German Chancellor Angel Merkel’s statement that Ankara is the major
obstacle to solving the Cyprus problem, made during her visit to
Cyprus, has caused a negative response in Turkey.

According to CNNturk, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmed Davutoglu called
on Merkel to be unbiased regarding the Cyprus issue. Turkey has always
wished for Germany to intensify its role in solving the Cyprus problem,
believing that it will have a positive impact. However, Ms.

Merkel’s recent statement raises doubt, said Davutoglu, stressing that
Turkey would always support the efforts of Berlin in the peaceful
settlement of the Cyprus problem, if Germany will stick to an
“objective” position.

Lebanon Government Collapses After Ministers’ Pullout

LEBANON GOVERNMENT COLLAPSES AFTER MINISTERS’ PULLOUT

Asbarez
January 12th, 2011

BEIRUT (Combined Sources)-Lebanon’s coalition government collapsed
Wednesday after 11 ministers affiliated with the opposition pulled
out of the cabinet amid political tensions over a US-led tribunal
probing the 2005 assassination of Lebanese leader Rafik al-Hariri.

The move disintegrates the year-old government led by Hariri’s son,
Prime Minister Saad Hariri, who was in Washington meeting with
President Obama when the walk out resulted in the collapse, which
ultimately might force his resignation.

Among the ministers that submitted resignations was industry minister
Apraham Dedeyan, who was the representative of the Lebanese-Armenian
community.

Tensions have mounted during the past several months as Lebanon awaited
the results of the UN-led and US-backed tribunal’s investigation into
the Rafik Hariri assassination. In recent weeks, Saudi Arabia and Syria
have been attempting to broker a deal that would essentially force
Saad Hariri to withdraw his government’s support for the tribunal in
order to maintain Lebanese and regional stability.

A delegation representing Lebanon’s opposition Tuesday met with
Lebanese President Michel Suleiman urging him to convene an
extraordinary government session to adopt, with the participation
of all political forces, measures that would ensure stability in the
country. The president agreed to forge ahead by promising to contact
the prime minister and bring him to the negotiating table.

On Wednesday, the presidential office reported that Saad Hariri
had refused the opposition’s proposal, saying that he would not be
pressured to take part in a government meeting at the 11th-hour and
rejected to impede the international tribunal.

Opposition forces gathered Tuesday night at a meeting, which was
attended by Reform and Progress party chairman Gen. Michel Aoun, the
Armenian Revolutionary Federation Central Committee chairman Hovig
Mkhitarian, “Marada” movement leader and parliament member Sleyman
Frenzhieh, opposition advisor Ali Hassan-Khalil and political adviser
to Hezbollah’s secretary general, Hussein Khalil.

“Following our last bid to resolve matters through our call for
an immediate Cabinet session and after our call was turned down
by the other bloc and in order to pave the way for the formation
of a new government that would be able to assume its duties in the
upcoming stage, we announce our resignation from the government,”
said Lebanon’s Energy Minister Gebran Bassil, who read the opposition
statement Wednesday.

“The prime minister is faced with choosing either Beirut and Washington
or Beirut and any other capital,” he said, adding that the decision
to leave the government conforms to Lebanese law.

The White House issued a statement on the Hariri meeting, saying Obama
“stressed the importance of the work of the Special Tribunal for
Lebanon as a means to help end the era of political assassinations
with impunity in Lebanon.”

Opposition lawmakers called on Lebanese President Michel Suleiman to
act quickly on forming a new Cabinet.

26 Armenian Organizations Demand Warsaw’s Explanations

Twenty-six youth organizations from Armenia, Nagorno-Karabakh,
Javakhk and Diaspora wrote an open letter condemning recent statement
of the Polish Foreign Ministry forbidding its citizens to visit
Nagorno-Karabakh, “as it is Azerbaijan’s territory according to the
international law”. Moreover, Poland’s foreign office demands getting
“permission” of the official Baku before visiting Nagorno-Karabakh
().

