Samantha Power to be the next Secretary of State?

Samantha Power to be the next Secretary of State?
Irish-born adviser now key to Obama foreign policy

By CATHY HAYES , IrishCentral.com Staff Writer
Published Saturday, April 2, 2011, 7:21 AM

A flattering New York Times profile has increased speculation that
Samantha Power, the Dublin-born aide to President Obama, could be his
next Secretary of State or National Security Adviser.

She has been the main architect, along with Hillary Clinton, of the
Libya policy and has an increasing influence in the White House inner
circle.

No Irish-born person in recent history has had such influence on a
president. Power, now 40, moved to the US from Ireland at age 10.

With Hillary Clinton due to step down after Obama’s first term, she
would be a live candidate to succeed her if Obama wins re-election.

The Times reported that on Monday night last, Samantha Power took to
the podium at Columbia University in New York two hours before
President Obama was due to address the nation on Libya and received a
rock star reception.

Power, who is one of Obama’s key advisers on foreign policy, insisted
that Libya was not going to be the main topic of conversation.

`I’m not going to talk much about Libya,’ she said, as quoted in The Times.

However, when later questioned she defended the administration’s
decision in establishing a no-fly zone, adding failure to do so would
have been `extremely chilling, deadly and indeed a stain on our
collective conscience.’

Since she began her career working as a war correspondant in Bosnia at
the tender age of 22, Power has believed that nations have a moral
obligation to prevent genocide. She can bring life to these ideals
from her position of the National Security Council.

`She is clearly the foremost voice for human rights within the White
House,’ Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch, told
the New York Times `and she has Obama’s ear.’

Power won a Pulitzer Prize for her 2002 book on genocide, entitled `A
Problem from Hell,’ which examined the U.S. foreign policy response to
genocide.

The book argues that the Armenia, Nazi Germany, Cambodia and Rwanda
genocides occurred because of government authorities averted their
eyes and individuals made the choice not to intervene.

`The most common response,’ Ms. Power wrote, `is, `We didn’t know.’
This is not true.’

Some of her critics say that she could be pushing the U.S. into
another Iraq. The conservative blog American Thinker says that Obama
has `outsourced foreign policy’ to the Dublin woman. She has also
drawn the ire of the Israeli lobby for her pro-Palestinian positions.

Power attempts to keep a low profile after she described Hillary
Rodham Clinton as “a monster” during the 2008 presidential election
campaign. Her remarks saw her step down from her position as an
advisor on Obama’s campaign. Since then, the women have reconciled.

Obama initially headhunted Power in 2005, after reading her book.
After a long meeting, Power decided to take leave from her Harvard
professorship to work for the then senator.

Despite her efforts to remain low key, the Dublin woman has an
impressive artillery with two Ivy League degrees (Yale undergraduate,
Harvard Law).

She once posed in an evening gown for Men’s Vogue and played a game of
basketball with George Clooney. She has been described by the Daily
Beast as `the femme fatale of the humanitarian assistance world.’

Guénant Automobiles, Carrosserie Brondy, CTV, Fast Concept Car, toutes

PepsiCo plant to open in Yerevan in May
Friday 1 April 2011 13:59

Mediamax reports that the opening of the plant will take place in May,
2011. Prime Minister of Armenia Tigran Sargsian visited the
construction platform today and got familiar with the process of
works.

Business Consultant of Jermuk International Company Edgar Kazaryan
stated that the new plant will become on of the best producers of
PepsiCo in the world due to its technical equipment.

`After launch of Pepsi production, we plan to import new equipment for
producing natural juices under Pepsi brand. The volume of investments
has already made 22mln, however the cost of the entire program is
hard to forecast’, Edgar Kazaryan stated.

He noted that some types of beverages, which are not produced in
Georgia and will be exported to the neighboring country, will be
presented in the range of drinks, produced in the Armenian plant.

Two production lines for drinks in glass containers and plastic
bottles have been installed in the plant.

The company plans to create about 250 new workplaces.

Edgar Kazaryan stated that according to the assessment of the State
Committee for the Protection of Economic Competition, the share of
PepsiCo in the market of carbonized beverages in Armenia does not
exceed 10% at the moment; however the company intends to increase the
volume of Pepsi consumption in the country in a short period of time.

Within the framework of its crisis prevention program, three years ago
Armenian government provided Jermuk International privileges on VAT
payment for imported equipment (AMD 560mln).

Pirate products still sold in Armenia despite the new law
Friday 1 April 2011 15:53

Yerevan/Mediamax/. Pirate products are still sold in Armenia despite
the fact that the new law on `Compulsory labeling of magnetic audio
and video carriers with check symbols (holograms)’ came into effect on
March 1.

Mediamax reports that General Director of `Armauthor’ Copyright
Protection Public Organization Susanna Nersisyan stated today that 90%
of CD and DVD products supplied in Armenia represent pirate
production.

