University of Tehran Honors AUA Dean of Engineering Dr. Armen Der Kiureghian

Dr. Armen Der Kiureghian was selected as a distinguished alumnus of the
Faculty of Engineering of Tehran University, Iran in December 2004. In a
ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the Faculty of Engineering, the
University recognized one alumnus from all fields of engineering per year of
the Faculty’s existence for their scholarly and professional contributions
to engineering. It may be of interest to note that among 70 honorees there
were 4 Armenians. Der Kiureghian received both his B.Sc. in Civil
Engineering and his M.Sc. in Structural Engineering from Tehran University.
He holds a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign.

After the devastating Spitak earthquake of 1988 in Armenia, Dr. Armen Der
Kiureghian was instrumental in establishing the American University of
Armenia in Yerevan as an affiliate of the University of California.
Concurrently with his position as Taisei Professor of Civil Engineering at
UC Berkeley, Dr. Der Kiureghian has served as the founding Dean of
Engineering since 1991 and directed the Engineering Research Center of AUA
until 2004. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of the American

Baku Is Sure That OSCE Mission Will Confirm The Facts Of Settlement

BAKU IS SURE THAT OSCE MISSION WILL CONFIRM THE FACTS OF SETTLEMENT
OF THE OCCUPIED TERRITORIES OF AZERBAIJAN BY THE ARMENIANS

BAKU, FEBRUARY 9. ARMINFO-TURAN. The OSCE mission for reveal of facts
of settlement by Armenians of the occupied territories of Azerbaijan
completed the first stage of its work. This the opinion of the Deputy
Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Araz Azimov expressed to journalist
while commenting on the results of the trip of the mission to the
occupied territories of Azerbaijan. During the next stage the mission
must analyze the collected materials and prepare report. “We expect
it will be done in the near future and the report will be submitted
to the OSCE Minsk group mission, and then to the permanent Board of
OSCE”, Azimov said.

He expressed sureness that facts submitted to the mission by the
Azeri side were confirmed. In particular, the materials from open
and other sources on settlement in the occupied territories of
20-23 people were submitted to the mission. But even if the mission
revealed at least half or one-third of the figure it confirms the
fact of illegal settlement, Azimov said. He told that in accordance
with the Geneva convention of 1949, the occupant does not have the
right to settle or change the demographic situation in the occupied
territories. Azimov noted groundlessness of the arguments of the
Armenian side that the Armenian living before in Baku, Ganja and
Sumgayit were settled there. He told that international humanitarian
law prohibits settlement in the occupied territories the people which
have not lived there before regardless of their origin.

Azimov did not exclude that they would continue settlement of the
occupied territories. He thinks that it can be connected with the
coming liberation of the occupied territories or the question on
withdrawal of people illegally settled there will be brought up, he
noted. Speaking about the significance and the results of the mission
Azimov said that by initiating this question Azerbaijan warned Armenia
that it will never reconcile with annexation of its territory.

Azimov does not exclude that in the end final assessment will be
given to the conclusions of the mission. “However the main goal for
Azerbaijan is liberation of all occupied territories and Azerbaijan
considers the problem of settlement just in that context”, Azimov said.

Residents Of Yerevan’s Noragavit Community Rally Against Enlargment

RESIDENTS OF YEREVAN’S NORAGAVIT COMMUNITY RALLY AGAINST ENLARGMENT OF
EREBUNI AIRPORT RUNWAY AT THE EXPENSE OF THEIR LANDS

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 10. ARMINFO. Residents of Yerevan’s Noragavit community
held a demonsration in front of the armenian Government building today demanding
compensation for their lost land plots.

They says that in 2001-2002 they were promised compensation for the use of
their lands (22 h) for enlarging the runway of Yerevan’s Erebuni airport. But
they have received nothing so far.

The chief civil aviation department refuses to comment on the issue saying
that the Erebuni airport is managed by the Defence Ministry. The DM press
service promises to give information in a few days.

