Holt Plays it Safe in Vegas; Martirosyan Shines

By Jake Donovan

It’s become painfully obvious that the term "win today, look good the
next time" is no longer in Kendall Holt’s repertoire, simply because
he’s not capable of doing both in the same fight.

Such was painfully evident in Thursday’s VERSUS-televised main event
in Las Vegas, as a spirited undercard loaded with knockouts was
dampened by Holt’s methodical 10-round decision win over Ben Tackie.

The bout was Holt’s first since his controversial loss against
Ricardo Torres last summer in Barranquilla, Colombia. In that fight,
he effectively mixed boxing and brawling through ten rounds,
including a hard knockdown midway through, but ran into trouble late
in the fight before serving as the victim of a highly questionable
stoppage.

Against Tackie, Holt made certain to not allow history to repeat
itself. The Patterson, NJ product came into the ring sporting a
replica jersey of close friend and New York Giants running back
Brandon Jacobs, who is known for his explosive power and ability to
move a pile the moment he lowers his head and takes a handoff.
However, Holt’s homage to his Super Bowl winning friend did not spill
over into the ring.

It was the same pattern throughout the fight. Holt was effective his
jab and mixed in an occasional power shot, but for the most part
played keep away against a plodding and badly faded version of
Tackie. Holt was never in danger of getting chin-checked, but refused
to deviate from the script, settling for a steady, if excessively
monotonous pace.

Tackie tried his damnest to make a fight out of it in the fifth
round, charging forward and letting his hands go (by his standards,
anyway) after offering very little through the first four rounds.
Holt responded by spending the entire round circling the ring, a
tactic which drew excessive boos from the ballroom crowd.

The jeering must’ve struck a chord with Holt, who came out purposeful
in the sixth. With his own corner pleading to pick up the pace, Holt
landed his first combination of the fight, a 1-2 that momentarily
rocked the iron-chinned Tackie. Holt remained on the offensive but
lost his own mouthpiece somewhere along the way, leading to a brief
timeout after a lull in the action.

That would be the end of Kendall the entertainer, as the junior
welterweight contender reverted to fighting in reverse for the
remainder of the fight. Tackie followed him around the ring, looking
for openings that never presented itself. The closest to any drama
occurring came in the ninth round, when Tackie flopped to the floor
following a brief clinch. Tackie sold referee Robert Byrd on the idea
that he was hit with a low blow, causing Byrd to call time-out and
issue a warning to Holt.

No problem, said Holt, who spent the rest of the fight playing keep
away on the outside, and clinching anytime Tackie came within
punching range.

One of the four points of scoring criteria is defense, of which Holt
did a sensational job. Tackie landed a mere 58 punches throughout the
fight, very few of them doing any damage. But this being Vegas, the
fact that the Ghana native kept coming forward throughout was enough
to sell judge CJ Ross on the idea of an even fight, with his inept
scorecard reading 95-95 by night’s end. Dick Houck and Paul Smith
saved a boring fight from also becoming a controversial one, with
their identical cards of 98-92 for Holt a lot closer to reality.

With the win, Holt advances to 23-2 (12KO) but does little to rally
the troops behind his cause for a rematch with Torres or a shot at
any other alphabet titlist. The talented junior welterweight should
manage to stay busy after recently signing a promotional deal with
Top Rank, but is at a point where he’ll have to find a way to
simultaneously win and look good.

Tackie falls to 29-9-1 (17KO) with the loss, his third straight. Now
5-6-1 in his last 12 bouts and no longer able to let his hands go,
the 34-year old is clearly at the end of his career.

No such problems in the career of 21-year old Vanes "Nightmare"
Martirosyan, as things are just getting started for the undefeated
junior middleweight prospect and 2004 US Olympian. While the main
event left the crowd booing throughout, Martirosyan gave ’em plenty
of reason to cheer with a three-round beatdown of Michi Munoz in the
televised co-feature.

The brash Armenian, now residing in Glendale, California, was on the
attack early and often throughout, scoring three knockdowns in the
brief yet punishing affair. A counter left hand put Munoz on the deck
early in the opening round, drawing chants of "Va-Nes" from the
crowd, which came alive anytime Martirosyan had his Mexican foe in
any trouble.

Martirosyan remained on the attack in round two, landing several
1-2’s upstairs while keeping Munoz within punching range throughout.
Munoz managed to stay on his feet throughout the round, but was
forced to take a knee midway through the third after taking one right
hand too many. He beat referee Kenny Bayliss’ mandatory eight count,
but would’ve been better served to remain on the canvas. Martirosyan
teed off on the Mexican before forcing him to a knee for the round’s
second knockdown, this time with Bayliss immediately waving off the
bout.

The official time was 2:20 of round three.

