Soldier commits suicide

Soldier commits suicide

05:44 pm | Today | Politics

According to the “We Won’t Keep Silent” youth initiative’s reliable
sources, temporary soldier Narek Davtyan, who was recruited in June,
committed suicide at “Duts” military unit in Vanadzor on the evening of
December 2.

Things can’t go on like this.

The initiative’s studies show that the provinciality in the military units
are under the patronage of the commanders, and this allows them to make the
processes taking place at the military units easier to control. As a
result, we see many distortions and the society’s lack of appreciation of
the army.

The activities of officers and the bodies overseeing them at the military
units can be described as a corrupt grouping with unlawful agreements and
within which relations are normalized not by the laws and rules and
regulations, but by the rules and regulations of bandits.

“We Won’t Keep Silent” appeals to Commander-in-Chief of the Armenian Armed
Forces with the demand to immediately establish order in the army.

Republicans and BHP Replace Each Other

Republicans and BHP Replace Each Other

Haik Aramyan

Story from Lragir.am News:

Published: 14:25:15 – 03/12/2011

When Bargavach Hayastan Party was established on the eve of the
parliamentary election of 2007, the most nervous reaction was that of
the Republicans. At that time, `countering’ BHP, Serzh Sargsyan joined
the Republicans and became its actual leader, even though the formal
leader of this party was Andranik Margaryan. He incorporated the
criminal oligarchy of Armenia in the board of this party.

In that period, although BHP denied any confrontation, its actions
proved the opposite. Using the huge financial resource and
administrative levers, with the support of the top government, BHP
became a strong and influential organization which, in the absence of
opposition then, incorporated masses with opposition moods. On the eve
of the parliamentary elections it was announced that BHP has 460
thousand members.

At that time, it was already clear that the press and experts claimed
there are controversies between Serzh Sargsyan and Robert Kocharyan,
and the upcoming years will be marked by a confrontation between these
two parties but the pro-Congress press reported that it is just a
game. Four years later the Congress leader confessed that it is an
undeniable fact but the Congress missed the time. However, the
Congress continues to use the phrase `Kocharyan-Serzh’ regime though
time showed that Kocharyan and Sargsyan are practically incompatible.
This is by the way.

Most people wondered then what the reason of estblishment of BHP was
if there was already another monster party, the Republicans, which
would ensure the reproduction of the government, and what the goal and
role of BHP, a party without ideology and political activity, in the
future developments was. On the eve of the election 2007, BHP claimed
to parliament majority. The Republicans claimed to vast majority in
the next parliament.

After the elections 2007 the Republicans formed vast majority, while
BHP received 200 thousand votes despite statements on 400 thousand
members. The press reported that the votes for BHP were added to those
for Republicans. In the evening of May 13, the central office of the
Republicans celebrated their victory with firework, and President
Kocharyan went and congratulated the Republicans.

Let us return to the role of BHP. Why was this party established?
Before the elections in 2007, Robert Kocharyan’s advisor, Vahram
Nersisyants, and Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanyan made unexpected
speeches from different rostrums on monopolies, separation of business
and government, the need for fair elections. Serzh Sargsyan’s
administration says the same things.

In fact, the top government launched the Bargavach Hayastan Party
project for self-preservation, intended for a sweeping victory in the
parliamentary election and ending the Republican dominance. The
Republicans were identified with the criminal oligarchic regime which
was to be annihilated.

It was a period when the West demanded change in the public
administration of Armenia and spelled it out in the speeches of
Nersisyants and Oskanyan. Kocharyan accepted this condition and the
project of BHP the role of which was to be similar to that of don
Corleone in defeating the gangster rule in the United States. In other
words, one of the strongest of the oligarchs was singled out to fight
the others.

The preparatory stage of this mechanism was in accordance with the
plan but the mechanism failed on the election day. Serzh Sargsyan was
rumored to have persuaded Russia that BHP project was not in Moscow’s
favor and would eventually fight the Russian influence in Armenia. The
firework on March 13 was ordered by Moscow.

Interestingly, now the Republicans and BHP seem to replace each other.
The Republicans act as BHP at the time of its establishment. The
Republicans make commitments to fair elections, separation of business
and government, diversification of the foreign political and economic
line of the country, and so on. On the contrary, BHP is identified
with a Russian project.

Will this time BHP or Kocharyan persuade the Russians that Armenia is
escaping its influence? However, the situation is different now.
Russia seems to have put up with some internal and external realities
in Armenia and is not likely to engage directly in the upcoming
parliamentary elections. Besides, the Russian authorities are facing
serious internicine problems and have no time and fancy for Armenia.
Especially that after every interference with the elections Moscow
becomes more and more estranged from the traditionally pro-Russian
Armenian society. October 27, May 13, March 1…

PROFESSIONAL BOXER AND BANTAMWEIGHT CHAMPION VIC DARCHINYAN HOPING TO ENTER MMA IN 2012 – MMA NEWS

Professional boxer and Bantamweight Champion Vic Darchinyan hoping
to enter MMA in 2012 – MMA News

The mixed martial arts (MMA) division has become a lucrative and
interesting professional sector for boxers and those who have been
part of combat sports in the past. Vic Darchinyan, the 35-year old
Armenian/Australian boxer has decided to enter the world of MMA this
year. He made his professional boxing debut in 2000 where he defeated
Sande Kizito in Australia.