It should be noted that presently the airport is used by Russian military
men. As far as ARMINFO knows the Armenian Government is preparing it for civil
passenger flights. The runway has been restored and enlarged, the same is for
the passenger terminals. The operation of an alternative civil airport in
Armenia is stipulated by the EU under the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement.

e-SIM MMI to Provide Complex Language Support for Mobile Handsets wi

e-SIM MMI to Provide Complex Language Support for Mobile Handsets with
nCore’s Multilingual Software; Companies Partner to Provide Complete Rendering and
Editing of Complex Languages on Mobile Handsets

Business Wire
Feb 10, 2005

e-SIM Ltd. (OTCBB: ESIMF.OB), a leading provider of MMI (Man-Machine
Interface) solutions for mobile handsets and nCore Ltd. a leading
provider of internationalization solutions, announced today that
they have partnered to supply complete multiple-language support
for mobile handsets. To facilitate the success of this solution the
companies have integrated nCore’s multilingual engine, nScript, into
e-SIM’s MMI solution. e-SIM plans on supplying the nScript engine as
part of its complete MMI offering to its customers.

With this partnership, e-SIM’s customers will be able to sell handsets,
which include complete editing and rendering support for languages
such as Arabic, Armenian, Chinese, Russian, Farsi, Georgian, Greek,
Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Malay, Malayalam, Pashto, Takalog, Thai,
Urdu and Vietnamese, in addition to the Latin and Chinese scripts
already supported by e-SIM. nScript will also enable handsets, based on
e-SIM’s MMI solution, to include a rich text editor, which allows for
the creation of styled text messages that can include in-line graphics.

e-SIM’s market-proven, end-to-end MMI solution includes a complete MMI
reference design, a comprehensive set of RapidPLUS(TM) development
and customization tools, and a broad range of professional
services. e-SIM’s business model is based on licensing its MMI
reference design, licensing its RapidPLUS(TM) development tools,
and collecting runtime royalties for each handset incorporating
its technology.

nCore’s multilingual engine, nScript, is an embedded software component
optimized for devices with limited memory and processor speed. The
restricted operating environment, together with the complex algorithms
needed for text layout, place tough demands on efficiency of design
and implementation. nScript implements two main components of any
user interface design: sophisticated text rendering and text input.

The e-SIM – nCore integrated product will be demonstrated at
the upcoming 3GSM World Congress in Cannes between February
14th and 17th. To schedule a demonstration please contact
mailto:[email protected].

“Collaboration between e-SIM and nCore further enhances our complete,
pre-integrated MMI solution,” commented Reuven Kleinman, VP Business
Development and Marketing at e-SIM. “With nCore’s technology, e-SIM
can now provide handset manufacturers a competitive edge entering
the fast-growing emerging markets in Asia and the Middle East.”

“We are excited to see the nCore localization technology integrated
with e-SIM’s complete MMI solution and look forward to a long term
partnership. With this cooperation e-SIM licensees are getting the
best value and performance proposition for designing handsets for
all market areas.” said Tapio Koivuniemi, CEO of nCore Ltd.

ACYOA COMPLETES SUCCESSFUL REGIONAL CONFERENCE SERIES

“Lord, I am a conductor with tired hands, smeared notes, and missing
musicians, working to bring alive the greatest symphony” — so went a
prayer written by a group of young Armenian Church members during a
recent one-day conference in Dallas, TX.

As part of the conference organized by the Armenian Church Youth
Organization of America (ACYOA), participants examined a prayer written
generations ago by St. Gregory of Narek. They were then asked to craft
their own prayer. It was just one of the activities at the ACYOA
Southern Regional Conference designed to strengthen individual ties to
God and local ACYOA chapters.

Participating in the conference — held at the St. Sarkis Church in
Dallas, TX, on Saturday, January 29, 2005 — were ACYOA members from
both the Dallas chapter and the St. Kevork Church in Houston. They
gathered to talk about their faith as well as the ACYOA organization.

“The conference far exceeded my expectations,” said Karoun Charkoudian,
a member of the St. Kevork Church. “The passionate discussions and
interactive workshops provided an open, comfortable atmosphere so that
we could all explore our feelings about Christianity as it relates to
spirituality, marriage, and sex.”

