ISTANBUL – Hürriyet Daily News

Turkey’s state-run television channel has produced a documentary on
the life of diaspora Armenians in Argentina and France. The big-budget
film, ‘DostluÄ?u Hatırlamak’ (Remembering Friendship) does not feature
historical problems between Turks and Armenians. ‘Outside of politics,
I convey the longings of ordinary people,’ says director Sevinç
YeÅ?iltaÅ?

Sevinç YeÅ?iltaÅ? speaks about her documentary ‘DostluÄ?u Hatırlamak.’

A new, big-budget documentary on the life of diaspora Armenians will
debut this weekend on the state-run Turkish Radio and Television, or
TRT, which provided funding for the film.

Shot over a year in Armenian communities in Buenos Aires and in
Valance, France, `DostluÄ?u Hatırlamak’ (Remembering Friendship)
reflects director Sevinç YeÅ?iltaÅ?’s desire to tell a different story
about Armenians.

`Before making the film, I watched all documentaries featuring the
historical problems in the TRT archive. I wanted my production to tell
the human story, not the historical one,’ YeÅ?iltaÅ? told the Hürriyet
Daily News & Economic Review.

`In order to talk about historical problems, I need to be a historian
and I am not. I wanted to tell the story of ordinary people, outside
of politics,’ she said.

YeÅ?iltaÅ? was able to film scenes in Buenos Aires thanks to her
personal connections, but found it too difficult to gain access to
Armenian communities in Aleppo and Beirut. `I was told those
[Armenians] in Aleppo and Beirut had harsher attitudes toward Turkey.
I gave up trying to film there as I was not able to find necessary
connections,’ she said.

Ordinary people’s longing for their land

The wife of a priest the director met in Valance was from the
Southeast Anatolian province of Å?anlıurfa, YeÅ?iltaÅ? said. `They wanted
to give me a family heirloom needlepoint as a gift. I told them I
couldn’t accept it but they insisted. They held me and cried,’ she
said.

During the filming process, YeÅ?iltaÅ? said, she realized during how
much Turks and Armenians resembled one another.

`As Turkish people, we see the diaspora as a whole, as different from
us, but the worries of ordinary [Armenian] people are the same as
ours,’ she said. `These people living thousands of kilometers away
from us speak Turkish and sing Turkish songs. They miss the land where
they were born. I saw how much we resembled each other.’

Noting that the Anatolian traditions continued in both Buenos Aires
and Valance, YeÅ?iltaÅ? added: `As a professional documentary maker, I
could not believe how [emotionally] affected I was while making this
film.’

Following the filming, it took YeÅ?iltaÅ? six months to complete the
documentary, which she said was quickly approved by TRT.

`There was no reason [for them] to reject it. TRT asked me to make a
documentary on Armenians. I would not have made it if there were
restrictions on what I could film,’ she said.

`I told a human story, not a political one. My friends sometimes asked
me if I hesitated to make a documentary on such a political issue but
I thought that there was no reason to hesitate. I filmed the longings
of ordinary people with the opportunity TRT provided for me,’ YeÅ?iltaÅ?
added.

`It is such a sensitive issue that you need to tell it in the most
accurate and simplest way. This will remove hostility and open the way
for dialogue,’ she said.

The documentary is made up of two parts, each 70 minutes long. In
addition to the showings on TRT, it will be screened at domestic and
international festivals.

Turkey’s pressure on European agencies rather strong, oppositional MP says

May 05, 2011 | 02:54

YEREVAN. – Turkey’s pressure on European agencies is rather strong,
head of `Heritage’ parliamentary group Stepan Safaryan told Armenian
News-NEWS.am, commenting on the decision by the French senate to
reject the bill criminalizing the Armenian Genocide.

The MP recalled that France recognized the Armenian Genocide and the
current vote will not have an emotional impact either on the French or
the Armenian side. He stressed that the voting results were not
expected with bated breath. For this reason, the MP did not see any
problems. `But if France had major problems with Turkey, voting
results might have been different,’ Safaryan noted.

As Armenian News-NEWS.am reported earlier, French Senate rejected the
bill penalizing denial of the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Empire with
196 votes `against’ and 74 `for’.

Hratch Varjabedian: French Senate bowed to Turkish government pressure

The Upper House of French Parliament has failed late Wednesday to
approve a bill making the denial of the Armenian Genocide under
Ottoman-era a crime.

On the eve of voting Senate legislative committee appeared with
disapproving position urging to remove the bill from the voting. The
full chamber then voted by 196 to 74 to block a formal debate on the
issue.

The voting has been followed by protest actions organized in front of
the Senate building by the representatives of the Armenian community.

`It’s clear that the French Senate bowed to Turkish government
pressure and simply found an excuse not to adopt this law,’ Hratch
Varjabedian, one of the organizers of the demonstration, told RFE/RL’s
Armenian service from the scene.

Armenian Ambassador to Switzerland, renowned chansonnier Charles
Aznavour has been following all the discussions in the Senate.

The bill drafted by lawmakers from the main opposition Socialist Party
was adopted by the French lower house, the National Assembly, in 2006
amid vehement protests from the Turkish government. It needs to be
also passed by the French Senate in order to become a law.