In 2001, he defeated Kizito to win the Australian Flyweight title
and in 2002 won the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) Pan
Pacific Flyweight title. Since then he has been successfully defending
his IBF Pan Pacific title. In 2007, he won the vacant IBO Super
Flyweight title and the vacant IBF Australasian Super Flyweight title.

He faced Philippine boxer Federico Catubay at the Auburn RSL Club
in New South Wales, Australia. In May 2010, he won the vacant IBO
Bantamweight title. He defeated Eric Barcelona from the Philippines.

He lost the title later in the year but was successful in regaining
it again. The Bantamweight title-holder is anxious and eager to enter
the MMA ring to test his skills as a fighter.

Darchinyan will be facing Anselmo Moreno in California on December
3, 2011. He will be facing the Panamanian boxer, Moreno for the
unification of the bantamweight world boxing title. Darchinyan was
in California promoting his boxing fight. During a media conference
in California, he shared his views about his possible migration from
boxing to MMA.

According to Gary Shaw, the promoter for Darchinyan in the US was also
hopeful for Darchinyan’s future with the MMA. He had the views that
if Darchinyan is able to defeat Moreno and wins the WBC belt, then
Darchinyan would probably look for a future in MMA as a professional
fighter. Shaw said, “Vic is serious about going into MMA after he
completes his triumph on Saturday night.”

Darchinyan further explained his plans by saying that he would not
leave boxing in the near future, but has thought of entering into the
MMA cage for his first fight, which will possibly take place in 2012.

He said, “It is 100 per cent I am going to have an MMA fight next
year. I know physically I am very strong and I want to show everyone
how good I am in MMA.”

His record stands with thirty-five knockouts along with thirty-seven
wins in his boxing career. If he were thinking to make a cross over
from boxing to MMA, then he would be a successful fighter for he has
powerful punches and an instinct, which has helped him attack his
opponents at the right time.

Theatre Critics Assure Tomorrow’s Theatre Is Saved

THEATRE CRITICS ASSURE TOMORROW’S THEATRE IS SAVED

Aysor.am
Friday,December 02

The Republican Festival of Youth directors’ which was initiated by
the Union of Theatrical Figures of Armenia and the support of the
RA Culture Ministry for the 6th time on November 23-30 was aimed at
discovering new young directors, give them a platform of presenting
their own works and make a reliable ground for tomorrow’s theatre.

Summing up the festival the secretary of the Union of Theatrical
Figures of Armenia Levon Mutafian noticed that this year it was the
first time that the young directors accepted the actors in the first
plan on the stage.

Festival not only discovered the director of tomorrow, but also gave
hope for tomorrow’s theatre, Sona Meloyan theatrical critic said
noticing an important thing, the different genres presented at the
festivals were united with one single thing, with professionalism.

“We speak about a serious quality. We can draw a conclusion from the
festival that our youth not only possesses the theatrical format,
but also knows how to work with it.”

However, the theatrical critics noticed the negative sides of the
presentations. Levon Mutafian noticed that in the performances of
the Armenian directors the Armenian spirit is absent.

Survey: Most Young Armenia Citizens Want To Stay, But Tend To Go Abr

SURVEY: MOST YOUNG ARMENIA CITIZENS WANT TO STAY, BUT TEND TO GO ABROAD DUE TO UNMET EXPECTATIONS
NAZIK ARMENAKYAN

ArmeniaNow
02.12.11

By Sara Khojoyan

A recent sociological research shows a majority of young people in
Armenia would like to see their future connected with their country,
but problems they encounter in everyday life often lead them to
thinking of leaving.

According to the data of the survey conducted by the Armenian
Sociological Association (ASA) among 1,065 people aged 15-25, 62
percent of respondents undoubtedly see their future in Armenia and
15.4 percent have definitively decided to go abroad. Twenty-two
percent of respondents did not deny the prospect.

ASA head Gevorg Poghosyan told ArmeniaNow that during the survey they
did not seek to clarify what particularly makes the first group of
young people feel connected to Armenia. But to the other question,
which is “What is needed for life to be successful?”, the surveyed
would point out good jobs and high salaries.

The ASA research shows that those young people who connect their
future with Armenia expect their salaries to be within a range of
200,000-500,000 drams (about $525-1,315).

“Of course, this is their expectation, which does not mean that they
will get that much money. It does not mean that those who will not get
that much money will certainly leave, but of course part of those 62
percent will leave if their expectations are not met,” says Poghosyan.

