Istanbul-APA. Trial on the murder of Armenian-published Agos
newspaper’s editor Hrant Dink was continued in Istanbul on Monday. APA
quotes the Turkish news agencies as saying that Ogun Samast and Erhan
Tuncel accused in the murder gave funny testimony in the court.

Other charged Yasin Hayal’s lawyer Fuad Turgut asked questions to
Samast and Tuncel at the process held publicly for the first time. He
reminded Tuncel about his frequently visits to his girlfriend in
Eskishehir and asked she was Israeli or not. Tuncel was angry and said:
"I don’t answer this question because it is against our traditions. Do
I ask you about your wife?" Then he said that his girlfriend was a
daughter of Israeli President. Lawyer Turgut said Samast received
two phone calls in front of the Agos newspaper’s office and one
of the calls was from the former Zaman reporter and present Agos
editor-in-chief Etienne Mahchupian. At this time Samast replied:
"No, Jennifer Lopez called me that time". Hayal leaving the court
room under the police convoy cried: "Long live Great Union Party!"

A Turkish court in Istanbul began on Monday the first open hearing
of Turkish-Armenian journalist’s assassination case.

This is the sixth hearing at the Istanbul Criminal Court regarding
the case of assassination of Hrant Dink, the editor-in-chief of
Turkish-Armenian weekly Agos.

Monday’s hearing is the first one to be open to the press and other
people who want to observe it. The former five sessions were closed
to the press since suspect O.S. was a juvenile.

Nineteen suspects, eight of whom are in prison, are tried in the case.

A member of European Parliament of Turkish origin said before the
hearing that those who were countering racism and discrimination were
standing beside each other today.

"The democratic, secular, bright and European Turkey case, backed by
Hrant, is not over yet," parliamentarian Cem Ozdemir said.

Ozdemir also said that those who killed Hrant Dink were those who
did not want such a Turkey.

Dink was shot dead outside the offices of his Agos newspaper in
Istanbul in January, 2007. Police arrested the gunman and a suspected
associate who was identified as Yasin Hayal.

The trial began in July 2007. Prosecutors have asked for a prison
term of 18 years up to 24 years for Dink’s assassin, and lifetime
sentences for two key suspects, Erhan Tuncel and Yasin Hayal, for
inciting to the murder.

The negotiations on Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement are going on
based on three fundamental principles reflected in Helsinki Final
Act, RA Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan said at yesterday’s
press-conference responding to ArmInfo’s question saying that the
principle of territorial integrity is lately manipulated. He also
said that the position of the world community, of the cochairmen,
in particular, apparently manifested during the voting on UN GA
Resolution initiated by Azerbaijan. ‘The reason is in one-sidedness
of the Resolution which says only about the territorial integrity’,
the minister recalled and added that the negotiations on Nagorno
Karabakh conflict are going on today on the basis of the principles of
OSCE Helsinki Final Act – Article 2 which indicates non-use of force,
Article 4 which indicates the territorial integrity and Article 8,
indicating the people’s right for self-determination.

The fact that the leaders of the `pan-national’ movement are not very
attentive towards their words is not a secret.

For the last one-week these people terrify us saying that the
demonstration of July 4 will be `decisive’.

But the meeting hold yesterday in front of Matenadaran was not only far
from being decisive or continuous, but the participants of the meeting
also showed that their leader is groping in vagueness.

By the way the number of the participants was significantly lesser as
compared with the meeting hold on July 20.

And there was no livelihood on the stage. The list of the speeches
displayed that Levon’s companions-in-arm are far not as enthusiastic as
they used to be. The same way as during the previous meeting, leader of
`Heritage’ party Raffi Hovhannisyan didn’t participate in the
`decisive’. And though usually member of `Heritage’ party Vardan
Khachatryan used to deliver a speech, this time the latter disappointed
the gathered ones. He didn’t even approach the microphone.

Instead they brought the representative of `Heritage’ party in CEC Zoya
Tadevosyan with them. The latter intimidated the administration by
nominating her candidacy for the elections of the governor of Arabkir
community in September. When she finished her speech she left
arm-in-arm with Vardan.

Leader of People’s Party of Armenia Stepan Demirchyan also didn’t
deliver a speech. What can we do, this person has nothing to say. Vice
Chairman of the People’s Party of Armenia Grigor Harutyunyan filled the
gap, who fortunately has something to say: `Struggle, Struggle to the
end. We don’t have any other option.’

It can seem incredible but believe me; leader of `Hnchakyan’ party
Lyudmila Sargsyan also didn’t deliver a speech. It is a very bad sign
because without the thunderous speeches delivered by Lyuda the movement
is somewhat tasteless.

But of course there was someone to replace her. A young man in a
T-shirt with an inscription `Now’ came to the microphone and started to
sing in a very bad voice. His voice was so bad that Suren Surenyants
couldn’t stand it and he immediately neutralized the activist.

There was a feeling that after being released from prison Jirair
Sefilyan won’t come down from the demonstration-stage. But yesterday he
was following the process of the demonstration as a simple participant.
To cut it short only the activists of Armenian Pan National Movement
delivered speeches yesterday.

Leader of `Hanrapetutyun’ party was the only `weighty’ leader to
deliver a speech during yesterday’s meeting. Aram Sargsyan said that he
would like to speak about Karabakh. After speaking a little he came to
a conclusion. `Just imagine: every morning the President of Azerbaijan
gets up and looks at oil prices in the international market, and he
sees that his country and he himself have become richer by 10%. And the
President of Armenia looks at the same prices and sees that his country
and he himself have become poorer by 10%.’

