No Anti-Russian Sentiments In Gyumri – Clergyman

NO ANTI-RUSSIAN SENTIMENTS IN GYUMRI – CLERGYMAN

19:29 * 14.01.15

In an interview with Tert.am, Head of the Shirak diocese of the
Armenian Apostolic Church, Bishop Mikael Ajapanyan commented on the
tragedy in Gyumri, when a 6-member family was murdered.

He said that church is calling on the people to remain calm.

“But people raise questions and must get clear answers. I cannot calm
them down for life,” he said. The issue of the Russian military base in
Gyumri must be discussed at the highest level, Bishop Ajapanyan said.

“The people in Gyumri are not hostages to this military base after
all. A baby in the cradle must have security guarantees. Armed Russians
have nothing to do in our streets, and it is the government that
must guarantee that. A Russian soldier cannot leave a military base,
march three kilometers to enter a house and perpetrate a massacre. I
think it is clear for everyone.”

“We should not say that people or a clergyman is politicizing. Our
people demand security and it is their right. It is not a matter of
anti-Russian sentiments or Armenian-Russian relations. Our people
deserve safety. A sleeping man must live in safety.”

Diana Markosian, Inventing My Father

DIANA MARKOSIAN, INVENTING MY FATHER

Willamette Week, Oregon
Jan 14 2015

Traveling to Armenia to reconnect with an absentee father.

Diana Markosian’s father would fit well in an Everclear song. During
her childhood, he would vanish without explanation for months at a
time, then return as if nothing had happened. His stormy relationship
with her mother ended when her mother fled to the United States
from Moscow, taking the then-7-year-old Markosian and her brother
to California. They never told her father goodbye and didn’t see him
again for 15 years. Her mother painstakingly cut his image out of every
picture in which he appeared in the family photo album–a detail that
adds poignancy to Markosian’s new photo series, Inventing My Father.

In 2013, Markosian flew to Armenia to reunite with her father, an
event she documented in black-and-white portraits and still lifes.

Because he had been a cipher to her during all the intervening years,
the experience of visiting him was not so much “getting to know you”
as it was inventing him from scratch: inferring the contours and
features of a phantom. From these untitled photographs, you can sense
how surreal the experience must have been for Markosian. In one image,
the man gazes at the camera through two windows, the glass panes blurry
with reflections and glare. Knowing the backstory, it’s impossible
not to see these distortions as metaphors for the time and distance
that have warped the man’s image in his daughter’s mind.

Another photo shows one of the man’s shirts on a hanger in the dying
light of early evening–an empty garment filled only with shadows. In
another dramatically lit shot, the man sits on his sofa, his white hair
aglow in sunlight, his face and torso completely obscured by shadow.

To the artist’s credit, she allows these multiple layers of meaning
to play out gently. She doesn’t hit you over the head with treacly
symbolism; she doesn’t need to. As a subject, her father doesn’t give
much. If he has a personality, he’s keeping it very close to his vest.

You get the sense that Markosian still harbors a good deal of anger
toward him but is doing her damnedest to understand and forgive–hoping
that just maybe, all these photographs might begin to fill up the
hole his absence left inside her.

Soccer: Mkhitaryan Not Interested In Juventus Move

MKHITARYAN NOT INTERESTED IN JUVENTUS MOVE

Forza Italian Football, Italy
Jan 14 2015

Juventus target Henrikh Mkhitaryan is reportedly not interested in
leaving Borussia Dortmund during the January transfer window.

Dortmund are currently at 17th place in Bundesliga standings, and it
was earlier reported that the Armenian could leave the Germans due
to the poor performance of the team.

But, according to Sky Sport Italia, despite Juventus making initial
contact with Dortmund over a possible move for Mkhitaryan, the Armenian
is not keen on the move away from from the club during January.

Mkhitaryan joined Borussia Dortmund from Shakhtar Dontesk in 2013
and has scored nine league goals in 43 appearances for the German side.

Armenia Did Not Send ECHR Judge Candidates List To PACE

ARMENIA DID NOT SEND ECHR JUDGE CANDIDATES LIST TO PACE

When asked by Iravaban.net whether media reports about the rejection
by the PACE of Armenia’s candidates for a judge in the European Court
of Human Rights (ECHR) are true, Armenian Foreign Ministry’s spokesman
Tigran Balayan said:

“The Foreign Ministry received an opinion of the Advisory Group
of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers of December 22,
2014 in response to an inquiry of the Republic of Armenia. It says
that one of Armenia’s candidates for a vacant position of a judge in
ECHR does not fully meet the requirements for a legist with generally
acknowledged authority.

In view of the aforesaid, a decision was made not to send the list
of the winners of the state contest held in Armenia to the PACE.

Therefore the list could not be rejected by the PACE”.

