Christians mourn Arafat’s loss to Palestinians; see risk, opportunit

Christians mourn Arafat’s loss to Palestinians; see risk, opportunity

Michele Green
Ramallah, West Bank (ENI). Christian leaders in the Holy Land have
expressed sorrow at the death of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and
said they would be present at his funeral in Cairo and burial in
Ramallah.

In reactions from around the world, some church leaders noted that
Arafat’s death presented both opportunity and risk to the peace
process in the region.

Hailing Arafat as the man who put the Palestinian people on the world
map, Latin Patriarch Michel Sabbah, the most senior Roman Catholic
cleric in the region, said his death due to an unknown illness at a
hospital in France on Thursday “was a great loss to the Palestinian
people”.

“He succeeded in the recognition of the rights of the Palestinian
people so today everyone, all the governments even Israel, is
convinced that one day a Palestinian state must be created for the
Palestinian people,” said Sabbah, the first Palestinian to head the
Catholic Church in the Holy Land.

He said Arafat had tried to help Palestinian Christians by attending
Christmas services at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem and
also by taking political measures to assist the stature of the
dwindling number of Christians in the Holy Land.

Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the Vatican secretary of state, said: “The
holy father [Pope John Paul II] prays to the prince of peace that the
star of harmony will soon shine on the Holy Land and that the two
peoples dwelling therein may live reconciled among themselves as two
independent and sovereign.”

Anglican Bishop Riah Abu El-Assal from St George’s Cathedral in East
Jerusalem, said, “The death of Yasser Arafat is a great loss
certainly to the Palestinian people but also to all who are after
peace with justice.” He noted, “We as members of the Christian
community feel the same loss if not more because of his real concern
for the Palestinian Christians, institutions and holy places.”

Bishop Arris from the office of the Armenian Patriarch in Jerusalem
said the Armenian community had always respected Arafat as the
elected leader of the Palestinian people. “He has always been a good
listener to the Christian requests and seemed to be the voice of
moderation in this regard,” he said.

Members of all the local churches said they would send high level
delegates to Arafat’s military-style funeral in Cairo and burial at
his battered compound in Ramallah on 13 November.

“Yasser Arafat was a man who will be remembered in radically
different and often contradictory ways,” said Lutheran World
Federation President Bishop Mark Hanson and General Secretary Rev.
Ishmael Noko in a joint statement.

“For many, he was the personification of the Palestinian struggle for
self-determination and independence, a freedom-fighter, an heroic
leader, a father figure,” they said. “For others he was an implacable
foe, an obstacle to peace. For Palestinian Christians, he was a
strong supporter of their religious rights and freedoms, and always
attentive to their place and their importance in the Holy Land.”

The Lutheran leaders said although the consequences of Arafat’s death
were unpredictable, it presented “opportunity as well as risk”. They
called on the Israeli and Palestinian leadership to grasp the
opportunity to renew active commitment to dialogue instead of
violence.

They also called on the US government and the other members of the
Quartet – the United Nations, European Union and Russia – involved in
shaping an international policy towards resolution of the
Israel-Palestine conflict, to re-engage in the search for peace.

Peter Weiderud, director of the World Council of Churches’ commission
on international affairs said: “In solidarity with the Palestinian
people, the World Council of Churches will continue to work for human
rights, sustainable livelihoods, medical care and basic freedoms, in
the days and years that lie ahead and until there is peace.”

MELKONIAN CYPRUS ALUMNI VOW TO FIGHT ON
=E2=80=A2 Fiery speech by guest of honour Jack Melkonian
=E2=80=A2 Melkonian students shamelessly forced indoors
=E2=80=A2 5,000 CYP pledged in a fund-raiser
(Nicosia – November 10 – Cyprus Alumni press release): More than 300
Melkoniantsis and friends turned up for the Cyprus Alumni lunch on Sunday,
November 7, also attended by a delegation from the Lebanon Alumni.
The biggest absence was that of the present-day Melkonian students who were
shamelessly forced indoors and not allowed to take part in an event that
aims to save their school.
Rev. Fr. Der Mashdotz blessed those present, after which the guest of
honour, Jack Melkonian, gave a fiery speech, condemning the actions of the
AGBU Central Board to close down the school his great uncles built 78 years
ago.
“This financial institution (the AGBU) is NOT the owner of the school — you
are, the Armenian Community and the Diaspora,” Jack said, with the crowd
roaring to applause.
He talked about his contacts with the AGBU executives and the deception
about the true plans about the Melkonian school. “Little did I know we would
come to this when I was here last for the school=E2=80=99s 75th anniversary,=
” said
Jack Melkonian, adding that he would help in the struggle to keep the
Melkonian open, as this has tremendous potential for the future generation
of Armenians.
The first prize was a gold ring donated by Avakian Jewelers of London and
Geneva, drawn from the entrance ticket. Some 30 other prizes, including
jewelery, airline tickets, electronic equipment and vouchers from shops and
restaura nts were drawn from the 3000 lottery tickets that were nearly
sold-out.
Cash donations and pledges are expected to exceed CYP 5,000.
The Alumni will be making an official announcement shortly with the full
financial details of the fundraiser.

