Asbarez: Holy Cross Cathedral to Celebrate 100 Years of Service to L.A.’s Armenian Community

Holy Cross Cathedral in Montebello, CA

MONTEBELLO—The Holy Cross Cathedral will mark its 100th anniversary this year with a series of celebrations to be held under the auspices of Western Prelate Bishop Torkom Donoyan.

To kick off the celebrations, an evening church service is planned for Saturday, September 10, with the blessing of the incense and crosses at 7 p.m. The celebration will continue on Sunday, September 11 at 11 a.m. with the official divine liturgy; the blessing of Madagh; Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and Name Day of Holy Cross Cathedral.

This is a unique opportunity for the Los Angeles Armenian community to gather together to celebrate the Cathedral’s 100th anniversary. The church has served as a haven to many of the immigrants and their families who came to this country seeking freedom while maintaining a connection to their heritage.

Founded 100 years ago on 20th street in the heart of the then-Armenian-populated district in what is now Downtown Los Angeles, Holy Cross served as the spiritual anchor for the Armenians who were then slowly congregating in Southern California. Today, the Church, that was relocated in the 1980’s to the City of Montebello and recognized as a Cathedral, is the spiritual home for thousands of Armenian Americans across Southern California.

The celebrations will culminate at a banquet, scheduled for September 24, presided over by the Prelate.

The community invited to participate in these events while celebrating a centennial of spiritual service to the Armenian Community.

Banquet tickets and sponsorship opportunities are still available. Preferred seating available. For more information, please contact the church office at (323) 727-1113.

Forecast: It is not Armenia that will benefit from unblocking communications, but Turkey, which will get access to Central Asia

ARMINFO
Armenia – July 1 2022
David Stepanyan

ArmInfo.Negotiating the unblocking of transport communications, Ankara actually does not have such a goal at all. Turkologist Hakob Chakryan expressed this opinion to  ArmInfo.

“Even if these communications are eventually unblocked, this will not  benefit Armenia, which at best will get access to Azerbaijan and  beyond, but first of all Turkey, which will get direct access to  Central Asia, where it has long aspired to be

But at the same time, according to the expert, the three well-known  Turkish preconditions of 30 years ago are fully preserved. During  these three decades, governments have changed in Turkey, but the  demands to refuse recognition of the Genocide, to force the people of  Artsakh to recognize the authority of Baku and their own borders also  remained. Only the formulations has changed, but the hostile policy  towards Armenia has remained,” he said.

On July 1, during the fourth meeting of the special representatives  of Armenia and Turkey – Ruben Rubinyan and Serdar Kilic in Vienna,  the parties agreed to open the land border for third-country  nationals and decided to start the necessary processes in this  direction. An agreement was also reached to establish Armenia-Turkey  air cargo transportation as soon as possible. In addition, other  possible measures were discussed to achieve the main goal, that is   the final settlement of relations without preconditions. Since  December last year, Vice Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Ruben  Rubinyan and former Turkish Ambassador to the United States Serdar  Kilic have held three more rounds of talks:  one in Moscow and two –  in Vienna.

Chakryan explains the absence of preconditions for Yerevan on the  part of Ankara in the ongoing negotiations on normalization with  Turkey’s international obligations. Which does not at all prevent  Ankara from putting forward the same preconditions in the form of  periodic calls to Yerevan “to take a prudent position, from which the  entire region will benefit.”

In reality, with such talk about peace and regional stability,  Turkey, according to the Turkologist, is only trying to indirectly  get involved in the process of normalizing relations between Armenia  and Azerbaijan.  The expert considers such a prospect completely  unacceptable, considering that the processes between Armenia, on the  one hand, and Turkey and Azerbaijan, on the other hand, should go  exclusively in parallel, without any contact. First of all, due to  the fact that before the signing of the peace treaty, Azerbaijan must  withdraw its troops from the territory of Armenia and return the  Armenian prisoners of war,” the Turkologist summed up.

Iran’s security chief in Armenia on Caucasian tour

IRAN FRONT PAGE
July 7 2022

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani arrived in Armenia on Thursday as part of his Caucasian tour.

Shamkhani is scheduled to hold talks with his Armenian counterpart as well as Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Bolstering and expansion of bilateral relations in various fields and cooperation to boost regional stability and security are top on the agenda of Shamkhani’s trip.

Upon his arrival in the Armenian capital Yerevan, Shamkhani stressed that Iran is against any action that would lead to a geopolitical change in the region.

He stated that his trip is in line with the administration of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s main foreign policy goal to expand and deepen relations with neighboring countries.

Shamkhani emphasized that Iran supports intra-regional cooperation to establish peace and stability in the region and tackle regional issues.

He expressed hope that the dispute between Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan would be resolved and reconciliation efforts would lead to a lasting peace within the framework of preserving the territorial integrity of both countries.

The disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh has been a bone of contention between Yerevan and Baku.

They last fought a six-week war in 2020 that claimed more than 6,500 lives on both sides and ended with a Russian-brokered ceasefire deal that left Azerbaijan largely in control of the territory.