In the letter Armenian youth organizations recall that the
Artsakh people proclaimed independence in the letter and spirit of
international law. “We would like to add that Polish and Armenian
people historically had friendly relations. It is not mere chance
that the Armenian cavalry, being a part of the Polish army, managed
to defeat enemy and destroy sultan when the Turks were getting ready
to conquer Vienna and intrude into Europe. It is just an episode
of the friendly relations between our nations. In this regard, we,
the representatives of the Armenian youth organizations, condemn at
least odd and obscure anti-Armenian decision of the Polish Foreign
Ministry and demand that it should be reversed,” the letter says.

Turkish PM Accused German Chancellor Of Not Knowing History Of Cypru

TURKISH PM ACCUSED GERMAN CHANCELLOR OF NOT KNOWING HISTORY OF CYPRUS ISSUE

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan responded to criticism
of German Chancellor Angela Merkel concerning Ankara’s stance on the
Cyprus issue, Worldbulletin website reported.

“I guess Ms. Merkel has forgotten what she has said. It was herself
who said that it was wrong to admit southern Cyprus into the European
Union,” Erdogan said at a joint press conference in Doha following
his meeting with Prime Minister of Qatar Hamad bin Jasim bin Jabir
Al Thani.

He added that she makes such statements after visiting Greek Cyprus.

Erdogan accused German Chancellor of not knowing about history of the
Cyprus issue, stressing that Merkel probably thinks that the Cyprus
issue was a process which began during her political power.

“If she had had the chance to talk to former leader of the main
opposition party, she would have known those who were responsible
for the Cyprus issue,” Turkish PM noted.

In the course of talks with President of Cyprus Dimitris Christofias,
Angela Merkel criticized Turkey’s position on the Cyprus settlement
and promised to put a lot of restrictions in the negotiations on
Turkey’s accession to the EU.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has criticized Turkey’s position on
a Cyprus settlement and promised to put a lot of restrictions in the
negotiations on Turkey’s accession to the EU.

“We see that you are taking many steps and we also see that the Turkish
side is not responding accordingly to these steps,” Merkel said after
talks with President of Cyprus Dimitris Christofias in Nicosia, the
divided capital, RIA Novosti reported quoting the press service of
the Cyprus Government .

Chancellor said that her government wants Turkey’s EU entry talks
to continue “irrespective of what the decision will be at the end,”
but warned they won’t conclude unless the country opens its ports to
Cypriot trade.

Merkel explained that they put a lot of restrictions in the accession
of the negotiations, while Turkey fails to implement the Ankara
protocol.

Cyprus de facto is divided between Greek Cypriots and Turkish
Cypriots, and to the north of the island is occupied by Turkish
troops. The international community recognizes the Republic of Cyprus,
whose government are Greek Cypriots, and does not recognize the
self-proclaimed republic in the north. The leaders of the Cypriot
communities are negotiating the reunification of the island, but
without significant progress. Turkey has formally supported the
process, but also supports Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu.

One of the conditions of Turkey’s accession to the EU is recognition of
the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey at the beginning of XX century.

UCLA ASA To Host Dr. Jack Kevorkian Lecture On Saturday

UCLA ASA TO HOST DR. JACK KEVORKIAN LECTURE ON SATURDAY

Asbarez
Monday, January 10th, 2011
LOS ANGELES

Dr. Jack Kevorkian, one of America’s most prominent physicians, and
widely considered a leading expert on Euthanasia, will be the guest
of honor at a lecture at University of California, Los Angeles’s
Royce Hall on Saturday, January 15 at 7 p.m.

The event, hosted by the Armenian Students’ Association at UCLA
(ASA) in collaboration with the Armenian-American Medical Society
of California (AAMSC), will include a lecture, audience discussion
and private reception at UCLA, one of the country’s top academic and
research institutions.

The event will be moderated by UCLA alumnus and former Foreign Minister
of the Republic of Armenia, Dr. Raffi Hovannisian.

Since the 1950s, because of Dr. Kevorkian’s interest as a pathologist
in determining the time of a patient’s death, he was dubbed by
colleagues “Dr. Death,” a name later picked up by the media in
the 1990s.

Topics to be discussed include his childhood in Pontiac, Michigan;
his parents’ experience as survivors of the Armenian Genocide of 1915;
and his life after his prison release.

The lecture and following question and answer period will be held at
UCLA’s Royce Hall. General admission is $20 and $15 for UCLA Students.

Parking for the event is available at Parking Lot 5, off Sunset Blvd.