ARMENIANS INTEND CLAIM AGAINST AZERBAIJAN AT EUROPEAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTS

12.11.2004 14:55

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Yesterday the philanthropic friendly association
Shahumian-Getashen spread a statement, which specifically says,
“Residents of Shahumian and Getashen regions, who were deported
by force, intend to claim against Azerbaijan at the European Court
of Human Rights.” The matter concerns territories, which are today
controlled by the Azerbaijani troops. The suit will specifically claim
against violation of the right of the deported residents for property
protection and respect of habitation. The Union has expressed readiness
to defend in authoritative international instances the interests
of thousands of Armenian families, who suffered from Azerbaijan’s

Holiday business outlook positive

Retailers forecast between 3% and 6% growth in sales at Glendale
stores.

By Darleene Barrientos, News-Press and Leader

DOWNTOWN GLENDALE — At John Drayman’s store, where he fulfills orders
to restore and preserve old photographs, business has been very
healthy in October. And over the years, he’s learned a good October
in his store is a merry Christmas in the Montrose Shopping Park.

“In my particular business, Christmas orders have to go in early, and
it has been a very good October,” said Drayman, a member of the
Montrose Shopping Park Assn. “That usually means a very good
Christmas season. I think we’re poised for a terrific shopping season
up here.”

During a holiday economic and trend forecast this week at the
Glendale Galleria, retailers predicted healthy growth for this year’s
Christmas shopping season, both in sales and in trends that lean
toward more luxury and higher-end merchandise.

“We’re projecting a 3% to 4% increase over last year,” Galleria
Senior General Manager JoAnne Brosi said. “What we’re seeing now is
earlier holiday shopping. I think the season is starting already — as
of last weekend we have not had a parking spot on Saturday or Sunday.
I saw a lot more people with shopping bags, and there seems to be
more of an urgency about starting earlier.”

If the number of stores opening this year were any indication of
growth, the Galleria would be ahead of the game. New stores will
include Metropark, a retailer catering to hip, urban men and women;
Club Libby Lu; Melt Gelato; Biotherm; and 4 Love 21, an accessory
retailer from the creators of Forever 21, scheduled to open next
month.

To Jack Kyser, senior vice president and chief economist for the Los
Angeles County Development Corp., the optimism for Glendale is in
line with the brighter future predicted for the rest of the
Southland.

“Our forecast in Christmas in Southern California is for an 8.5%
increase,” Kyser said. And if mid-range department stores like
Robinsons-May fulfill their promises of providing more customer
service, the end result might be a jump in holiday jobs, he said.

“In Christmas 2003, there was an 11,500-increase in the number of
retail jobs during the Christmas season,” Kyser said. “We should
probably match that and probably exceed it if the mid-range stores
follow through.”

But because of the high gas prices, cost of housing and lines of
credit topping off, Armenian-American Chamber of Commerce President
Joe Dermenjian believes discretionary funds will be limited.

“It will probably be slower than last year,” said Dermenjian, a
financial planner. “Many consumers depend on credit and many are
maxed out on credit. All the prices are coming up, from food to
clothing and everything else.”

But because Dermenjian believes the job market is better than it was
last year, retailers can probably look forward to next year.

“It’s a tight time,” Dermenjian said. “[People are] going to have to
think twice before they spend money, but they won’t stop shopping.
Next year, it will probably be much better, and hopefully, the stock
market will pick up, too.”

1939: That class had class

1939: That class had class
By Bob Kaprielian/ Guest Commentary

Watertown TAB & Press, MA
Nov 12 2004

A few months ago my daughters, Rachel and Myra, were strolling my
grandson, Will, down Marion Road, where they came upon a discarded
Watertown High School yearbook from 1939. Knowing of my inventory of
WHS athletic histories, they thought it might be useful to add to my
collection.

