ALMOST 30 years ago, Geoff Downes scoring a number one hit with ‘Video
Killed the Radio Star’ as one half of the 1970s group The Buggles.

Now, as fellow Buggles member Trevor Horn produces the new Robbie
Williams album and the former Take That singer performed "Video
Killed The Radio Star" at the Electric Proms, Mr Downes is helping
out with the annual Raglan music festival in his home village of the
past 12 years.

He said: "The countryside is absolutely beautiful. I’ve got know a
lot of people here and it’s become home. I don’t envisage leaving.

"The air is fresh, there’s nice people and it’s easy to get to places."

Mr Downes hasn’t turned his back on the rock and roll lifestyle –
he is currently touring with the rock band Asia.

Since reforming the original Asia line-up three years ago, Mr Downes
has toured with Asia non-stop.

He is currently working on a new album with Asia and has his own
recording studio in Monmouthshire.

The musician was last month given the Order of Honour decoration by
the President of Armenia.

Along with the likes of Brian May and members of Pink Floyd and Deep
Purple, he was given the medal as part of the 20th anniversary of
the Rock Aid Armenia project.

This was for their involvement in the 1989 remake of Deep Purple’s
"Smoke On The Water" which raised thousands of pounds for the victims
of the Spitak earthquake in 1988.

Mr Downes said he came from a musical family with his father being
a church organist.

After setting up The Buggles with Trevor Horn, Mr Downes said they
had to "fight tooth and nail" to keep the name.

The Buggles took a rough demo of "Video Killed The Radio Star" to 20
different record companies before one eventually took them on.

Nearly 30 years on, the hit is still gracing the airwaves with Robbie
Williams recently playing the track at the Electronic Proms.

Mr Downes said: "All of the audience were singing along and some of
them weren’t old enough to hear it first time round."

He said he hopes the former Take That star releases it as a single.

Mr Downes is still in contact with Mr Horn and they are considering
reforming The Buggles.

The music business is very different now thanks to shows such as
the X Factor which Mr Downes said are entertaining but a form of
"televised karaoke".

He added: "It is a shame when you hear kids say they want to be on the
X Factor rather than wanting to play the guitar like Jimmy Hendrix."

All Crimes Are Now Registered, Says Armenia’s Police Chief

ALL CRIMES ARE NOW REGISTERED, SAYS ARMENIA’S POLICE CHIEF

Tert

Armenia

Today, Armenian Police Chief Alik Sargsyan met with teaching staff
and students of the Law Faculty of Yerevan State University. Sargsyan
stated that this meeting was not an end in and of itself, but rather
a presentation of the assignments issued by the Armenian president
to Armenia’s police force.

Sargsyan said today the main aspects of Armenia’s police officers’ work
are the fight against crime, protection of public order, protection
of citizens’ rights, strengthening of the legal system and perhaps
the most important, recovering people’s trust towards the police.

The police chief stated that 7,960 crimes were registered as of
November 2009 compared to 5,600 crimes over a 9-month period last
year. The increase in crimes, according to the police chief, is
not alarming, since it has social roots: it can be attributed to an
increase in registering crimes since local police now register all
crimes, putting an end to the flawed system of not registering all
crimes. "Today, all crimes are registered," said the police chief.

Sargsyan said that in the near future, changes in the police activity
are expected also in relation to registering means of transport.

Armenia to receive US $60 mln from IMF

The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has
completed
the second review of Armenia’s economic performance under a program
supported by a Stand-By Arrangement (SBA), said in press-release
published on IMF web-site.
IMF approved a request for a waiver of nonobservance of end-September 2009
fiscal balance performance criterion, modification of the quantitative
performance criteria for end-December 2009 to reflect the revised
macroeconomic framework and rephrasing of purchases to make the
amounts scheduled to become available following the second and third
review available upon completion of the second review. These decisions
enable the immediate release of about $60 million, bringing the total
disbursed to $479 million. The 28-month SBA was approved on March 6,
2009.
Following the Executive Board’s discussion on Armenia, Mr. Takatoshi
Kato,
Deputy Managing Director and Acting Chair, stated: `The global crisis
has continued to have a serious impact on the Armenian economy.’
`The short-term outlook remains challenging. As external conditions
improve, growth is expected to resume gradually in 2010, although
risks remain, including a slower recovery of the global
economy. Continued reforms, particularly in the areas of tax policy
and tax reform administration, the financial sector, and the business
environment will be necessary to boost
the medium-term growth potential of the economy,’ Mr. Kato said.

"Heritage" Again Urges Armenia To Recognize The Independence Of Nago

"HERITAGE" AGAIN URGES ARMENIA TO RECOGNIZE THE INDEPENDENCE OF NAGORNO KARABAKH

/PanARMENIAN.Net/
02.11.2009 16:12 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Recently, the issue of recognizing the independence
of Nagorno Karabakh by Armenia has become topical in Armenia and
Nagorno-Karabakh, Anahit Bakhshyan , MP from the Heritage faction
told a news conference in Yerevan today. She informed that the party
a week ago again invited the Armenian MPs to read the bill on the
recognition of Artsakh’s independence.

According to the deputy, the various political circles in Armenia
and the NKR leadership indirectly talked about the need to recognize
Artsakh particularly in the light of Armenian-Turkish relations.

"Armenia must necessarily recognize the independence of Nagorno
Karabakh to have the right to demand the same from other countries,"
she said.

Anahit Bakhshyan stressed that by that recognition Armenia will help
to involve NKR in the negotiation process as a full participant. She
also added that after the recognition of Artsakh’s independence,
attitudes of international organizations must be changed, since it
will be a recognized state.

Answering the questions, in which boundaries should Nagorno-Karabakh
be recognized, the deputy particularly said, that Heritage party
takes as granted the 142th article of the Constitution of NKR,
which stipulates that " all the liberated territories are part of
the Nagorno Karabakh Republic".

"Despite the fact that the two ruling parties – the Republican Party of
Armenia and the Prosperous Armenia have already opposed this idea,
we will insist that the bill will enter the major agenda of the
parliament at least this time," Ms.Bakhshyan stressed.