Fr. Mikael Devejian, pastor of St. Sarkis Church, and ACYOA Executive
Secertary Nancy Basmajian served as presenters at the Southern
conference.

“This was a great opportunity to discuss how God is a part of our daily
lives and also get to know one another better,” Fr. Devejian said.

The ACYOA Central Council, which sponsors an annual series of regional
conferences in four different areas, was represented at each program by
the group’s regional liaisons.

“The smaller, more intimate settings of the regional conferences allow
the participants to have in-depth discussions while focusing on their
own thoughts regarding spirituality and their individual faith
experiences,” said Maria Derderian, the ACYOA Central Council member who
attended the Southern Regional meeting. “Through witnessing their faith
and coming together in true Christian fellowship, they form a stronger
connection with each other, which then continues to strengthen their
ACYOA chapters.”

LAST IN A SERIES

The meeting in Texas was the last in the current series of regional
gatherings organized by the ACYOA.

Earlier, members in New England met on January 15, 2005, at the St.
James Church of Watertown, MA, where they heard from Fr. Arakel
Aljalian, pastor of the St. James Church; Fr. Vasken Kouzouian, pastor
of the Holy Trinity Church of Cambridge, MA; and Yn. Arpi Kouzouian,
coordinator of youth outreach for the Diocese.

Other conferences were held for members in the Midwest region on October
23, 2004, at St. John’s Church of Southfield, MI; and in the
Mid-Atlantic region on November 6, 2004, at St. Mary Church in
Livingston, NJ.

The next major event for the ACYOA will be the 6th Annual National Young
Adult Leadership Conference from February 18 to 20, 2005, at the Don
Bosco Retreat Center in Stony Point, NY. The conference is free, and
parishes are asked to send two representatives each. Parishes are also
encouraged to help their representatives cover travel costs, to ensure
as many young people as possible can attend.

A number of participants in past ACYOA National Young Adult Leadership
Conferences have gone on to serve their home parishes as parish council
members and in other leadership positions.

This year the conference will explore the theme “Fellowship: A Common
Life in Christ”. Those seeking more information are encouraged to visit
or e-mail Nancy Basmajian at [email protected].

THE HEAD OF THE CHURCH OF DENMARK

IN ANTELIAS

Antelias, Lebanon – The Head of the Church of Denmark, Bishop Erik Norman
Svendsen visited the Catholicosate of Cilicia on Tuesday, the 8th of
February and held a meeting with His Holiness Aram I. The two spiritual
leaders discussed issues related to Christian education and inter-church
relations.

His Holiness expressed his belief about the importance of renewing the
ecumenical movement and making it relevant to people’s lives. In this
context, the Catholicos and His Grace also discussed the Middle East, the
birthplace of Christianity. They emphasized the importance of speeding up
the peace process and bringing to a halt the emigration of Christians.

The two spiritual leaders continued their discussions over lunch and spoke
mainly about the social service activities of the Catholicosate of Cilicia.
Thanks to the support of the Danes, the “Birds’ Nest” orphanage, has in the
past provided shelter to thousands of Armenian orphans. The orphanage is
currently under the patronage of the Catholicosate of Cilicia, but the
Church of Denmark continues to aid the institution. Bishop Norman assured
His Holiness of his intentions to keep the orphanage the center of his
attention.

Bishop Norman had visited the Catholicosate of Cilicia four years ago and
His Holiness Aram I had last year been the official guest of the Church of
Denmark.

Georgian president delivers annual address to parliament

Georgian president delivers annual address to parliament

Rustavi-2 TV, Tbilisi
10 Feb 05

President Mikheil Saakashvili has set out the challenges he sees
facing Georgia in his annual address to parliament and said that he
is ready to go to Russia to meet President Putin to improve relations
between the two countries.

Opening his speech, which was broadcast live by Rustavi-2 TV and
other major Georgian networks, Saakashvili described the state of
the country as his government found it when it came to power over
a year ago. It was, he said, “disintegrated” and “demoralized”, a
country where people had been lied to by the government, a country
where human rights were trampled on and where “not a single tank had
enough ammunition for one hour in battle”.