340 Royce Drive Los Angeles, CA 90095.

Following the lecture, the ASA will host a private reception for VIP
ticket holders which benefits the ASA and AAMSC scholarship programs.

Tickets can be purchased at Ticketmaster here. For more
information, contact UCLA Central Ticket Office (310)
825-2101 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting (310) 825-2101
end_of_the_skype_highlighting Will-call will be at the Box Office
prior to the event. Photo ID will be required.

Kevorkian, a world renowned pathologist and controversial advocate and
practitioner of physician-assisted suicide, who says he has assisted in
more than 130 suicides, was tried five times for assisted suicide in
the 1990s. It was only in his last trial in 1999 that the prosecution
dropped the assisted suicide charge and charged him with murder. The
trial resulted with Kevorkian being convicted of second-degree
murder and sentenced to 10 to 25 years in prison for assisting in
the suicide of a man in the final stages of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral
Sclerosis). Kevorkian was denied parole in 2005 but released on parole
in June 2007 for poor health after serving 8 years in prison.

Kevorkian, believes in the fundamental right of an individual to make
end-of-life decisions. Following his prison release, Kevorkian said he
would abstain from assisting any more terminal patients with death, and
his role in the matter would strictly be to persuade states to change
their laws on assisted suicide. At the time of Kevorkian’s release,
Oregon was the only state to legally permit doctor-assisted suicide;
Montana and Washington state have since legalized it as well.

He has travelled throughout the US lecturing at Universities and
appearing on numerous television news programs.

In 2008, Kevorkian ran for Michigan’s 9th Congressional seat as an
independent. He came in third place and received 2.6% of the vote.

“We’re honored to have Dr. Kevorkian attend the lecture in person
and discuss the issues to which he has dedicated his life,” said UCLA
ASA president Nina Babaian.

“As members of a non-profit organization with the goal of mentoring
the next generation, the AAMSC is very glad to work with UCLA’s ASA
on hosting Dr. Kevorkian. He has inspired and provoked much thought
amongst medical professionals,” said AAMSC president Dr. Vicken
Sepilian.

“Dr. Kevorkian was a polarizing figure who altered the course of
history in late 20th Century America – not just in the field of
medicine, but across the spectrum of civil liberties,” said UCLA
alumnus, and Arpa International Film Festival director Alex Kalognomos,
who will serve as the event’s emcee. The Kevorkian documentary “Right
to Exit” was featured at the Los Angeles-based festival in 2010.

Kevorkian was the subject of the HBO film You Don’t Know Jack, which
premiered April 24, 2010. The film was nominated for 15 Emmy Awards.

Kevorkian was portrayed by Academy Award-winning actor Al Pacino who
was awarded the 2010 Best Actor Emmy for his performance as Kevorkian.

The film co-starred Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon and the film
continues to garner award recognition from the Golden Globes, Screen
Actors Guild, Satellite Awards, and Television Critics Association
Awards.

at least 130 patients to that end. He famously said that “dying is
not a crime.” Beginning in 1999 Kevorkian served eight years of
a 10-to-25-year prison sentence for second-degree murder. He was
released on parole on June 1, 2007, on condition that he would not

Seven Armenian-Americans were elected as Democratic Party delegates
in elections throughout California this weekend, reported the Armenian
National Committee of America – Western Region.

Based on unofficial results, Armenian-Americans were elected from the
43rd, 53rd and 58th Districts. In the 43rd District: Michael Kiaman,
Juliette Minassian, Nayiri Nahabedian, and Adrin Nazarian were elected
out of 47 candidates. In the 53rd District, Varo Asorian won in a

“The ANCA-WR would like to congratulate all the Armenian-American

Government Affairs Director. He continued, “we are encouraged that
so many Armenian Americans participated in this weekend’s elections
as candidates and as voters”.

In the Glendale/Burbank based 43rd Assembly District, two competing
slates of candidates included four (4) Armenians as a part of their
teams, while two (2) Armenian candidates ran as a part of neither
slate. Over 300 Democrats voted in the tightly contested race,
which went into a recount late into the night. The 43rd AD race saw
Armenians elected from both slates.

“Yesterday was a good day for the ANCA,” said Garen Yegparian, Chair

Because of our efforts, each slate was able to get one more
