Going green in Armenia

By Nick Thompson

Founded in 2016, OHM Energy is a technical company with green credentials, helping its customers find quality renewable energy solutions across Armenia. With support from the EBRD and the EU, the business recently underwent a rebrand, with the implementation of a new website and marketing strategy to help it grow.

OHM Energy’s co-founders, Sevak Gevorgyan (CEO), Hrant Gnuni (CFO) and Gevorg Hakhverdyan (CCO), met in their student years in 2004 when they were just becoming acquainted with the nuances of the energy sector and beginning to realise how much work there was to do in the sphere.

As post-graduates, confronted with the realities of climate change, they continued conducting laboratory research and writing scientific articles, mainly focusing on the renewable energy sector, and became specialists in the field. Fast-forward to 2016 and it was time to bring their practical scientific experience to the world of business through the establishment of OHM Energy.

Among other things, the company implements solar power station installations, energy efficiency measurements and other electrical projects throughout the country. During a challenging 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic took hold, the company nevertheless managed to build the largest solar power plant in Armenia, with a capacity of 6 MW.

Identity, influence and messaging

In its bid to become a leader in the local energy market and persuade prospective customers of the merits of renewables, OHM Energy’s co-founders reached out to the EBRD for support. Having identified what was required to reach those goals, we facilitated a tailored marketing plan and sales strategy to solidify the company’s commitment to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles.

The cornerstone of the project was to increase the accessibility of relatable and succinct information about solar energy and energy saving for the general population through the new website. This was an unmitigated success and, in Gevorg’s words, led to “a big increase in customer engagement, and consequently the growth and development of our business”.

Building on the newly developed marketing strategy, the company also invested in digital technologies including implementing automated systems for customer service and improving the company’s workflow.

The company name refers to the German physicist Georg Ohm, who discovered the fundamental law later named after him, where the ‘ohm’ is the standard unit of electrical resistance. The logo uses the omega symbol ‘Ω’, which often denotes the end of something – in this case, of old energy systems. Visually, although unintentionally, it also looks like a depiction of the sun meeting a solar panel. The branding reflects the company’s commitment to solar energy and communicates the virtues of solar over conventional energy systems.

Green growth

Armenia now allows excess electricity generated from solar panels to be sold to its electricity grid, and along with the EBRD’s Green Economy Financing Facility, which helps Armenian businesses invest in high-performing technologies, there is plenty of potential to scale up the renewable energy programme in the country.

Since the EBRD’s intervention, OHM Energy has become one of the top five companies in its field. It has seen a dramatic increase in sales and turnover and its operations have profited greatly from tax and other benefits promoted by government energy efficiency measures, resulting in higher demand for its products locally.

The company also acquired exclusive rights to represent the leading German solar panel manufacturer AE SOLAR in Armenia, which will help it stay competitive and achieve its green energy goals in Armenia and beyond.

“We have a number of developing programmes and envisage becoming an international Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor,” says Gevorg. “We already have several agreements in Georgia and are starting to cooperate with a number of international companies.”

And that is not all: the company also wants to expand into the distribution of solar pumps in Armenia, to popularise the use of electric cars, and to move into the construction of smart houses.

OHM Energy’s overarching vision is “to ensure progress that will guarantee the sustainable development of present and future generations by harmonising and balancing environmental issues”.

In an increasingly crowded market, with government incentives and competition fuelling innovation and decreasing the costs to become more sustainable, there has been a sea change in people’s attitudes towards green technologies, and companies which are driving our shift to renewables, like OHM Energy, are essential in ensuring that a brighter future starts with today.

Turkish press: CHP leader vows reconciliation for unity in society

A significant objective of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) is to repair the damaged sense of unity within the society by reconciling people from all walks of life, the party’s leader has said, underlining the need for augmenting love and good feelings among citizens.

“We are a country that has suffered big pains. We don’t deserve this. We all want to live in peace because our unity depends on this. Laughing together, crying together and growing with love. This must be our fundamental goal,” Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu said after a visit to the Hrant Dink Foundation on April 17 in Istanbul.