Martirosyan improves to 19-0 (13KO), already registering his second
win of 2008 and scheduled to return in late March. Munoz won’t fight
for a while, suffering a broken nose in addition to the first
stoppage loss of his career, both of which earns him a trip to the
medical suspension list. He falls to 20-2 (13KO) with the loss,
snapping a three-fight win streak.

A pair of Vegas-based prospects looked impressive in separate
knockout wins.

Alex Mercado made it 4 KO’s in as many fights, systematically
breaking down Jose Manuel Garcia (3-3, 1KO) in the third round of
their bantamweight swing bout. Mercardo scored knockdowns in each of
the first two rounds before referee Robert Byrd mercifully halted the
bout early in the third round.

The walkout bout barely provided enough time for the crowd to get up
from their chairs, never mind file out of the arena. Angel Flores
(9-2, 3KO) took out Walberto Gaxiola (4-5, 3KO) a mere 35 seconds
into their scheduled four round junior welterweight bout. A single
left hook to the liver caused Gaxiola to collapse to the canvas,
rolling around in agony as the bout was waved off without a count.

The show was presented by Top Rank, Inc.

Blaming Russia for Karabakh conflict unfair
08.02.2008 17:15 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ `I strongly object to the opinion
that the Nagorno Karabakh conflict was provoked by
Russia with the purpose of exerting pressure on
Armenia and Azerbaijan,’ said Ara Abrahamyan,
President of the Union of Armenians of Russia. `We all
know that it was conflict of interests from the very
beginning. Armenians of Nagorno Karabakh always
opposed to being annexed to Azerbaijan,’ he said.

`Karabakh never belonged to Azerbaijan. It was defined
as a disputable territory by the League of Nations.
This conflict has its logic and history. It is unjust
to blame Russia for it,’ Mr Abrahamyan said, Day.az
reports.

Sargsyan leads in presidential election campaign – sociologists

SARGSYAN LEADS IN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION CAMPAIGN – SOCIOLOGISTS

Sociologists predict the victory of Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan in
the Armenian presidential election on February 19."Prime Minister
Serzh Sargsyan enjoys the steady support of 55-60% of voters, which
is a indication of victory in the first round of the election,"
Sociometer Independent Sociological Center Director Agaron Adibekian
said in comments on six polls conducted by his company.

The three top candidates are Sargsyan; Orinats Erkir (Country of Law)
opposition party leader and ex-speaker Artur Bagdasarian (13%); and
Armenian first president Levon Ter-Petrossian (11%), Adibekian told a
Wednesday press conference in Yerevan.

The other six candidates will receive less than 5% of the votes, he
said.

Armenians would prefer Bagdasarian as the common candidate of the
opposition but the opposition is more likely to unite around Ter-
Petrossian, the researcher said.

The British company Populus, which also held a poll in Armenia, said
that Sargsyan was the leading candidate.

A total of 50.7% of the respondents supported Sargsyan, company
founder and director Andrew Cooper told the press conference.

He said, 13.4% of the respondents supported Bagdasarian and 12.6%
gave preference to Ter-Petrossian.

SHOGHAKEN ENSEMBLE "Music From Armenia" Traditional Crossroads

Traditional Crossroads

WEEKEND; Pg. WE16

ARMENIAN MUSIC IS neither precisely Eastern nor Western, but in the
Soviet era it was tugged toward Moscow’s symphonic tastes. Since
1991, the Shoghaken Ensemble has been pulling the other way,
exploring traditional forms and instruments.

"Music From Armenia," the group’s latest album, includes dance tunes,
a cappella ballads and instrumental solos by Gevorg Dabaghyan,
Shoghaken’s founder and a master of the duduk (a double-reed pipe).
Generally more reminiscent of Turkish than Persian styles, the pieces
can be kinetic yet courtly. With two singers and seven
instrumentalists, the troupe is versatile but never overstated. Its
sound is spare and airy, with each musical element featured in turn.
A fine example is the captivating "Melodies of Karabagh," which opens
with breathy duduk, segues into a jiglike passage and ultimately
spotlights all the players.

According to some legends, Armenia was the site of the Garden of
Eden, which explains the title of Dabaghyan’s CD "Lost Songs From
Eden." The album reclaims a few of the thousands of folk melodies
collected a century ago by musicologist Komitas, as performed by
Dabaghyan. Although Dabaghyan is joined by a string quartet, the
music retains its pastoral charm. A student of Turkish and Kurdish
music as well as Armenian, Komitas was no purist, and the range of
the tunes he collected can be heard in these 14 examples. Much of the
music is plaintive and has an Eastern modality, as illustrated by the
lovely "Hov Areq, Sarer Jan." But there are also a few dance numbers,
notably "Shakhkr-Shukhkr," that could slip right into a Celtic band’s
repertoire.