“Today, no specialist receives that high a salary, even academicians
don’t. It is clear that young people with such high expectations would
eventually have to look to other countries where salaries are higher.
In other words, it is also a factor that forms emigration,” adds
the sociologist, whose association’s survey revealed several reasons
for young people to leave Armenia, including unemployment and poor
economic conditions.

Edgar Amirkhanyan, 24, says adverse economic conditions make him do
everything to leave the country as soon as possible.

“I always have to think about my financial problems. I work in four
jobs at present [Yerkir Media TV, ArtEj studio school, Bridge of Hope
NGO, and seminar lecturer], but I cannot even buy a car. I bought
my notebook computer on installments,” says Amirkhanyan, who is now
taking classes in English so that he can go to the United States for
studies and possibly for staying there for permanent residence.

According to official data, nearly 80,000 people left Armenia for
good in 2008-2010, in independent experts estimate the number of such
people may be between 120,000 and 250,000 – an appreciable figure for
a country with a population estimated at around 3 million people. This
year’s figures show that during the first nine months the negative
balance of all departures and arrivals in Armenia has made 90,000.
Specialists, however, say the difference will be narrowed towards
the end of the year when ‘seasonal workers’ going to Russia and other
countries for temporary work every spring start returning home.

According to the National Statistical Service, as of October this
year, the average monthly salary in Armenia is around 115,000 (more
than $300), but the size of salaries in provinces is considerably
smaller than in capital Yerevan – by at least 20,000 drams (some $52).

Anush Baghdasaryan, a 26-year-old resident of Armenia’s third largest
city of Vanadzor, says she receives a monthly salary of 50,000 drams
(about $130). She does not complain about her life now, but knows
that when she gets married and has a family of her own the money will
hardly be enough.

“If jobs are created for young people and they are provided with good
opportunities for leisure, then the problem of forming families in
Armenia will also be solved. Everything is connected with employment,”
says Baghdasaryan. “I don’t want to leave Armenia, but if I see a
good opportunity abroad, for example in Europe, I will go.”

Interestingly, although for 67 percent of the survey respondents
family is a paramount value, only 21 percent of them are married and
29.5 percent plan to get married. Whereas 22 percent of the surveyed
youths are not yet thinking about married life, 25.9 percent say they
do not intend to get married at all.

Lala Ter-Ghazaryan is a 27-year-old married woman who doesn’t want to
leave Armenia, but she also says she doesn’t want to live in Armenia
as it is now.

“I don’t want to leave my country, I want my child to grow up here,
but without the disappointments that I’ve had, without facing
unlawfulness and injustices. I dream of being a citizen of a
democratic, law-abiding country, in that case no social difficulty
will make me buy an airplane ticket and go to another country to live
their with my child,” says Ter-Ghazaryan.

A report released this week by a global anti-graft watchdog,
Transparency International, shows persistent government corruption
in Armenia. It ranks the South Caucasus state among 70 or so nations
where corruption is perceived as a precondition for the functioning
of the state system.

Earthly Concern: Environmentalists Worry Over Mining Near Jermuk

EARTHLY CONCERN: ENVIRONMENTALISTS WORRY OVER MINING NEAR JERMUK
By Gayane Lazarian

ArmeniaNow

Environmentalists are worried that the open exploitation of the gold
mine in Amulsar, 16 kilometers outside Jermuk, Vayots Dzor province,
will cause great damage to the region in terms of pollution and
will harm the ecosystem of the area, known for its mineral water and
health sanitariums.

Environmentalists worry that blasting for minerals will release heavy
metals into the air.

“Cyanide in the air will cause respiratory tract problems,” says
Knarik Grigoryan, head of Armenian Women for Health and Healthy
Environment (AWHHE) NGO. “This fine powder, which can be spread
up to 30 kilometers, covers plants, passes to the animal chain and
eventually reaches us [people].”

The exploitation of the mine will be realized by British ‘Lydian
International’ company and its subsidiary ‘Geotim’ company, which
was granted a license and can proceed exploitation at will.

Armen Stepanyan, manager on environmental and social affairs of
‘Geotim’ company, not sharing environmentalists’ concerns, says that
a subtle percentage of uranium has been revealed during a geological
survey. According to Stepanyan, the samples of ore have been sent to
the Czech Republic, and have been checked in terms of the existence
of radioactive elements in them, and they correspond to the strictest
demands.

Hydro-ecologist Ruben Yadoyan told ArmeniaNow that the explosions in
the mine will affect the earth’s interior in the region.

“One should not play with the earth’s crust. Who can insure us that
the cracks which will appear on the surface of the earth after the
expositions will not be closed and the mineral water will not change
the direction of flow? Heavy metals may appear in the water. How is
it possible to do such a thing under so close to Jermuk?” Yadoyan says.
