CONSTITUTIVE MEETING OF THE EURONEST PARLIAMENTARY ASSEMBLY TO BE HELD ON MAY 3

The first EURONEST Parliamentary Meeting will be held in Brussels
on 3 May, bringing together MEPs with parliamentarians from five
Eastern Partner Countries. The Parliament will host legislators from
Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine to constitute the
new Assembly.

As this is the first time this body will meet, the main goal of
the constituent meeting is to adopt the rules of procedure, elect
co-presidents, the bureau and working groups, and sign the constituent
act. EP President Jerzy Buzek will address all participants and
present the speakers of the Parliaments of the Eastern Partners.

The EURONEST Parliamentary Assembly (PA) consists of 60 MEPs and
10 MPs from each of the five Eastern Partner Countries. Belarus is
a special case: although a part of the Eastern Neighbourhood, there
was much discussion about how to allow its participation in EURONEST
without giving legitimacy to Alexander Lukashenko’s regime. In the
end, next week’s meeting will be held without any representatives
from Belarus in attendance.

EURONEST’s role is to provide a parliamentary dimension to the EU’s
Eastern Partnership, part of the EU’s Neighbourhood Policy.

The Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly, Hovik Abrahamyan, will
leave for Brussels tomorrow at the invitation of the President of
the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, to participate in the EURONEST
sitting. Hovik Abrahamyan is expected to address the participants of
the sitting.

The Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly will have a meeting
with the President of the European Parliament.

PRIME MINISTER TIGRAN SARKISIAN DONATES ONE MILLION DRAMS TO FUND RAISING MARATHON

YEREVAN, May 2, /ARKA/. Armenian prime minister Tigran Sarkisian
donated last week one million Drams (about $2,700) to a fund raising
campaign organized by the Union of Writers of Armenia as part of the
second literary marathon called ‘I am a Friend of Books.’

The tele-marathon was shown by Shant TV and was also available for
Armenians across the globe through Armenian Public TV’s satellite
broadcasting.

Chairing a Cabinet session last Thursday Tigran Sarkisian urged
government members to take active part in the marathon.

“Writers asked all to take active part in this important event. I urge
heads of government departments and divisions to take active part in
it,’ he said, emphasizing the event in the context of celebrating
the 500-th anniversary of printing in Armenia to be marked in 2012
and UNESCO’s decision to declare Yerevan World Book Capital.

The results of the marathon will be announced on May 3 at a news
conference.

The first Armenian book was published by Hakob Meghapart in 1512 in
Venice, Italy. The book was called Urbatagirq, “Friday Book.” The first
Armenian printing house in Armenia was established in Etchmiadzin in
1771.

COST OF CONSUMER BASKET IN JAN.-FEB. SURGES BY 19.9% FROM PREVIOUS QUARTER

The cost of consumer basket in Armenia in the first three months of
this year surged by 19.9% from the last quarter of 2010 and stood at
62,640 Drams at the end of 2011 March, according to the fresh numbers,
released by the National Statistical Service (NSS).

According to NSS data, the cost of the minimum monthly set of foods
was 35,390 Drams, rising by 20% in January-March 2011 from the
previous quarter.

The consumer basket includes bread (the monthly cost of bread necessary
for one individual is 5,381 Drams), meat (7,211 Drams), potato (2,265
Drams), fruits (7,627 Drams), sugar (552 Drams), dairy products (5,703
Drams), eggs (917 Drams), vegetable oil (499 Drams), fish (2000 Drams),
margarine (301 Drams) and other foods. ($1-370.27 Drams).

DIASPORA MINISTER RE-ELECTED CHAIR OF FOUNDATION BOARD

Diaspora Minister Hranush Hakobyan has been re-elected as chairperson
of the One Nation, One Culture Foundation’s Board of Trustees, the
ministry’s press service told Tert.am.

This comes after the foundation’s former executive director, Tamar
Poghosyan, was dismissed amid a scandal over abusing authority.

The foundation’s board has decided to issue a strict reprimand to
Poghosyan and ask the Control Chamber to launch inspections at the
foundation.

The decision was made based on a written notice from the Controls
Service of the prime minister.

“Considering the facts in the document, the Board of Trustees of the
One Nation, One Culture Foundation has decided that the foundation has
not fully met its charter requirements, and its Executive Director
Tamar Poghosyan abused authority, violating the Law on Foundation
and failing to implement the board of trustees’ decision in a timely
manner,” reads the statement.

The board of trustees has also made a decision to amend the
foundation’s charter.
