STILL PURSUING JUSTICE FOUR YEARS AFTER DINK MURDER

“No justice in 4 years” was one of the messages on the signs carried
by thousands of people commemorating assassinated Turkish-Armenian
journalist Harnt Dink on the fourth anniversary of his death.

Istanbul – BİA News Center20 January 2011, Thursday Thousands
of people gathered in front of the Agos newspaper in Istanbul on
Wednesday, 19 January, to commemorate Turkish-Armenian journalist
Hrant Dink. The founder of the Armenian Agos weekly was lethally shot
in front of his office in Å~^iÅ~_li (Istanbul) on 19 January 2007 at
around 3.00 pm.

Friends of Dink demanded once more to shed light on the assassination
of Hrant Dink and other unsolved political murders and reiterated
their demand for justice.

Many attendants of the ceremony left red carnations and lit candles at
the place Dink was killed. They carried sings featuring slogans like
“No justice in 4 years”, “No parliament in 4 years”. They chanted
the slogans “We are all Hrant Dink”, “Justice for “Hrant Dink” and
“The people will call the murderers to account”.

Dink’s memory of Mrs Beatris Groups who had gathered at Taksim Square
and in Mecidiyeköy started walking towards the Agos newspaper office
in Å~^iÅ~_li at 1.30 pm. A third group joined by artist Mustafa
Alabora walked from the Taksim district to the Armenian weekly.

Nukhet İpekci, daughter of killed journalist Abdi İpekci, delivered
a speech from the balcony of the newspaper office. Dink’s widow Rakel
Dink greeted the crowd from a window. The street was closed to traffic
because of the commemoration ceremony.

The ceremony started with a playback of Hrant Dink’s voice. In the
recording, Dink described his memories of 70-year-old Mrs Beatris
who used to come from France to her abandoned village. Dink recalled
a conversation with her daughter after Mrs Beatris’ death, when she
had come to Sivas to collect her mother’s body.

The son of Mrs Beatris had told Dink on the phone that it would be
the most natural thing to bury their mother’s body right there. After
Dink had summarized the conversation, he said, “Yes, the Armenians
do have an eye on that land because our roots are there. We have an
eye on it but not to go and cease it but to reach its base”.

Speech of Nukhet İpekci Also members of the Platform for Social
Conscience established by the families of people killed in unsolved
political murders attended the ceremony. Nukhet İpekci delivered
a speech on behalf of the relatives of Kemal Turkler, Ahmet Kaya,
Sabahattin Ali, Orhan Yavuz, Dogan Oz, Necdet Bulut, Akın Ozdemir,
Abdi İpekci, Cevat Yurdakul, Cavit Orhan Tutengil, Umit Kaftancıoglu,
Sevinc Ozguner, Mehmet Zeki Tekiner, İlhan Erdost, Metin Göktepe,
Necip Hablemitoglu, Yusuf Ekinci, Yasemin Cebenoyan, Onat Kutlar,
Hasan Ocak, Muammer Aksoy, Cetin Emec, Turan Dursun, Musa Anter,
Ugur Mumcu, Nesimi Cimen, Behcet Aysan and Metin Altıok

İpekci, daughter of the General Publications Director of the Milliyet
daily, Abdi İpekci, reminded Hrant Dink’s statement “I do not like
portrait sculptures, I like people”. She demanded to disclose the
fact behind the unsolved political murders as soon as possible. “We
are after every single murder. Every single one of these murders is
known as a crime against humanity. We expect justice to be dispensed
as soon as possible”, she said.

Petition for the investigation of 31 people The joint attorneys of
the Dink family emphasized that they submitted a petition two days
earlier to demand an investigation about 31 people. The commemoration
ceremony was attended by writer Vedat Turkali, writer Adalet Agaoglu,
Ahmet Kaya’s widow Gulten Kaya, writer Sırrı Sureyya Onder, writer
Oral CalıÅ~_lar, DİSK General President Suleyman Celebi, artists
Mehmet Ali Alabora, Mustafa Alabora, Ferhat Tunc, Zeynep Tanbay, Haluk

Many of the attendants of the ceremony will gather again on 7 February
at 10.00 am in front of the BeÅ~_iktaÅ~_ (Istanbul) Courthouse prior
to that day’s hearing of the Hrant Dink murder case. Hrant Dink was
also commemorated by a torchlight walk from Takism to Galata Square
(central Istanbul) in the evening of 19 January. (BB/EO/VK)

BAKU: Vice-Speaker Not Ruling Out Possible Resumption Of War In Kara

VICE-SPEAKER NOT RULING OUT POSSIBLE RESUMPTION OF WAR IN KARABAKH

Jan 20 2011
Azerbaijan

‘The war around Nagorno Karabakh has not ended and the world community
should know that hostilities may resume any time’, vice-speaker said.

