Armenian Parliament Speaker Visits Johannes Lepsius House-Museum

ARMENIAN PARLIAMENT SPEAKER VISITS JOHANNES LEPSIUS HOUSE-MUSEUM

YEREVAN. – The delegation led by Armenian National Assembly (NA)
Speaker Hovik Abrahamyam, who is in Germany on a work visit, on Monday
visited the Johannes Lepsius House-Museum in Potsdam.

Abrahamyan toured the House-Museum and met with the latter’s
research staff, NA Press Service informed Armenian News-NEWS.am. The
House-Museum’s director Hans-Ulrich Schulz detailed Lepsius’ life and
activities. The German social activist, clergy, and Orientology expert
Johannes Lepsius had dealt with the Armenian Question for numerous
years,. He condemned Turkish authorities for its annihilation of the
Armenians and demanded from his country’s government to exert efforts
toward ending the Armenian massacres. Mr. Schulz presented to Armenian
NA Speaker Lepsius’ work entitled Situation of the Armenian People
in Turkey.

In his address, Hovik Abrahamyan noted that the Armenian people
remember Lepsius with gratitude because he was the first to voice
the Armenians’ mass killing in Ottoman Turkey. He expressed a hope
that the first genocide of the 20th Century would receive universal
recognition and condemnation. “We truly see Dr. Lepsius’ life as part
of history of the Armenian people of the time,” Abrahamyan noted.

In NA Speaker’s words, Armenia underscores restoring of historic
justice also between the two neighboring countries and in terms of
improving mutual trust in the region. “Turkey must follow the example
of Germany, which recognized the Holocaust as a historical reality,”
Hovik Abrahamyan stated, adding that, at the initiative of Armenia’s
President Serzh Sargsyan, an attempt was made to improve relations
between Armenia and Turkey, and without any preconditions.

The protocols on opening the borders and establishing diplomatic
relations were signed in Zurich, Switzerland. “Regrettably, Turkey was
not and is not ready today to bring this process to its logical end.

The international community knows that Armenia has always come up
with constructive initiatives,” Abrahamyan maintained.

After this meeting, the delegation led by Armenia’s Parliament Speaker
visited Cecilienhof, where the Potsdam Conference was held in 1945.

On Tuesday, Hovik Abrahamyan will meet with Norbert Lammert, President
of the German Bundestag, and, on the evening, Armenia’s parliamentary
delegation will attend a festive concert and an official reception,
at Berlin’s big concert hall, devoted to 20th anniversary of Armenia’s
independence.

TBILISI: Problems In Armenian Economy

PROBLEMS IN ARMENIAN ECONOMY

Georgia

The former head of the Bank of Armenia Bagrat Asatrian thinks that
for the last 20 years Armenia did not manage to develop successfully
economically. According to him, only certain individuals in the country
exercise the right to conduct business. Asatrian also mentioned the
poor demographic situation in the country. For the last 20 years
there has been no growth in the population of Armenia.

According to him, only 3-5% of the Armenian population is rich. The gap
between the rich and the rest of the population increases, besides the
country faces an increasing tendency for its population to emigrate.

Baku. Kamala Guliyeva – APA. “The visit of intelligentsia to Nagorno
Karabakh is not an easy issue.

The recent speeches exacerbate the situation”, Azerbaijani ambassador
to Russia Polad Bulbuloglu told journalists, APA reports.

“Armenia is a neighbor, it has a people, nation. There is an
intelligentsia among them. Of course, this conflict will be settled
one day and we will have to live together. 30000 Armenians are living
in Baku now. It means that it is possible to live together”.

Bulbuloglu said that Azerbaijani side does its best for the peaceful
settlement of the conflict: “It is needed to explain it to the opposite
side. We need to meet with creative people, intelligentsia and explain
our position. That’s why such meetings are organized.

While visiting Armenia, we try to deliver Azerbaijan’s opinion to
the Armenian community”.

The ambassador noted that such visit to Armenia is not planned in
the near future.