Davit Shahnazaryan repeated the same things that he said in the press
clubs last week. But, nonetheless, the coordinator of the revolutionary
movement in the Northern Avenue said something new: `The Northern
Avenue has turned into the never-abating steeple of the pan-national
movement.’

And when Levon Zurabyan’s turn came, who was going to reveal the
tactics of the movement something went wrong with the microphone. But
the problem was immediately solved and the participants started to
listen to what Zurabyan was going to say: `Unfortunately we can’t
completely reveal our tactics. Because whatever we tell you immediately
turns into the possession of the authorities. This means we must hide
certain things to maintain the effect of unexpectedness.’ Zurabyan
announced.

This means to butcher the activists with a bad knife. But the member of
the Armenian Pan National Movement was not that cruel and he decided to
reveal certain details.

Zurabyan said that he is planning to hold a `fiery’ demonstration on
August 1 and before that he will continue his struggle by `staying in
the street’. This means from today they are starting a 24-hour sit-in,
in Northern Avenue. Everything is clear; LTP is going on holiday for 25
days. This is called `an effect of unexpectedness’.

The speech delivered by the leader concluded the demonstration. As a
topic he chose `the tight balance of Robert Kocharyan’s activity’.
Before Robert Kocharyan’s end of office LTP had already managed to
label him a `tyrant’.

After which he was doing his best to set Serge Sargsyan against his
previous. If by now he was trying to gain Serge Sargsyan’s favor, by
simply exhorting him to demarcate himself from `March 1′, yesterday he
showed the way how the acting President can demarcate himself from `the
heritage left by Kocharyan’.

Later he ordered to dismiss certain `detestable people’ and intimidated
that if RA President doesn’t fulfill his demand, from August 1 the
movement will demand Serge Sargsyan’s resignation.

But I wonder what have these people been doing beginning from February
20, by demanding to hold extraordinary elections.

No, really the leader of the revolution really needs rest. Of course 25
days is not too much but his brains will refresh and during the `fiery’
meeting in August 1 he will come out with a new demand. For example he
will demand to file a case against R. Kocharyan in Hague Court.

Of course he has already spoken about it many times, but on August 25

the demand will sound in a new form ` more decisively, sharply and
furiously.

Four new heritage sites added to UNESCO list

2008-07-07 12:31:29

QUEBEC CITY, Canada, July 6 (Xinhua) — UNESCO’s World Heritage
Committee Sunday added four new sites to its heritage list, including
Tulou, the unique residential architecture of Fujian Province in
southeastern China.

The remaining three sites inscribed Sunday afternoon local time by
the 21-member heritage committee which is currently meeting in Quebec
City, are a former slave hideout in Mauritius, an archeological site
in Saudi Arabia and monasteries in Iran.

Fujian Tulou comprises 46 earthen houses constructed between the
12th and 20th centuries. Each has several stories, built for entire
clans and sheltering up to 800 people.

During the 18th and early 19th centuries, runaway slaves sought
shelter on the mountain of Le Morne, which juts out into the Indian
Ocean in south-west Mauritius, where they formed small
settlements. The mountain became a symbol of the slaves’ search for
freedom, as well as their suffering and sacrifice.

Al-Hijr, or Madain Salih, is the first Saudi Arabian site to be
added to the World Heritage List. As the largest conserved site of the
civilization of the Nabataeans south of Petra in Jordan, it features
over 100 tombs dating back from the 1st century BC to the1st century
AD.

The Armenian Monastic Ensembles in northeastern Iran were a major
hub for the dissemination of the Armenian culture into Azerbaijan and
Persia. The site comprises three monastic ensembles, with the oldest
edifice dating back to the 7th century.

The four new entries bring UNESCO’s World Heritage List to 855
sites in more than 140 countries around the world.

The World Heritage Committee’s annual meeting is scheduled to wrap
up on July 10.

Armenian opposition turn up heat on president

Thousands of opposition supporters have taken to the streets in the
Armenian capital, Yerevan calling for the resignation of President
Serzh Sarksyan and new elections.

They accuse the authorities of rigging the ballot in February that
brought him to power. Sarksyan was the candidate chosen by the then
outgoing president, Robert Kocharyan, to succeed him.

Since then tensions have been high in the Caucusas nation, sometimes
erupting into violence. Nine people died in clashes between protesters
and the army in March. The opposition say they intend to escalate
their campaign to force Sarksyan to resign.

At a meeting ahead of today’s rally opposition leader Levon
Ter-Petrosyan urged people to stage mass-meetings, pickets and
sit-ins. Ter-Petroysan, a former president himself, was placed under
house-arrest after February’s vote but was later released.

The Fantastic Youth and Children’s International Theatrical Festival
held on June 19-22 in the city of Rudolstadt, Germany, started with
the tale-performance "Ofelia Shadows Theater" of Armenian Aestheticism
National Center’s Small Theater.

As performance producer Vahan Badalian said at the July 3 press
conference, 9 out of 40 presented performances had been selected for
the festival, including the Armenian one. Besides Armenia, companies
of actors from Poland, Russia, Croatia also took part in the festival.

For the purpose of smoothing over the language problem the Armenian
performance’s dialogues were in Armenian and narrative parts in German.

According to V. Badalian, they intend to play the performance in the
same way in English, French, and Russian.

"German press has repeatedly touched upon our performance mentioning
that the Armenian company of actors played brilliantly in the
festival," V.

Badalian said. Though there were no prizes in the festival, the
advantage of the Armenian performance was noticed by both the
participants and the spectators, as a result of which the Small
Theater’s actors were also invited to Ireland and Macedonia.

"Childrens’ theaters’ performances are often perceived not seriously in
society as an individual great event. However, we can state that though
the actors are aged 10-15, they play their parts very professionally
and with great devotion receiving a warm welcome by society," he added.