Upon receipt, I immediately went to the section of arguably the
best baseball team ever to play at Watertown High. This 1939 team,
coached by Dan Sullivan and captained by Oscar Khederian, went on to
be inducted into the Watertown High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
This truly great team had five Hall of Famers: Mike Calden, Bill
Shannon, George Yankowski, Bill Kearns and Khederian.

Reflecting upon this discarded annual, I wondered about the
owner. The book was in pristine condition after 65 years, but
contained no indication as to who the owner was. My speculation is
that the owner was deceased, with no progeny to treasure this legacy.
My curiosity made me read this book of memories from cover to cover,
and to think about the teenagers pictured therein in the flower of
their youth.

Little did that generation realize that in mere months, Europe
would be at war and America would enter World War II in a year and a
half. This group of graduates had just lived through the Great
Depression which was beginning to abate. Roosevelt’s New Deal was
showing success with programs such as the Works Progress
Administration. The Daughters of the American Revolution refused to
allow singer Marian Anderson to perform at Constitution Hall in
Washington. First lady Eleanor Roosevelt arranged for the 37-year-old
Anderson to sing at the Lincoln Memorial. Dying Lou Gehrig gave his
“luckiest man alive” speech at Yankee Stadium. The World’s Fair
opened in New York. “Gone With the Wind” and “The Wizard of Oz” were
released that year.

The 1939 graduates would be now celebrating their 83rd or 84th
birthdays this year. There were about 400 Watertown High graduates in
1939. The principal was Herbert Archibald.

The aspirations for many of the female graduates typically
seemed to be for entering the business world, like Helen Avtgis of
Pleasant Street, who wanted to be a buyer. Dora Palladino, also of
Pleasant Street, wanted to go to business school. Phyllis Danner of
Common Street had her sights set on Wheaton College, and Betty Davis
of Oliver Street wanted to go to Lasell Junior College.

Stuart Newell, president of the class, was interested in going
to college. Varoujian “Juicy” Samuelian of Dexter Avenue went to
Harvard and later became the longtime editor of the Armenian Mirror
Spectator.

The Glee Club had 76 members. The band and the orchestra had
approximately 60 members each. Another sizable club was the Knitting
Club, advised by Miss Sweet. Each member was expected to complete two
sweaters or the equivalent during the year.

The girls basketball team was undefeated in its five-game
schedule, beating Winchester, 50-12, and Newton, 27-6. Their coach,
Sally Biggane, looked the same when I saw her 15 years after her
yearbook photo.

All these lives would change after Dec. 7, 1941, with America’s
entry into World War II. Bill Kearns would find himself in the Navy
through the war, and was present at the Japanese surrender in Tokyo
Bay in 1945. George Yankowski would be in the U.S. Army infantry, and
he fought in the Battle of the Bulge, where he was a sniper. Bill
Shannon was a Marine who fought at Iwo Jima, where he would receive
the highest decoration a Marine can receive, the Navy Cross.

These 1939 graduates faced the greatest of challenges in the
20th century: living through the Depression; fighting and winning in
the largest conflict in world history; and building America into the
greatest country in the world into the 21st century. These are the
reasons that these graduates are part of what is called “the Greatest
Generation.” Their deeds and accomplishments are truly remarkable. I
believe recent and current graduating classes can look to the 1939
graduates with admiration and resolve to follow their legacy of honor
and excellence.

Athletic Hall of Fame and a local cable television host, among other
things. He lives on Mount Auburn Street.

Armenian Job Sharks Do Brisk Business

Much of Armenia’s job market remains in the shadows as an unofficial
labour exchange continues to flourish.

By Karine Ter-Saakian in Yerevan (CRS No. 261, 10-Nov-04)

Yerevan’s “black employment exchange” in the heart of the city pulses
with life early in the morning. Middle-aged men carrying materials
for the painting and building trades rub shoulders with younger men
who are busily making deals.

These young men are the brokers who run most of the business in the
market, getting here by six or seven in the morning. By eight, most
of the qualified workers have been snapped up and it is only the
unskilled labour that remains.

The market has existed since Soviet times, when the authorities
tolerated its presence even though it was strictly illegal. That
remains the situation now, with the Armenian government turning a
blind eye to a market that continues to do business because
unemployment is high.

Job-seekers say they came here because looking for work through the
official labour exchanges can be very hard.

Onik, 40, lost his job 15 years ago and is a regular at the “black
exchange”. “I’ve got a degree in civil engineering, and I worked as a
construction foreman until I lost my job,” he told IWPR. “I go to the
exchange to find work such as renovating flats or helping out on a
building site.”

According to a recent report from the Armenian National Statistics
Agency, nine per cent of working-age Armenians – 112,000 people – are
unemployed.