‘In line with recommendations of international organizations,
Azerbaijan continues participation in negotiation processes and is
trying to resolve the Karabakh conflict peacefully. But Azerbaijan
continues military training, since no one in the world takes a weak
country’, vice speaker of the Azerbaijani parliament Bahar Muradova
told reporters Thursday.

Without economic and military assistance Azerbaijan will not be
able to strengthen its positions in negotiation and other processes,
the vice speaker said.

‘Azerbaijan has reached significant achievements in military sphere, as
well as other fields. We are thus demonstrating the opposite side that
Azerbaijan will never accept the loss of its lands and the creation
of the second Armenian state in its territory. This attempt will be
averted by all means and even through war if necessary’, Muradova said.

Armenia Displays Sophisticated Air Defense Systems

ARMENIA DISPLAYS SOPHISTICATED AIR DEFENSE SYSTEMS
Emil Danielyan

Georgian Daily

Georgia
Jan 20 2011

After several years of silence on the issue, Armenia has officially
confirmed the existence of the sophisticated Russian-supplied S-300
air defense system in its military arsenal and demonstrated this by
broadcasting video evidence.

The authorities in Yerevan have also approved a five-year plan to
modernize the Armenian armed forces, which envisages the acquisition
of precision-guided surface-to-surface missiles.

These developments reflect Armenia’s intensifying arms race with
Azerbaijan in the unresolved conflict over Karabakh. They were
clearly made possible by a further deepening of Russian-Armenian
military ties that led to the signing of a new defense agreement
between Moscow and Yerevan in August 2010. The accord signed during
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s state visit to Armenia extended
Russia’s lease on a military base in the country by 24 years, until
2044, and upgraded its security mission. It also commits Moscow to
supplying the Armenian army with “modern and compatible weaponry and
(special) military hardware” (Armenian Public Television, December 25).

Moscow had significantly reinforced the combat capacity of the
Russian base, headquartered in the northern Armenian city of Gyumri,
by deploying a division of S-300 systems and two dozen MiG-29 fighter
jets there in the late 1990’s. The two countries agreed to jointly
defend Armenia’s airspace in the same period. Their integrated air
defense system was given a “regional” status by the Russian-led
Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in early 2007.

Moreover, in 2007, Russian military officials first indicated that the
Armenian military had its own S-300’s. The then commander-in-chief
of the Russian Air Force, Colonel-General Vladimir Mikhailov, said
that Moscow was modernizing Armenian air defense capabilities
and would continue doing so in future. Mikhailov’s deputy,
Lieutenant-General Aytech Bizhev, revealed that as part of that
assistance, Armenian officers had been trained to operate the
long-range S-300 surface-to-air missile system known for its precision
(, 15 February 2007).

It was not until December 20, 2010 that Yerevan explicitly confirmed
possessing S-300’s. In a written statement, the Armenian defense
ministry stated that Defense Minister, Seyran Ohanian, visited an
anti-aircraft military unit and “familiarized himself with the work of
the state-of-the-art S-300 air-defense systems.” The statement added
that Ohanian also inaugurated a new Russian-Armenian “air-defense
command point” featuring S-300’s.

Five days later, the ministry aired on state television a ten-minute
report showcasing the Russian-made systems, test-firing missiles in an
undisclosed location in Armenia and providing a detailed description
of their technical-tactical characteristics. The footage also featured
an excerpt from a speech delivered by Ohanian to military personnel.

“We have acquired new means [of air defense] … and those acquisitions
will be expanded in 2011. The air defenses of our enemies do not
have means of this type and quantity,” Ohanian said (Armenian Public
Television, December 25).

Neither Ohanian, nor other military officials specified precisely when
the Armenian military received the S-300’s or at what cost. Armenia’s
official defense budget in 2010 was an equivalent of about $400
million, a sum comparable to the market price of two or more S-300
divisions. Moscow is thus likely to have delivered the systems to
its main regional ally at a knockdown price or even free of charge.

Earlier in December 2010, Armenian President, Serzh Sargsyan,
and the National Security Council approved the State Program of
Developing Weaponry and Military Hardware in 2011-2015. Sargsyan’s
office released few details of the modernization plan, saying only
that the Armenian army will procure more “state-of-the-art weapons”
(Statement by the Armenian presidential press service, December 11).

