BAKU: Kazan shows political methods for solving NK do not work

Kazan meeting shows political methods for solving Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict do not work

Azerbaijan, Baku, July 7 / Trend T. Hajiyev /

The Kazan meeting has once again demonstrated that the political
methods of resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict do not work, Center
for Political Innovation and Technologies Director Mubariz Ahmadoglu
said at a press conference.

He added that the political resources of the conflict settlement have
been already exhausted. One can hope only for military resources.
Azerbaijan has every opportunities to solve problems by military
means.

“The military parade, held on June 26, once again proved it,” he added.

He said that it was planned to sign an updated document, called the
basic principles on the basis of Madrid Principles in Kazan.

“But it did not happen because of Armenia. It was clear that the Kazan
meeting was doomed to failure by Armenia. Even if Armenia signs the
document on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement, then it can
refuse from its signature. We have already seen this while signing the
protocols on the normalization of relations between Turkey and
Armenia. After the documents were signed, Armenia handed over the
documents to the Constitutional Court for consideration. The court
decided to nullify all the issues available in the protocol that were
in favor of Turkey.

So, if Armenia even signs a document on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict
settlement, it can then submit it to the Constitutional Court, which
will consider it illegal. Thus, Armenia will delay the time, he said.

He stressed that the Kazan meeting was one of the most important.
Until now, no meeting was provided with such information and political support.

Presidents Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, Dmitry Medvedev of Russia, and
Serzh Sargsyan of Armenia discussed in Kazan the basic principles of
the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement. The meeting, which was the
ninth in the last three years, ended without reaching an agreement on
the basic principles of settlement. The sides mentioned their progress
in a joint statement.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The
co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the U.S. – are
currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four
resolutions on the liberation of Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding
regions.

Disruption of Karabakh negotiations can have most negative consequences – expert
Fri 08 July 2011 06:54 GMT | 2:54 Local Time

‘Disruption of the five-year round of negotiations on peaceful
settlement of Karabakh conflict can cause the most negative
consequences’.
The remarks came from MP, political expert Rasim Musabayov while
commenting on Kazan meeting of Azerbaijani, Armenian and Russian
presidents in Kazan in June and upcoming visit of Russian Foreign
Minister Sergey Lavrov to the region.

‘In principle it is possible to anticipate what was expected from
Kazan. In Kazan it was failure to make the parties to sign the
document, but everybody understands that if this five-year negotiation
round not leads to any outcome, the consequences will be very
negative,’ the MP said.

‘That is, it will be difficult to start a new round of negotiations
after the failure, which is associated with five-year negotiations,
which means that sharp, negative military scenarios will become more
probable,’ he noted.

‘Realizing that, in general, there is only the last step left to make,
Russia, supported by Americans and Europeans, will seek some kind of
signing and getting the conflicting parties to adopt the Madrid
principles,’ Musabayov added.

Archaeology: Black Sea’s ancient coast found – report

Archaeology: Black Sea’s ancient coast found – report

Thu, Jul 07 2011
The Sofia Echo

Bulgarian scientists have found the ancient shores of the Black Sea,
currently deep beneath the waves, which they claim were the original
shores about 7500 years ago, when the Black Sea at the time was just a
fresh water lake, the Bulgarian National Television (BNT) reported on
July 7 2011.

The team, led by Professor Petko Dimitrov of the Institute of Oceanology
in Varna, which is part of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS),
returned from an expedition aboard the research vessel Akademik, saying
that they have found the ancient coastline close to the Cape of Emine.
Archaeological evidence suggest that this particular spot was part of
the ancient coastline, the BNT said.

The common theory of the creation of the Black Sea says that there was a
massive deluge through the straits of Bosporus (modern Istanbul), where
waters from the Mediterranean flooded into the lake. Once the
Mediterranean Sea breached the Bosporus Strait, it irreversibly changed
the history of the people in the area, as well as the flora and fauna.

In 1997, William Ryan and Walter Pitman published evidence that a
massive flooding of the Black Sea occurred about 5600 BCE through the
Bosporus. According to the theory, glacial melt-water had turned the
Black and Caspian Seas into vast freshwater lakes draining into the
Aegean Sea before that event. As glaciers retreated, some of the rivers
emptying into the Black Sea declined in volume and changed course to
drain into the North Sea.

The Black Sea is the world’s largest meromictic basin where the
deep waters do not mix with the upper layers of water that receive
oxygen from the atmosphere, the report said. Subsequently, more than 90
per cent of the deeper Black Sea volume is anoxic water.

Part of the Bulgarian expedition was also Professor William Ryan, a
geologist at Columbia University. “As a true scientist, until the
results are finalised, I will reserve doubts about the theory of
Professor Petko Dimitrov, that this part of the coastline was indeed
affected by the flood and that this was the ancient shoreline,” he said,
cited by the BNT.

“I am still doubtful whether there is a small gap in his theory. All my
observations support the theory, but we are still looking for any
evidence which may disprove it,” he said.

Scientists believe that if this theory proves true, they will be
presented with a myriad of other questions, such as who lived there, the
fate of the people in the area and how the region was affected in the