AZERBAIJANI FOREIGN MINISTER ELMAR MAMMADYAROV TO ADDRESS INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY AT UN GA

Azerbaijan

New York. Isabel Levine – APA. Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar
Mammadyarov will address the international community at the UN GA
General Debate today, on September 27, APA’s US correspondent reports.

Mr. Mammadyarov, who has been participating in the UN GA’s 66th
session in NYC for almost one week, has been scheduled to make his
speech at the 28th plenary meeting, which starts today morning.

Besides him, 15 more state leaders, including Foreign Ministers from
Russia Federation, Benin, Malawi and other countries will address
the Assembly.

It is expected that Mr. Mammadyarov will raise Azerbaijan’s concerns
over the Nagorno-Karabakh issue and some regional handicaps in his
speech, one Azeri official told APA’s US correspondent.

“The main focus of the speech will be the Karabakh – as the Armenian
diplomats have been strongly trying to brainwash the international
community here”, the source added.

Azerbaijan wants the international community to pay much attention
over this conflict as the county still marks its 20th anniversary of
independence with this conflict.

Mr. Mammadyarov also will talk about some regional challenges,
including Azerbaijan’s role and policy in the regional developments.

At the same time, UN Security Council will gather to discuss the
situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question
this morning.

Mammadyarov is continuing his bilateral meetings as well, during the
UN GA session.

BAKU: Armenia, Azerbaijan Should ‘Achieve Peace By Themselves’

ARMENIA, AZERBAIJAN SHOULD ‘ACHIEVE PEACE BY THEMSELVES’

news.az

Azerbaijan

News.Az interviews Markku Rossi, a member of the Finnish parliament
from the Centre Party.

You attended the conference on the 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s
independence. What do you think about the future of our country?

First of all, the speech of the president of Azerbaijan at the opening
ceremony was very interesting. You know, an audience always admires
someone who can speak without notes.

Azerbaijan has a very good future and, moreover, it is rich in
energy sources.

Meanwhile, the Karabakh conflict hampers the development of the
country and Azerbaijan is obliged to invest much of its funds into
armament, instead of development. I hope everything will be all right
and Azerbaijan will soon find another destination for its oil and
gas revenues. It is awful when countries are obliged to invest oil
revenues in arms to be used against their neighbours.

The best way is to reach peace through joint efforts.

This is clear. But how is it possible to agree, when there is not
enough trust between the parties?

I don’t know. But usually conflict settlement is dealt with primarily
by the conflict parties and they must achieve peace all by themselves.

No one will be of help, if neighbours do not want to coexist.

Therefore, it is up to Baku and Yerevan to find the way out of the
situation.

Azerbaijan and Finland have big, unexplored potential for interaction
in many spheres. What are the prospects for cooperation between
our countries?

The prospects are very good. People in our countries are equally
hospitable. Certainly, energy cooperation has big prospects, but
many projects could be implemented in the non-oil sector. What’s
most important is that there are no political problems between our
countries.

Do people in Finland know much about Azerbaijan?

Not so much. They know more about Azerbaijan’s “big neighbours”. I
think that cooperation in tourism needs to be established for better
familiarization with your region. In addition, it would be useful to
establish direct air communication between Helsinki and Baku. It is
necessary for people to come and see the country and what is going
on here.

Azerbaijan Has No Way

AZERBAIJAN HAS NO WAY

Times.am

Armenia

According to Armenian newspaper “Golos Armenii” (“Voice of Armenia”)
NK issue settlement process has been frozen somehow after Armenian,
Russian and Azerbaijani Presidents in Kazan. Armenian Minister of
Foreign Affairs Edward Nalbandyan referred to this theme in New-York
during meeting with OSCE MG co-chairs Robert Bradke and Igor Popov.

According to Armenian official advantage could be reached if Baku
denied those ten checks which Aliyev made in Kazan.

According to the newspaper the international society also realizes
that Baku disturbs the peace settlement process and Azerbaijan has to
deny its “checks”. Otherwise, “no way remains as Yerevan has already
showed Baku during the military parade devoted to the 20th anniversary
of Armenian independence that Azerbaijan will fail if tries to solve
the issue by military way”, the newspaper writes and underlines that
Azerbaijani-Turkish diplomacy is in deadlock.