The modernization plan is essentially based on two documents approved
in August 2010 by an ad hoc government task force. Ohanian told
journalists then that Armenia will enhance its “long-range strike
capacity” and will be able to “thwart enemy movements deep inside the
entire theater of hostilities.” Ohanian did not deny that the planned
arms acquisitions are a response to the ongoing military build-up in
Azerbaijan and Baku’s growing threats to resolve the Karabakh conflict
by force (, August 10). Azerbaijani defense spending,
fuelled by the country’s massive oil revenues, is projected to total
over $3 billion and will slightly surpass Armenia’s entire state
budget in 2011.

In a subsequent interview with Radio Free Europe’s Armenian service,
Ohanian noted that the precision-guided weapons sought by Yerevan
would potentially target the “strategic facilities” of Armenia’s
hostile neighbors. The Armenian military is believed to already
possess short-range tactical missiles capable of striking military
and civilian targets in Azerbaijan (RFE/RL, December 13).

The linkage between the military modernization plan and the
Russian-Armenian defense pact was effectively acknowledged by Artur
Baghdasarian, the Secretary of the National Security Council.

Baghdasarian also reaffirmed the two governments’ intention to set
up joint defense ventures to be based in Armenia. The Kremlin called
into question its supposedly pro-Armenian stance when it pointedly
declined to refute, prior to Medvedev’s visit to Yerevan, Russian press
reports that it also plans to sell S-300’s to Azerbaijan. Armenian
opposition figures and commentators voiced serious concerns about this
possibility, saying that it would change the balance of forces in the
conflict zone in Azerbaijan’s favor. Armenian officials dismissed
such fears, with Ohanian claiming that his forces “know the ways
of reducing the effectiveness of such systems” (Armenian Public
Television, December 25).

Whatever the reality, Yerevan sees no option other than to
continue relying heavily on military cooperation with Moscow. With
internationally mediated Armenian-Azerbaijani peace talks remaining
deadlocked and the vast majority of Armenians still strongly opposed to
any peaceful settlement that would place Karabakh under Azeri control,
Armenia currently seems to lack viable policy alternatives.

LIFE AT THE MELKONIAN AGAIN

LIFE AT THE MELKONIAN AGAIN

Gibrahayer
Alexander-Michael Hadjilyra

Last Sunday, 16 January 2011, the grounds of the Melkonian were filled
with life once again on the occasion of the annual parerarnerou
hokehankisd. Older and newer Melkoniantsis, as well as friends of
the Melkonian, were joined together to commemorate the two immortal
benefactors, Agha Krikor and Agha Garabed Melkonian of Caesarea,
whose gift to the Armenian nation was perhaps the greatest of all. The
old and the young prayed in front of the tampan, proudly sang the
school’s kaylerk and then wandered around the premises. Some sat at
the benches between the old and the new buildings, reminiscing old
times and sharing new memories, while others had their pictures taken
in front of the Tampan, the Aypoupen, Mayr Hayastan or one of the 7
sandstone statues. But that was between 11:30-12:30 of that Sunday. An
hour later, life was no more at the Melkonian and the parerarner were
once again alone, waiting…

Two Armenian Presidents Address Cyprus Parliament Turkish-Armenian R

TWO ARMENIAN PRESIDENTS ADDRESS CYPRUS PARLIAMENT TURKISH-ARMENIAN RAPPROCHEMENT “DESTROYED” SAYS SARGSYAN

Gibrahayer
Thursday 13 January 2011

President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan denounced the current Turkish
government’s assertive foreign policy as “neo-Ottoman” imperialist
designs aimed at forcing Turkey’s neighbors into submission.

17.01.2011 – Emil Danielyan – Azadutiun – President Sargsyan accused
Turkey of reversing its rapprochement with Armenia and voiced strong
opposition to Ankara’s perceived efforts to take on a leadership role
in the region as he paid a state visit to Cyprus on Monday.

In a speech delivered in the Cyprus Parliament, Sargsyan also
condemned continuing Turkish occupation of a big chunk of the island
and unequivocally endorsed its Greek-dominated government’s position
on the unresolved conflict.

“With its contradictory posture, inconsistent statements and groundless
manipulation of the [Turkish-Armenian normalization] process, Turkey
destroyed it,” he said. “Turkey backed away from its commitments and
not only failed to ratify the signed protocols but also reverted to
its old positions adopted before the process.”

Sargsyan denounced the current Turkish government’s assertive foreign
policy as “neo-Ottoman” imperialist designs aimed at forcing Turkey’s
neighbors into submission. “What had the Ottoman Empire given the
peoples under its yoke apart from massacres, tyranny and plunder?” he
said.

“A country that has kept the border with Armenia closed since its
independence under different pretexts and has been blackmailing my
people can not aspire to regional leadership,” he declared.

The unusually scathing remarks reflected Sargsyan’s frustration
with Turkey’s refusal to unconditionally ratify the Turkish-Armenian
protocols envisaging the establishment of diplomatic relations between
the two neighboring states and the opening of their border. Ankara
has made that contingent on a resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict acceptable to Azerbaijan.

