President Grybauskaite: Lithuania Ready To Make Investments In Armenia

YEREVAN, May 4. /ARKA/. Lithuania is ready to make investments in
Armenia, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite said Wednesday in
Yerevan at a joint briefing with her Armenian counterpart Serzh
Sargsyan.

She gave a high mark to political relations between the two countries
saying that economic ties still have room for development.

The Lithuanian president said that both countries declared their
independence at the same time.

She said that the two countries have plenty in common though the ways
the countries have passed over 20 years of independence differ from
each other.

Serzh Sargsyan, in return, said that after declaration of independence
the two countries’ relations developed dynamically.

`Armenia views Lithuania as friendly country and reliable partner,’ he
said adding that ties between the two countries are becoming closer
from year to year.

The countries are expanding their relationship finding new grounds for
cooperation.

Sargsyan said that a wide range of issues has been discussed at the meeting.

He also thanked Grybauskaite for a unanimous recognition of the fact
of Armenian Genocide by the Lithuanian Parliament.

He said that Lithuanians reacted to a massacre in Ottoman Empire in
the end of 19 century by publishing articles about Armenian history
and culture and stressing similarity of Armenian and Lithuanian
nations’ fates.

Taking into account the common historical past, Sargsyan stressed the
importance of usage of Lithuania’s experience in state-building
process and European integration.

`I pointed out cooperation among Balkan countries as a successful
model and voiced regret at not being able to use this experience in
our region, since Azerbaijan keeps widening the gap it creates, the
gap that seems so alien in 21 century,’ he said.

Lithuania’s chairmanship in OSCE was discussed as well.

The Armenian president also expressed appreciation of Lithuanian
leadership’s efforts to settle Karabakh conflict by peaceful means.

Grybauskaite arrived in Yerevan on Wednesday after touring Georgia and
Azerbaijan. –0–

Misir Mardanov aware of danger weapons in schools may pose to young

May 4, 2011 – 19:52 AMT
PanARMENIAN.Net –

Azerbaijani Education Minister Misir Mardanov opposes distributing
weapons to secondary schools.

“We observed the bitter results of this during the events (a grenade
blasted in secondary school in 1999) in Sumgait,” Mardanov told
journalists on Wednesday, May 4. The military training subject is
conducted theoretically in secondary schools, Mardanov said. There are
a sufficient number of military schools and academies. So we can not
transform secondary schools into the military,” he said.

The ban on providing secondary schools with weapons prevents holding
`high-quality lessons on basic military training’ in Azerbaijan,
Deputy Education Minister of Azerbaijan Elmar Gasimov said at a public
debate on development of the State Program on Azerbaijani Youth in
2011-2015. “It is banned to provide schools with weapons for practice
in accordance with the Defense Ministry’s special order. The ban must
be lifted. Schools must be provided with weapons,” he said.

Earlier Baku took certain actions to train school students as snipers.
Specifically, snipers’ courses were established under Azerbaijan’s
Voluntary Military Patriotism Technical Sport Society. During these
courses, the Azerbaijani youth will study technical indicators of
snipers, hand-to-hand fighting. Sniper rifles and fitness machines
have already been purchased from Russia for use in the courses.

Similar programs are in accordance with the continuous threats of the
Azerbaijani leadership on war resumption in Karabakh and huge volume
of arms purchased by that country. Probably, having conceived the fact
that weapons themselves will bring no use, Baku decided to bring up a
generation of young soldiers, exploiting the hatred towards Armenians
instilled in these young people. The Azerbaijani children are destined
to become cannon fodder, which can be used for a `great idea.’

However, the Education Minister is well aware of the threats of his
subordinate’s initiative: the young kamikazes might annihilate each
other from weapons distributed at schools, not even making it to a
supposed war.

PanARMENIAN.Net –

A police officer was shot dead and two others injured by unidentified
assailants on Wednesday, May 4 in the northern province of Kastamonu,
where Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had been speaking earlier in
the day.

Erdogan, who addressed his supporters in Kastamonu as part of election
campaigning, left Kastamonu for Amasya in a helicopter briefly before
the attack took place. Sources from the Prime Ministry told the CNN
Turk TV channel that one police officer had been killed and two others
injured during a brief firefight between an armed group and police
officers.

One police cruiser was also set ablaze. Special security teams were
dispatched to the scene and police cordoned off the area. Many
ambulances were sent to the area, the broadcaster said. No further
details were immediately available.

Addressing his supporters in Amasya, Erdogan said terrorists who
thought they couldn’t solve their problems at the ballot box think
they will get results through armed attacks. The prime minister said
his party will not allow the division of Turkey and that it is doing
everything it can to avert a confrontation among Turkey’s population
of 74 million.

Observers say Erdogan’s comments implied that the outlawed Kurdistan
Workers’ Party (PKK) had orchestrated the attack, Today’s Zaman
reported.