The influential French-Armenian community has for years been trying to
push it through the Senate dominated by supporters President Nicolas
Sarkozy. The effort has faced tacit resistance from the French
government.

Armenian ruling MP expresses regret over French Senate decision

May 05, 2011 | 00:49

YEREVAN. Secretary of Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) Eduard
Sharmazanov expressed regret over the decision by the French Senate to
reject the bill criminalizing the Armenian Genocide under Ottoman
Empire in 1915.

`As a citizen and RPA member I regret that the French Senate rejected
the bill. However, the day will come when all countries, not only the
European Union, but the former CIS states, the world will adopt
similar bills, following Switzerland’s lead,’ Sharmazanov told
Armenian News-NEWS.am.

`The EU should serve an example on the issue, as European values
strongly condemn such crimes against humanity. We will step up efforts
to achieve success,’ he noted.

French Senate rejected the bill penalizing denial of the Armenian
Genocide in Ottoman Empire with 196 votes `against’ and 74 `for’.

On October 12, 2006, the French National Assembly approved a bill
penalizing denial of the Armenian Genocide. The bill needed the
Senate’s consideration to be enforced.

Denial of the Armenian Genocide is considered a crime in Switzerland.
Presently the issue is on the agenda of several EU states.

Turkey to protect Armenian ruins

In the World:
Turkey to protect Armenian ruins

ANKARA, Turkey – Turkey has launched a project to conserve two ancient
ethnic Armenian ruins, a cathedral and a church, in what is seen as a
new gesture of reconciliation toward its neighbor.

Turkey and Armenia have been locked in a bitter dispute for decades
over the mass killings of ethnic Armenians in Turkey during the last
years of the Ottoman Empire. Efforts to normalize relations have been
set back by a conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over control of
the enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan and Turkey are Muslim
allies.

Culture Minister Ertugrul Gunay said Tuesday the project, in
partnership with the New York-based World Monuments Fund, would
conserve the remains of the Ani Cathedral and the Church of the Holy
Savior in Ani in eastern Turkey.

According to the fund, Ani – “one of the world’s great cities in the
10th century” – was once the site of hundreds of religious buildings
and palaces. It stands abandoned, and the remnants of its celebrated
buildings are in a precarious state.

Armenia accuses Azerbaijan of war preparations

Armenia accuses Azerbaijan of war preparations

Karabakh | 05.05.11 | 13:37

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan has accused Azerbaijan of stymieing
the current peace talks on Karabakh and seeking an occasion for fresh
aggression against the de-facto independent republic.

`Unfortunately, Azerbaijan continues to escalate the situation with
its repetitive statements that are below any standards of civilized
dialogue and seriously undermine the negotiating process,’ Sargsyan
said on Wednesday after talks with his visiting Lithuanian counterpart
in Yerevan.

`Azerbaijan has chosen the policy of dragging out the process as its
tactics and, in essence, it is waiting for an opportune moment to
start a new military adventure,’ he charged.

Still, Sargsyan emphasized the Armenian side sees the settlement of
the Karabakh conflict only by peaceful means.

Sargsyan’s statement came only days after more deadly shootings in
Karabakh, leaving three Armenian soldiers dead and one wounded. The
military and diplomats in both Armenia and Karabakh strongly condemned
Azerbaijan’s violating the terms of the 1994 ceasefire agreement.

The rising death toll blamed on Azeri sniper activity has led to some
politicians in Yerevan even calling for `an adequate response’ amid
fears among observers that the escalation of tensions in Karabakh may
lead to a full-blown war in the volatile region.

Azerbaijan’s attempt to regain control of Karabakh after the latter
declared its independence during the late days of the disintegrating
Soviet Union resulted in a three-year war in which some 30,000 people
were killed and hundreds of thousands were displaced. Baku eventually
lost sovereignty over the territory of Karabakh proper and was also
ousted from several districts surrounding the Armenian enclave that
could be used as grounds for future aggression.

Armenian society distrusts dialogue between authorities and HAK

Armenian society distrusts in dialogue between authorities and
Armenian National Congress, political expert thinks

arminfo
Thursday, May 5, 20:43

By relying on the potential of the society only for resolving their
own tasks at the same time the political elite of Armenia is more and
more moving away from
the society, director of the Armenian Center for National and
International Studies, Manvel Sarkisyan, said at today’s round table.

He think that the “elite” is not only the ruling top of Armenia but
also the leadership of all the political parties including the
opposition ones. “The uncertainty of the political life was caused by
no dialogue between the authorities and Armenian National Congress.
Sensible people may ask what is hidden under rapprochement of the
above mentioned forces. They do not trust in any of them. The point is
that the authoritarianism peculiar to the leadership of Armenia is
also available within the Armenian National Congress in a more sharp
form. And it is very much important that many supporters of the
“radical opposition” have started understanding this’, – Sarkisyan
said. Moreover, if a principle of bargain has been acting within the
power elite, with a help of which functions and authorities are
distributed, the full “power vertical” exists within the Armenian
National Congress.

Nevertheless, the expert is optimistic for the fact that the
electorate has started putting forward demands to the opposition and
expressing displeasure in case of their non-fulfillment. This is
evidence of maturity of the society, which opens the door to formation
of the practice of the normal elections, he said.