Addressing Greek-Cypriot lawmakers, Sargsyan said that Yerevan has
never set any preconditions for normalizing Turkish-Armenian relations
despite having “more than sufficient moral and legal grounds” to do
that. He singled out successive Armenian governments’ readiness to
improve bilateral ties without Turkish recognition of the World War
One-era massacres in the Ottoman Empire as genocide.

The Armenian leader emphasized the fact that the Cypriot Parliament was
one of the first legislatures to pass in 1982 a resolution recognizing
the genocide. He went to express his country’s solidarity with the
Greek Cypriots in their decades-long conflict with the Turks.

“Armenia has never accepted and will never accept any attempt to
partition brotherly Cyprus,” Sargsyan declared. “We have never come
and will never come to terms with the occupation of this friendly
country’s north.”

“Armenians and Cypriots are not only friends and brothers but also
natural allies, and we are faithful to that alliance,” he said.

A joint declaration issued with Cyprus President Demetris Christofias
after their talks in Nicosia, Sargsyan likewise hailed the Greek
Cypriots’ “creative approach” to the conflict’s resolution and faulted
Turkey for “not duly responding to these steps.” Official Nicosia,
for its part, praised Armenia’s “constructive efforts” to settle the
Karabakh conflict.

Simon Aynedjian – Gibrahayer e-magazine Thursday 13 January 2011 –
The much anticipated and historic visit of Armenian President Serzh
Sargsyan to Cyprus became reality on Monday 17 January 2011. During
his visit President Serzh Sargsyan met President Demetris Christofias
at the Presidential Palace. He later met Archbishop Chrysostomos.

These two meetings were followed by the opening of the Armenia-Cyprus

performed for the President and his entourage.

Nareg school’s Hokapartsoutiun Chairman Vartan Tashdjian welcomed the
President and his entourage, while Principal Vera Tahmazian presented
the President with a commemorative gift. Visibly moved, President
Sargsyan rushed to the microphone and addressed pupils, teachers,
parents, and Gibrahay community members, who had packed Nareg Hall.

Accompanied by Armenian MP Vartkes Mahdessian, Sargsyan later met
Archbishop Hergelian and members of Temagan and Varchagan bodies at

Wikileaks Given Data On Swiss Bank Accounts

WIKILEAKS GIVEN DATA ON SWISS BANK ACCOUNTS

AZG DAILY
20-01-2011

A former Swiss banker has passed on data containing account details
of 2,000 prominent people to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

The data – which is not yet available on the Wikileaks website – was
held on two discs handed over by Rudolf Elmer at a press conference
in London.

Mr Assange promised full disclosure once the information had been
vetted, BBC reported.

Mr Elmer is scheduled to go on trial in Switzerland on Wednesday for
breaking bank secrecy laws.

The banker, who has given data to Wikileaks before, was fired from
Swiss bank Julius Baer in 2002.

Although it was not confirmed what activities might be covered by the
data Mr Elmer has passed on, the Wikileaks head noted that previous
data from Julius Baer provided by Mr Elmer had shed light on tax
evasion, the hiding of proceeds of criminal acts and “the protection
of assets of those about to fall out of political favour”.

The data covers multinationals, financial firms and wealthy individuals
from many countries, including the UK, US and Germany, and covers the
period 1990-2009, according to a report in Swiss newspaper Der Sonntag.

“Once we have looked at the data… there will be full revelation,”
said Mr Assange, who is currently on bail and confined to the UK due
to an extradition request from Sweden.

The Wikileaks founder has been accused of sexual misconduct by two
women in Sweden, including having unprotected sex without consent –
accusations he denies.

Speaking at the handover event at the Frontline Club, he said the
data would be vetted before publication.

It was difficult to say how long this would take, he said, although
he suggested it could be as little as two weeks.

The vetting would depend on the volume of information and how it was
delegated, Mr Assange said.

Other groups – such as the Tax Justice Network or financial media
outlets – might be asked to help in the vetting process, he added.

Mr Assange also said some information was likely to be handed over
to the authorities – mentioning specifically the UK’s Serious Fraud
Office – as was the case with a previous leak concerning Icelandic
banks, the source reported.

Hrant Dink : L’Etat Turc Est L’Assassin

HRANT DINK : L’ETAT TURC EST L’ASSASSIN

Source/Lien : Hayat oldugu gibi
19-01-2011

Info Collectif VAN – – Hrant Dink, journaliste

tacite de silence se met a l’Å”uvre lorsqu’il s’agit d’un Arménien ;

[Nota CVAN : Ogun Samast a pris
