On May 8, Azerbaijani Wahhabis will honor Osama bin Laden in a park of Baku.

The killing of the leader of Al-Qaeda international terrorist
organization has caused different reactions worldwide, according to
arannews.ir.

It went on saying: `Some political circles are pleased with the news,
but others expressed concern over it.’

Osama bin Laden – the longtime leader of al Qaeda – was reported to be
killed by U.S. forces in a mansion outside the Pakistani capital of
Islamabad.

US troops were led to Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden by his own
deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri, because of a simmering internal power
struggle, Al-Watan Saudi newspaper said on May 5.

The newspaper, quoting an unnamed `regional source,’ said the top two
Al-Qaeda men had differences and that a courier who led US forces to
bin Laden was working for Zawahiri.

The courier was a Pakistan national and not a Kuwaiti as the US
suspected. The man knew he was being followed by the US military but
disguised the fact.

`The Egyptian faction of Al-Qaeda is defacto running the organization
now and since he was taken ill in 2004 they have been trying to take
full control,’ according to the paper.

It said Zawahiri’s faction had persuaded bin Laden to leave tribal
areas along the Afghan-Pakistan border and take shelter instead in
Abbottabad near Islamabad where he was finally killed by US commandos.

With the return of an Egyptian figure in Al-Qaeda, Saif al-Adel, last
autumn from Iran, the Egyptian faction had hatched a plan to dispose
of Saudi-born bin Laden, AFP reported.

Editorial published in the Armenian Weekly’s April 2009 Magazine

I can’t stop looking at Mujgan Arpat’s photographs of doors and
windows of old Armenian houses in Diyarbekir (p. 30 of April 2009
magazine). They seem to have the immediacy of a Komitas song, a Daniel
Varoujan poem, a page from Krikor Zohrab’s stories.

The door of an Armenian house in Hancepek, Diyarbekir (Photo: Mujgan Arpat)
I feel a deep desire to knock on them.

And perhaps one day I will. But at the moment, dear reader, this
magazine you are holding in your hands is another way of knocking on
those doors.

* * *

In April 2007, at one of my lectures, I heard the story of an Armenian
Genocide survivor in Boston. When asked about her family’s experiences
in 1915, she would talk about them, then she would laugh after
speaking a sentence or two. Then she would apologize for laughing and
continue her story. By the time she had finished, she had laughed and
apologized several times. In the end, she said, `I am really sorry.
But I have no tears anymore.’

A few days later, I gave a talk in New York about the legacy of Hrant
Dink. After my talk, I was chatting with some members of the audience
when a young woman approached me and introduced herself. She was a
Turkish student doing her Ph.D. in New York.We asked her to join our
discussion. A short time later, when a slideshow about Hrant Dink was
being shown, I saw tears running down her cheeks.

`What is your story?’ I asked her.

`I don’t have a story,’ she said. `I did not know anything about Hrant
or about 1915 before his assassination. Now I read all I can find on
the Armenian Genocide.’

As she was saying those words, I felt that somewhere, on a certain
plane of consciousness, the laughter of the genocide survivor and the
tears of the Turkish woman had met.

The scholars and commentators who have contributed to this magazine
also have a meeting point: They are all knocking on the same door. A
door that has the immediacy of a Komitas song, a Daniel Varoujan poem,
a page from Krikor Zohrab’s stories. And a door that, one day, will
inevitably open.

CRANSTON, R.I. – On Friday evening, April 15, for the third year, the
Honorable Mayor Allan Fung hosted the raising of the Armenian flag at
Cranston City Hall in memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide.

hearts of all present with her angelic voice singing the national

many different committees and organizations over the years. She and
her husband are great examples of the Armenian spirit. They are the
children of survivors and went on to make major contributions to the
Rhode Island Armenian community. Varkis Markarian served as a member
and chairman of the church’s Board of Trustees and as a delegate to
the National Religious Assembly representing the church. Varkis was,
and Lillian remains, a huge supporter of the church and the
organizations.

Dignitaries who attended and shared words of encouragement and hope
were U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian,
House Leader Nicholas Mattiello, and former Cranston City Council
Chairman Aram Garabedian. Also in attendance was Honorable Chief Judge

along with Pjojian, as Markarian raised the flag at the conclusion of
the event.

Aznavour to Be Honored in New York City

Esteemed and respected musicians, artists, and community leaders from
across the globe will gather to pay tribute to one of the world’s
greatest musicians and entertainers, Charles Aznavour, in a
star-studded event to take place at the exquisite Cipriani Wall Street
on Friday evening, May 20.

Charles Aznavour
The evening will serve as an opportunity to highlight not only
Aznavour’s talents but his decades-long service to Armenia on the eve
of the republic’s 20th anniversary of regaining its independence.

Presenting the award to Aznavour will be the famous actress and singer
Liza Minnelli, whose friendship with him dates back almost 50 years.
Seeing Aznavour perform on stage for the first time was `magnetic’ for
Minnelli. `The minute he walked onstage, I stopped breathing,’ she
said.