Close associate of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and of his chief of staff,
Esfandiar Rahim Mashai has been arrested by Iranian authorities.

The arrest of Hojjatoleslam Abbas Amirifar, who heads the president’s
Cultural Council, was confirmed by a number of Iranian websites,
including Khabar-on-line and Jahan News as well as the Campaign for
Human rights in Iran.

The Campaign cites `an informed source’ saying that Revolutionary
Guards officials arrested Amirifar on Sunday.

He was reportedly summoned to the prosecutor’s office by phone. He had
dismissed the call because a summons has to be delivered in writing.
So yesterday the officials arrested him at his home.

Amirifar’s arrest comes on the heels of Ahmadinejad’s return to
cabinet meetings, following his nine-day boycott of official duties.
The boycott began when the Supreme Leader overruled the president’s
decision to accept the resignation of his intelligence minister,
insideofiran.org reported.

Turkey renovates Armenian monuments as gesture

Turkey renovates Armenian monuments as gesture
(AP)
04 May 2011

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) – Turkey has launched a project to conserve an
ancient Armenian cathedral and a church in what is seen as a gesture
of reconciliation toward its neighbor.

Turkey and Armenia have been locked in a bitter dispute for decades
over the mass killings of Armenians in Turkey in the last years of the
Ottoman Empire. Efforts to normalize relations have been dealt a
setback by the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the
enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan is a close Muslim ally of
Turkey.

Turkey, however, says it is committed to improving ties with Armenia,
and has already restored the 10th century Akdamar church, perched on a
rocky island in Lake Van in eastern Turkey. It has also allowed
once-yearly worship at the site as a gesture to Armenia and its own
ethnic Armenian minority.

Culture Minister Ertugrul Gunay said Tuesday the new project was being
launched in partnership with the World Monuments Fund to conserve the
remains of the cathedral and the Church of the Holy Savior in Ani, 25
miles (40 kilometers) from the eastern Turkish city of Kars.

According to the New York-based World Monuments Fund, Ani – “one of
the world’s great cities in the 10th century” – was once the site of
hundreds of religious buildings, palaces, fortifications, and other
structures. Today it stands abandoned, and the remnants of its
celebrated buildings are in a precarious state.

The site, in an earthquake-prone area, has been listed on the World
Monuments Watch since 1996.

“Ani, which is of global significance, presents particularly
complicated challenges,” Gunay said. “We hope that giving new life to
the remains of once-splendid buildings, such as the Ani Cathedral and
church, will bring new economic opportunities to the region.”

The Turkish government recently completed restoration of the Church of
Tigran Honents’ and the Mosque of Manucehr, converted from a church by
invading Seljuk Turks at Ani, which is situated right on the
Turkish-Armenian border.

The area was long off-limits in a militarized area, which has been
gradually demilitarized since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Today,
it attracts tourists from around the world.

The new conservation work will primarily aim to strengthen the Ani
Cathedral and the Church of the Holy Savior against temblors, said
Bonnie Burnham, the president of WMF.

The cathedral, designed by Trdat – the chief architect of the
Bagratuni kings of Armenia who rebuilt the dome of Istanbul’s huge
Hagia Sophia church following an earthquake in the late 10th century –
is considered to be a masterpiece of medieval Armenian architecture,
the fund says. Earthquakes, however, have completely collapsed the
building’s central dome as well as its northwest corner.

Like the cathedral, the church also suffered severe quake damage and a
1930 lightning strike collapsed the southeast side of the building,
Burnham said in a statement.

“There has long been international concern about the fragile condition
of the many extraordinary ruins at Ani,” said Burnham. “We hope that
this work will usher in a new era in the life of this important site.”

According to the fund, Ani reached its cultural golden age in the
second half of the 10th century, when it became the political and
commercial center of the Bagratid Armenian kingdom. At its height, its
population exceeded 100,000 people, the fund said. By the mid-11th
century, the city began to decline due to internal strife, earthquakes
and invasions by various groups, including Seljuk Turks.

The culture minister did not say whether Turkey would also allow
prayers at Ani once the restoration is complete. The ministry on
Wednesday would not reveal the estimated cost of the project, which is
also supported by the U.S. Department of State’s Ambassadors Fund as
well as the WMF.

Osman Kavala, head of the Anadolu Kultur, a non-governmental culture
organization that helps coordinate the partnership with the WMF, said
preparations for the actual restoration work are expected to cost US$1
million (euro672,000) alone. He said the restoration is likely to
start as early as 2012 and is expected to take four years.

“This project is significant to protect the world’s cultural
heritage,” Kavala said Wednesday. “But being on the border, it might
also serve as a bridge to improve relations between Turkey and
Armenia.”

Armenians say up to 1.5 million Armenians were killed by Ottoman Turks
around the time of World War I, which they call the first genocide of
the 20th century. Turkey disputes this, saying the death toll has been
inflated and those killed were victims of civil war and unrest as the
Ottoman Empire collapsed.