Kılıçdaroğlu met with Rakel Dink, the wife of the Turkish journalist of Armenian descent, Hrant Dink, who was assassinated in front of his newspaper called Agos in 2007. He was shot dead by an ultranationalist hitman who is now serving a life sentence in prison.

“I came here to explain once again that we will reconcile with the victims of the crimes committed by some dark criminal groups with which we will fight against during our government,” Kılıçdroğlu said.

The hitman of Dink’s assassination was caught, but those who motivated him for the killing are still in the dark, and many of these criminal groups have infiltrated into the state, Kılıçdaroğlu said, vowing to clear the state apparatus from these criminal networks through a determined struggle.

“Only then we can bring about unity in this country. My fundamental purpose is to live in unity in this beautiful country. If we are to leave a legacy to this country, it must be peace and unity. We will reconcile all together through love and unity,” he noted.

Ex-ombudsman: Pashinyan’s statements ‘dangerous’ for both Armenia and Artsakh

Panorama
Armenia –

Armenia’s former Ombudsman Arman Tatoyan says Nikol Pashinyan’s latest statements in the parliament are “extremely dangerous” for both Armenia and Artsakh.

“Statements of the kind, which stem from narrow political interests and are baseless, simply undermine Armenia’s security system,” he wrote on Facebook on Thursday.

Addressing the parliament on Wednesday, Pashinyan said that “all friends of Armenia” were and are waiting for Armenia to “lower the bar” on the issue of Artsakh’s status. He expressed regret for not sharing details of the Nagorno-Karabakh negotiation process with the Armenian people in 2018 and 2019.

“In order to cover up their mistakes and prevent discontent, various senior Armenian officials justified and legitimized the deployment of Azerbaijani troops near our villages and on roads,” Tatoyan said.

He accused the Armenian authorities of making statements conceding Armenia’s territorial rights to Azerbaijan, thus ignoring the security and the right to life of the Armenian and Artsakh people.

“These officials have consistently nullified the fundamental historical theses, starting from the fact that the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan has nothing to do with Artsakh. They ignore the fact that Baku’s state doctrine considers a large part of Armenia as “historical territory of Azerbaijan” and a policy of hatred comparable to fascism is pursued against Armenians,” the ex-ombudsman said.

“All this has untied Baku’s hands in the international arena and provided an opportunity to strengthen its position at the expense of false theses.”

Tatoyan condemned the promotion of the so-called “peace agenda” by the Armenian government amid Azerbaijan’s threats and criminal acts against Armenians.

“As a result, it turned out to be implemented at the expense of the rights and dignity of Armenians only because there are officials in Armenia who put their political interests and positions above the security of the country,” he stressed.

“Therefore, such statements by the head of the government or any other official have no legitimacy and cannot be put at the core of protecting the interests of our people,” Tatoyan said.

YEREVAN, MARCH 22, ARMENPRESS. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia issued a statement on Azerbaijan’s actions aimed at creating a humanitarian crisis in Artsakh, noting that it considers inadmissible this outrageous policy of systematic violence against the Armenians of Artsakh, ARMENPRESS was informed from the MFA Armenia.

“With the obvious intervention of the Azerbaijani side, the supply of natural gas from Armenia to Nagorno Karabakh was again disrupted near the city of Shushi, in the area under Azerbaijani control. Thus, in the conditions of unprecedented snowfall and unprecedented cold weather, about 120,000 people of Nagorno Karabakh have been deprived of the necessary gas supply,” the statement reads.

Only a few days ago, Azerbaijan did not allow to carry out works for 8 days for repairing the gas pipeline that had crashed in the same area under unknown circumstances.

According to the MFA Armenia, in addition to its ongoing actions of exerting psychological pressure on the people of Nagorno Karabakh, preventing the entry of international humanitarian organizations into Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan deliberately disrupts the normal operation of vital infrastructure in Nagorno-Karabakh, which obviously leads to humanitarian crisis in Nagorno Karabakh. “We consider this outrageous policy of systematic violence against the Armenians of Artsakh inadmissible.

“The current situation makes urgent the clear response of the international community to prevent a humanitarian crisis, as well as the immediate and unhindered involvement of international humanitarian organizations in Nagorno Karabakh,” the Foreign Ministry of Armenia said.