But Eduard Agajanov, an independent economist who used to head the
state statistics agency, warned IWPR, “This cannot be true. That’s
the unemployment level of a highly industrialised economy.

“The real figure is about two and a half times higher. Some analysts
actually put it at four or five times [the official number], which
translates into half of Armenia’s population being unemployed.”

Agajanov said these higher unemployment estimates included people who
did have jobs but should be counted as unemployed since they were
neither on a payroll nor paying taxes .

Experts say the shadow labour market is fed by people who are
frustrated with the bureaucracy of the official labour exchange, and
deterred by the high fees charged by recruitment agencies.

A source at Armenia’s welfare ministry insisted that it was not
difficult to find a job, but accepted that doing so through the
official route was difficult. “It’s true there are big queues at the
official employment exchange, especially if you are a qualified
professional. I believe the real unemployment level is at least
double the official figure,” said this source, declining to be named.

Onik agrees it is useless to expect the government to find you a job,
while private firms are too costly.

“One can go to an official job exchange, sign up and everything, but
they will ask you to bring reams of paperwork regarding your marital
status, your work career, residence and so on,” he said. “Then you
wait for many months. They will pay you unemployment benefit, but you
are likely to spend most of it on getting the paperwork they require
from you.

“On the other hand, a private recruitment firm will charge you half
your first monthly salary; that’s too much. At the black exchange,
the brokers charge 20 to 30 dollars, so it’s well worth the trip.”

The “black exchange” operates peacefully, with arguments between
brokers and prospective workers rare. The place is divided up, and no
one trespasses on anyone else’s patch.

The clientele ebbs and flows according to season, and is influenced
by the general situation in the South Caucasus.

Many of the job-seekers have recently returned from Russia and are
looking for work again.

“I left Armenia in 1992 and found a job right away in the Saratov
region [Russia] building houses and roads,” Ruben, 40, told IWPR.
“Then they started treating us badly and I decided to leave. The
money I had brought back is all gone. I’ve already found one job
here, renovating a private home. I hope I get lucky again.”

Many car mechanics and truck drivers have recently turned up looking
for work. The drivers have been hit hard by the recent closure of the
Georgian-Russian border, following the Beslan tragedy in North
Ossetia in September.

“Nowadays I consider myself lucky if I get to ship some potatoes or
cabbages from Tashir [in northern Armenia] or Javakhk [in southern
Georgia] once a week.” said Levon, a professional driver.

“Security is very expensive, but if you are driving to Russia, you
aren’t going to make it without a security escort. Guards have to be
hired from a professional security firm. They charge a lot, but it’s
worth it,” said another truck driver.

Ashot Mhitarian, an official at Armenia’s central tax office, said
there was an urgent need to regulate the recruitment firms exploiting
the job market. “Some of them get incorporated as a public
organisation or some kind of small business, in order to pay as
little tax as possible,” he said. “And then they go and rip off their
clients.”

Mhitarian is positive the “black employment exchange” will continue
for a long time to come. “When the unemployment rate really drops to
nine per cent like the government says it is, there won’t be any need
for this kind of unofficial job forum. But for the time being, all
the money that’s being made here is going to stay in the shadows,
where the government cannot tax it.”

At the job market, one community is managing to get jobs at a rate
quite disproportionate to its size.

These are the Molokans, a small Russian Christian community whose
ancestors settled in Armenia in the 19th century. There are just
2,000 of them in Yerevan.

“They work faster; they are neater and more responsible,” explained
Georgy Harutiunov, a Yerevan resident looking for workers to renovate
his flat. “Although they charge more than Armenian labourers, they
provide better quality.”

Major banks and corporations prefer to hire Molokan women to clean
their offices. “I’m not saying Armenians can’t do cleaning, but the
Molokans do it better,” one bank manager told IWPR.

Ashot Manukian, a foreman at a Yerevan construction site, agreed, “At
the exchange, you never know who you’re hiring. The majority of
private repair jobs are done by the Molokans these days. They are
rock-solid. You can leave them in your house, come back hours later,
and nothing will have been stolen. Great workers, too.”

Onik, competing for jobs at the unofficial labour exchange, thinks
the Molokans are a sort of mafia that claims all the best jobs.

“But I have nothing against them,” he added. “We’re all earning a
living as we can. But sometimes I wonder: are Armenian builders all
that bad? How come the Molokans get to do everything?”

A group of Molokans was standing nearby, keeping away from the rest
of the job-hunters. “They do that. Keep their distance. They’ll only
talk if it’s unrelated to their work. Theirs is a very different
life.”