Armenian Political Expert: Demands For Withdrawal Of Russian Militar

ARMENIAN POLITICAL EXPERT: DEMANDS FOR WITHDRAWAL OF RUSSIAN MILITARY BASE FROM ARMENIA HAVE OBJECTIVE GROUNDS

by Nana Martirosyan

ARMINFO
Wednesday, January 14, 13:42

Russia must be interested in a transparent and fair investigation
into the Gyumri tragedy as this outrageous crime was committed by a
Russian soldier, Director of the Armenian Institute for International
and Security Affairs Stepan Safaryan told ArmInfo on Wednesday.

“The Russians must do all they can to convince the Armenians that
the investigation will be fair. And, first of all, they must give
the criminal to the Armenian police,” Safaryan said.

He said that there already are certain doubts that the investigation
may be unfair. “The investigation is being held by Arkady Bakhin,
Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister, while, according to the law, it
should be held by law enforcers. It seems they are just trying to
clear the skirts of the Russian military base, whose command is also
responsible for what has happened,” Safaryan said.

He does not think that there are anti-Russian moods in Armenian
society. “There is just a demand that the 102nd Russian military base
be withdrawn from the country, and there are objective grounds for it.

I don’t think that this demand comes from pro-Western forces. It
is natural that our society is displeased. It is not fair when an
Armenian soldier is killed when defending his land, while a Russian
soldiers kills a whole family in the same land,” Safaryan said.

As was reported earlier, a family of 6 persons was viciously murdered
in Gyumri. On Jan 12 in Gyumri, soldier of the 102nd Russian military
base in Gyumri, V.Permyakov, left his post. He penetrated into the
house of Avetisyans and shot all the 6 members of the family dead.

Only their 6-month-old baby has survived. The soldier left his uniform
and gun on the spot. He escaped wearing casual clothing. After a
daylong search, he was detained on the border with Turkey by the
frontier guards. Permyakov has already admitted to the murder.

incarcerations arbitraires a repetition…).

Georgian-Armenian Diocese Call For Return Of Churches

GEORGIAN-ARMENIAN DIOCESE CALL FOR RETURN OF CHURCHES

12:34 * 14.01.15

The Georgian-Armenian Diocese demanded the return of 442 churches
after conducting a study into pre-Soviet archives.

It has submitted a comprehensive report to a government agency
responsible for religious issues, Armenpress reports.

Speaking to the state news agency, a spokesperson for the
Georgian-Armenian diocese, Susanna Khachatryan, said that an earlier
list, submitted by the Georgian Government, included only the
functioning churches.

“This list includes all the Armenian churches in Georgia, the
functioning and bending ones and those that have been reduced to ruins
or Georgianized. The diocese in that way demands the return of its
own property considering that the present-day Georgian state is the
Soviet Georgia’s successor. Churches are destroyed and ruined. Time
leaves their imprint on them, so if no measures are taken for those
constructions’ perseveration, there will be no more churches in several
years,” Khachatryan said, expressing hope for a positive solution.

POPULOUS PROTEST IN GYUMRI DEMANDING THAT ARMENIAN SIDE INVESTIGATE MURDER OF FAMILY

Lragir.am
Country – 14 January 2015, 17:31

The participants of the car march in Gyumri gathered in front of the
prosecutor’s office of Shirak region demanding transfer of the case
of the Russian serviceman who killed the family of 6 in Gyumri to
the Armenian side for investigation.

Several thousands of people attended the action, the number of
participants is increasing. They say they will not leave the area until
they get an answer. The participants were told that the prosecutor’s
office was going to make a statement soon.

Disappointed with the statements of the prosecutor’s office and the
Investigative Committee, hundreds of people moved on to the Russian
102nd military base where the Russian serviceman Valery Permyakov
accused of killing 6 members of the Armenian family is held.

Around 20% Of Respondents Believe Turkey Should Apologize To Armenia

AROUND 20% OF RESPONDENTS BELIEVE TURKEY SHOULD APOLOGIZE TO ARMENIANS

Yerevan /Mediamax/. 9.1% of Turkish citizens who took part in the
survey believe what happened in 1915 was a genocide for which Turkey
should apologize.

The public opinion poll conducted by the Center for Economics and
Foreign Policy Studies (EDAM) comes to prove it.

Another 9.1% of public believe that Turkey should apologize to
Armenians that lost their lives in 1915 but should take no other steps.

12% of the public believe Turkey should express its regret over
Armenians that lost their lives in 1915 but should not apologize.

23.5% of the public believe Turkey should express regret over all
the Ottoman citizens that perished in that period as not everyone who
lost their lives in 1915 were Armenians. EDAM noted that this group
in fact supports Turkey’s stance announced by Prime Minister Erdogan
in his letter to Armenians on April 23, 2014.

21.3% of the public claim Turkey should not take any steps and the 25%
gave no response.