Composer Khachatur Avetisyan, who died in 1996, was also an advocate
of Armenian folk music. He wrote often for the kanun, a form of
zither played in the Shoghaken Ensemble by Karine Hovhannisyan. A
showcase for both the composer and the musician, "Classical Music for
the Armenian Kanun" includes an Avetisyan concerto for kanun and
orchestra and several shorter pieces (including some collected by
Komitas). If the concerto is a solid but predictable exercise in
yoking together folk and symphonic music, some of the shorter pieces
are outstanding. The album’s most impressive introduction to the
kanun’s metallic sound is "Shalako," a spirited Georgian dance that
demonstrates just how briskly Hovhannisyan’s fingers can move.

leader of the National Solidarity Party], and 0.6 per cent for Arman
Melikyan[Armenian presidential candidate, former aide to the
president of the unrecognized republic of Nagornyy Karabakh].

At a meeting with journalists today, held to announce the results of
the opinion poll, the founding director of thePopulus, Andrew Cooper,
said that the average statistics error in the opinion poll was 2.6
per cent. All informationobtained during the opinion poll was
analysed and processes by Andrew Cooper’s team in London.

A total of 42 per cent of the respondents believe that their
condition and the condition of their families willimprove this year,
51 per cent expect an improvement of Armenia’s general condition.

Polls regarding provisions of the candidates’ election manifestos

which candidate will best strengthen Armenia’s economy, 41 per cent
of the respondents named Serzh Sargsyan, 26 per cent Artur
Baghdasaryan, 17 per cent Vahan Hovhannesyan and Artashes Geghamyan,
and 15 per cent Levon Ter-Petrosyan.

for Artur Baghdasaryan, and 14 per cent for Vahan Hovhannesyan and
LevonTer-Petrosyan.

Based on a comprehensive analysis of the poll results, Andrew Cooper
believes that out of the nine candidates SerzhSargsyan is an obvious
leader with a big advantage over others.

[Andrew Cooper, the founding director of the Populus, in English with
Armenian voice-over, speaking at a newsconference] Serzh Sargsyan has
an advantage in all political issues over other candidates. He has a
big – 15-per-centadvantage – in the economic issues, and a
20-per-cent advantage in key security issues. These facts are a basis
tobelieve that Serzh Sargsyan has a great advantage in the
presidential election. Serzh Sargsyan’s rating exceeds theratings of
other candidates taken together. Taking into consideration the fact
that less than two weeks are left tillthe election, this advantage is
unbeatable.

[Correspondent] Compared to all other candidates, Serzh Sargsyan in
essence has an advantage in all key nationalissues: the issue of
Artsakh [Nagornyy Karabakh] 40 per cent, a threat of war 32 per cent,
recognition of the genocide21 per cent, roads and infrastructure 22
per cent, and social welfare and corruption 8 per cent [sentence as

Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaktsutyun 41.74 points, the National
Unity Party 34.04 points, the People’s Party of Armenia [led by
StepanDemirchyan who supports Ter-Petrosyan in the election] 32.57
points, and the People’s Party 32.21 points.

Incidentally, the youth were more optimistic among the respondents. A
total of 61 per cent of the respondents agedbetween 18 and 34 believe
that next year will be successful for Armenia; 54 per cent of the
respondents of this agegroup expect an improvement in their lives and
the lives of their families; 57 per cent of the respondents aged

YOUTH INTERESTED IN PRE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN
[01:26 pm] 08 February, 2008

Armenia’s youth turn out to be interested in the
upcoming presidential election but they avoid sharing
an opinion.

`Sometimes I watch the campaign as my family members
are interested in it,’ 19-year-old Anahit said.

`But there are more interesting TV programmes to watch
instead of the boring campaign,’ her friend said.

A Pedagogical University student says that besides
watching the campaign he discusses the latest themes
with his friends on the telephone.

`I am not a bit interested in the campaign. No matter
who comes to power he won’t better our lives,’ said a
student from Vardenis and added laughingly, `I am
ready to vote for a candidate who will rent a flat for
me in the capital. I am even ready `to dance to his
tune.’

26-year-old Vardan urged the Armenian youth to
participate in the electoral processes. `I am
accredited as an observer and I won’t let any local
authority to rig the presidential election like the
parliamentary one,’ he said.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia and Turkey
are planning to launch Black Sea Ring Highway project supposing
ferry communication, Russian Transport Minister Igor Levitin
said. Kavkaz-Kerch (Ukraine) and Kavkaz-Poti (Georgia) are functioning.

The project includes establishment of ferry communication with Varna
(Bulgaria) and Istanbul (Turkey).

According to the Minister, the Black Sea Ring Highway project is
supposed to be implemented in 2010-2015.

The cargo traffic will raise from 2.000.000 to some 5.000.000 tons. In
all, 12 ferries will be put into operation. "We don’t think there can
be problems with Georgia except for some tariff issues. Anyway, Georgia
can’t block the cargo pass," Mr Levitin said, Georgia Online reports.
