but the way for
intercultural interaction is open,” Hakverdian said, adding that
Armenian culture in the present eponymous republic was largely under
the effect of Turkish culture.

“What we call unique Armenian culture has been created by
Istanbul-based western Armenians and Anatolian Armenians. Armenia
does not have its own culture,” he said. “It has been affected by
other cultures.”

Emphasizing his point, Hakverdian said Armenian artists had stolen
Turkish and Azerbaijani music. “In the past, Armenian songs were
stolen in Turkey but now it is the same in Armenia. This is a big
mistake. We should not have repeated the same mistakes.”

Noting that many in Armenia would disagree with his statement, he said:
“I wish I were mistaken but unfortunately, all I said is true.

Of course intercultural exchange is possible, I am not against it
but everything should have a style – stealing cannot be accepted.”

Furthermore, the constant Turkish and Armenian squabbling over the
cultural ownership of anonymous songs was tiring, Hakverdian said.

“What is the point of discussing the ownership of anonymous songs?

What is important is how they make us feel,” he said, pointing to a
healthier attitude on the issue in the Balkans. “There is no fight
for songs in the Balkans. This is why they have become richer in the
cultural field.”

‘I am estranged from this city’

Despite numerous tours around the world, Hakverdian said he had never
been to Turkey, but added that he would gladly come if he received
an invitation.

Noting that many friends had migrated overseas after Armenia’s
independence, Hakverdian said he felt alone, a feeling he shares in
his songs with his listeners.

“I’ve become estranged from this city [Yerevan] and its people. I
prefer to get in touch with an intellectual Turk rather than an
ignorant Armenian,” he said. “What I want to say is that the human
being comes first before [anything else]. Being able to find a common
language with them is important.”

Hakverdian said he appreciated the recent steps taken by Turkish
intellectuals to bring the peoples of the two countries together,
sending them his love and greetings. “They are struggling for the
peace of two peoples. They are worthy of appreciation.”

He said he had met many Turkish artists during his tours, having
discussions with them.

Most important, however, was staying clear of nationalism: “Let’s act
with humane values and justice. Nationalism poisons each of us. It
is only fed by ignorance,” he said.

As for the contributions of Turkey’s goodwill ambassador, Zulfu
Livaneli, to the reconciliation process between Turkey and Greece,
Hakverdian said he would be very happy to serve for the establishment
of a bridge of peace between Turkey and Armenia.