`There is the law, however there are no necessary mechanisms for its
application’, Nersisyan stated. According to her, the main functions
on applying the new law are on the Tax Service of Armenia, however the
necessary check symbols for the goods are not ready yet.

Susanna Nersisyan informed that for legal sale of audio and video
products, the owners of stores should acquire the corresponding
permission. `This issue is regulated by `Armauthor’, which already
possesses agreements with many local and foreign companies’, she said,
noting that no one has turned to them to receive the corresponding
permission so far.

`Javakhk’ Council does: no chance to participate in Georgia politica

Mediamax, Armenia

`Javakhk’ Council does not see a chance to participate in Georgia’s
political life
Friday 1 April 2011 14:34

Yerevan/Mediamax/. Member of `Javakhk’ Council of Organizations Artak
Gabrielyan stated today that the Armenians of Javakhk cannot
participate in elections, since they do not have a registered
political party.

While speaking to Mediamax’s correspondent he said that `we have
repeatedly turned to the authorities for registration of the founded
`Virq’ party, however the Ministry of Justice of Georgia has been
refusing to do so for various reasons’.

The recent elections to local self-governing bodies in May, 2010,
proved that we have serious problems. We tried to get nominated by
means of lists of any of the oppositional parties, also including
Irakli Alasania’s party. But he refused, saying that `we are
separatists, and if he nominates us by his lists, the authority of the
party will drop strongly’. So, I do not understand what he means
saying that Georgia needs more Armenian politicians’, Artak Gabrielyan
stated.

Leader of Georgian `Free Democrats’ party Irakli Alasania stated in an
exclusive interview to Mediamax that `Georgia needs more Armenian
politicians’.

According to Gabrielyan, `maybe nomination of Armenian politicians is
possible in Armenian communities of Tbilisi and Ajara, but it is very
difficult in Javakhk’.

Foreign and Defense Ministers of Georgia to visit Yerevan
Friday 1 April 2011 17:29

Yerevan/Mediamax/. Georgian Ambassador Tengiz Sharmanashvili presented
his credentials to the President of Armenia today.

At the meeting, Serzh Sargsian noted that Armenian-Georgian relations
are consolidated by active reciprocal visits. After the visit of the
President of Georgia to Yerevan in the beginning of the year, Armenia
was visited by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Territorial
Development and Infrastructures of Georgia.

In April, Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defense of Georgia are
expected to visit Yerevan.

`Despite our very good relations, there is great potential to
consolidate and develop bilateral relations. The task of the
Presidents of two countries and your task is to develop that
potential’, Armenian President stated.

Freeway Sign Directs Public to Montebello Armenian Genocide Monument

Freeway Sign Directs Public to Montebello Armenian Genocide Monument

By Sandra T. Molina, Writer
Published: 04/01/2011

MONTEBELLO – About 200 people gathered Friday at an unveiling ceremony
for a highway sign that local Armenians called, “historic.”

Assembly majority leader Charles Calderon, D-Montebello, uncovered the
directional sign, “Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument,” at the
Garfield/Wilcox off-ramp of the Pomona (60) Freeway.

“The sign marks the location of the only memorial in California honoring
the victims and survivors of the Armenian genocide,” Calderon said.
“It’s not just another freeway sign.”

The freeway sign installation was authorized by an act of the state
Legislature, ACR 148, which was authored by Calderon and adopted in
2010.

It authorized the California Department of Transportation to erect signs
on the 60 Freeway directing motorists to the Armenian Genocide Martyrs
Monument at Bicknell Park, 901 Via San Clemente.

The monument, under strong opposition from state and federal entities,
including the U.S. State Department, was approved by the Montebello City
Council in 1965.

It symbolized the first genocide of the 20th century and is in memory of
the 1.5 million Armenians who were systematically annihilated at the
hands of the Ottoman Turkish government from 1915 to 1923, Calderon
said.

Rev. Nareg Pehlivanian, of Holy Cross Armenian Apostolic Cathedral, said
the day was a dream come true and the sign would advance the cause of
educating people on the genocide.

“I share your joy on this historic day,” he told the crowd.

“I am feeling most triumphant today,” said Montebello Armenian Center
Chairman Nazareth Sadorian. “It’s a celebration and partial victory for
our ancestors.”

Although he warned the sign does not mean an end to the advocacy of
recognizing the genocide, it is a step forward for Armenians everywhere.

“It makes sure that the genocide is not lost in the archives, but is out
in the open,” Sadorian said.

Grigor Hovhannissian, consulate general of The Republic of Armenia in
Los Angeles, said the sign would “send shock waves” to the world, as did
the monument.

“It will probably cause some kind of shock to drivers, especially with
the words, `genocide’ and `martyrs,”‘ he said.