He went on to say that Georgia had now already become a “proper state”,
but added that the past year was just a beginning. He listed successes
such as the government clearing salary and pension arrears and raising
public sector wages.

Saakashvili paid tribute to the “real heroes” who had made this
possible. He picked out the Financial Police for their successes in
tackling smuggling despite tough opposition, protesters who stood
up to the government of deposed Ajarian leader Aslan Abashidze,
the new police patrol force, which had “won the trust of the people”
and an officer who led an operation to break up a criminal gang in
the northwestern province of Svaneti.

He praised teachers who had been teaching Georgian to the country’s
ethnic minorities, the armed forces, Georgia’s first female military
instructor and reserve force volunteers, among them MPs. He also
referred to Georgia’s participation in “international antiterrorist
operations”.

Saakashvili then moved on to economic issues and said that
privatization would allow the state to make the best use of its
property. He said the revenue would be spent on capital investment
in the energy sector and education.

According to Saakashvili, “thousands” of Georgian emigres have begun
returning to the country.

Saakashvili said that a major priority for this year would be the
creation of jobs in tourism, service industries and agriculture. The
state would help this process by investing in infrastructure. Further
reforms will take place in education, the justice system and local
government. Although Georgia is not prepared to decentralize power
completely, Saakashvili said, local authority heads should be elected,
starting from next year.

The number of MPs in parliament would be reduced to 150, but the mixed
proportional and majoritarian system would be retained. Saakashvili
said he was pleased that for the first time in years MPs had not
punched each other in parliament.

Moving on to foreign policy, Saakashvili said that Georgia’s
relationships with Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkey were “idyllic”. As
for Russia, problems remain but they must be resolved. He said that
compromise was a “two-way street” and that he is prepared to go
to Russia to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin to resolve the
outstanding issues. Priorities would remain a European orientation
and the removal of foreign bases from Georgia.

He stressed the importance of creating an inclusive society for ethnic
minorities, guaranteeing them education and jobs.

He said that the international community should be “ashamed” that an
ethnic Ossetian man who used to organize holidays for South Ossetian
children on Georgia’s Black Sea coast remained imprisoned by the
separatist authorities.

He ended by praising the efforts of MPs and ministers, particularly
Zurab Noghaideli, who has been nominated as prime minister.

Among the honorary guests who were in parliament during Saakashvili’s
50-minute speech were late Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania’s wife,
mother and three children.

HIS HOLINESS ARAM I ANNOUNCES 2005 THE YEAR OF THE 90TH ANNIVERSARY

OF THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

Antelias, Lebanon – On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the Armenian
Genocide, an encyclical by His Holiness Aram I was read during the holy mass
held on Sunday the 6th of February in the St. Gregory the Illuminator
Cathedral. In the encyclical, read by Bishop Nareg Alemezian, the Catholicos
of Cilicia announced 2005 to be the year of the 90th anniversary of the
Armenian Genocide.

Aram I points out in the encyclical that the Catholicosate of Cilicia has
itself witnessed and lived the massacres its people, the Armenians, were
subjected to. For 90 years, the Catholicosate “helped provide the physical
and psychological needs of the Armenians forced away from their land, played
a crucial role in the formation of the Armenian communities worldwide, built
churches and schools, spread spiritual, moral and cultural values, and
became a stanch defender of its people’s rights,” he says in the encyclical
.

His Holiness Aram I adds that with renewed faith and firmness the
Catholicosate today demands justice for the Armenians from the world.

The Pontiff also calls on the Armenian people to embrace the message of the
90th anniversary with a united spirit, to commemorate the anniversary
appropriately, based on the circumstances and situation of each community,
to regard it as a reason for strengthening the struggle for justice and,
finally, to organize pilgrimages to Der Zor, the constant reminder of the
Armenians’ struggle for survival.

On the same day, the encyclical was also read in all the Dioceses of the
Catholicosate of Cilicia.