One of Aznavour’s greatest strengths, she continued, is his ability to
tell stories through his music. Following his performance, Minnelli
realized she wanted to be a storyteller like Aznavour, and when she
asked him to be her mentor, he agreed.

`I never did a show without showing it to him first. Ever,’ she said.

Minnelli noted how important Aznavour’s Armenian heritage was for him.
`People would say he is a Frenchman, but he would say, `No, I am
Armenian,” she said. `There was such pride in that.’

Minnelli spoke of Aznavour’s dedication and commitment to Armenia,
especially his efforts during the 1988 earthquake, which took the
lives of 50,000 Armenians. `He put all his passion, time, and
stubbornness into helping Armenia, and it was spectacular,’ she said.

Another world-famous singer who was affected by Aznavour’s music is
Celine Dion, who was introduced to his work by her mother when she was
a young girl. `It was an honor and a grand privilege for me to sing
with him,’ said Dion, recalling how she performed with him years
later. `Not only is he one of the biggest stars in the history of
France, but he’s also a very kind and gentle person.’

Featured alongside Aznavour in Atom Egoyan’s 2002 film `Ararat,’ actor
and playwright Eric Bogosian commends him for the attention he has
brought to Armenia and to the Armenian Genocide.

`He is one of the most brilliantly focused individuals,’ said
Bogosian, who will serve as master of ceremonies for the gala. `And he
has been a gift to people around the world.’

As a young student in Beirut, Lebanon, Vartan Gregorian, the president
of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, fondly recalls listening to
Aznavour, describing him as an `artist with a social conscience.’

Gregorian noted Aznavour’s success in rising to international stardom
without forgetting his roots. `He is the embodiment of the best we can
have for the world,’ said Gregorian. `He symbolized, for me, that the
unique – the Armenian – can be universal without dissolving itself.’

As a representative of the Armenian government, UN Ambassador Garen
Nazarian cited Aznavour as a `tireless advocate’ for Armenia and
worldwide recognition of the Armenian Genocide. He described
Aznavour’s service to Armenia as `truly commendable.’

`For me personally, his image of an exceptional artist and great
Armenian is inspirational and empowering,’ said Nazarian.

The Fund for Armenian Relief (FAR) will honor Charles Aznavour for his
dedication, service, and efforts in Armenia on May 20 at Cipriani Wall
Street, 55 Wall Street, New York. The reception will begin at 7 p.m.,
with the dinner and program beginning at 8 p.m. Proceeds will benefit
programs for the elderly in Armenia. For more information or tickets,
visit or call (212) 889-5150.

The Honorary Committee for FAR’s Charles Aznavour Tribute includes
Liza Minnelli, Tony Bennett, Celine Dion, Placido Domingo, Atom
Egoyan, Arsinee Khanjian, Sir Elton John, David Furnish, Michael
Bloomberg (mayor of New York City), Charles E. Schumer (U.S. Senator),
Eduard Nalbandian (minister of foreign affairs of Armenia), Gerard
Araud (ambassador, permanent representative of French Republic to UN),
Francois Delattre (ambassador of French Republic to the U.S.), Edward
Djerejian, Tatoul Markarian (ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to
the U.S.), Garen Nazarian, Vartan Gregorian, Clive Gillinson
(executive and artistic director, Carnegie Hall), Reynold Levy
(president, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts), Joseph Polisi
(president, Juilliard School), James Wolfensohn (president emeritus,
the World Bank), Archbishop Khajag Barsamian (primate of the Diocese
of the Armenian Church of America, Eastern), Archbishop Demetrios
(primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in America), Archbishop Timothy
Dolan (archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York),
Rabbi Arthur Schneier (president of the Appeal of Conscience
Foundation), and Bishop Mark Sisk (bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of
New York).

Relations between the authorities and the opposition form a new

Relations between the authorities and the opposition form a new
political reality
05.05.2011 17:38

Lusine Vasilyan
`Radiolur’

Former member of the Political Bureau of the `Republic’ Party,
political scientist Suren Surenyans says the relations between the
authorities and the opposition form a new political reality. The
parties are taking steps to meet each other, but this does not
comprise a deal, not yet a dialogue, he said.

According to him, the authorities and the Armenian National congress
have considerably softened their positions and have decided to
substitute contradiction with competition.

`The authorities have come to understand that they will not be able to
neutralize Levon Ter-Petrosyan and his team at the forthcoming
elections, and the opposition has realized that its demand for snap
elections is unreal,’ Surenyants says.

According to the analysts, it’s the idea of dialogue that excludes the
possibility of snap elections.
`The parties will actually be trying to come to an agreement regarding
the elections and thus discharge the political situation,’ political
scientist Yervand Bozoyan said.

Surenyants is confident that the parties will not lose their
electorate as a result of change of behavior. According to his
assessment, in case the dialogue fails, the parties will return to the
point they have started from.
