YEREVAN, November 6. /ARKA/. Armenia’s withdrawal from the EAEU, absent other factors, could in itself lead to a slowdown in economic growth by 0.65 percentage points, stated RA Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan.

At a briefing on Friday, the minister explained that while the economy was expected to grow by 6.6%, if it leaves the EAEU, growth would be around 6%, absent other factors. He added that there are other factors that could slow economic growth to 5%.

“At the same time, there will also be positive results. In reality, there will be approximately four to five negative factors and another four to five positive ones, which will ultimately lead to a certain effect,” Papoyan said, refraining from providing specifics.

The Armenian authorities have repeatedly stated their intention to maintain their membership in the EAEU as long as it is compatible with rapprochement with the European Union.

On Armenia’s plans for rapprochement with the EU

In the spring, Armenia adopted a law initiating the country’s accession process to the European Union. The document itself does not constitute a formal application for membership.

In December 2025, Armenia and the EU approved a new strategic partnership agenda, and the first Armenia-EU summit was held in May 2026.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has stated that the EU membership application process could begin in 2027–2028.
