The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has stated that, despite the steps taken by the US President Donald Trump’s administration to ease restrictions on Russian energy suppliers, the European Union does not intend to cancel the energy sanctions applied against Russia until the end of the conflict in Ukraine.
“In the context of the current discussions, I want to express myself very clearly. these sanctions will remain in force until Russia stops the war,” von der Leyen said in a speech at the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday.
This statement of the head of the European Commission was made in the background of the change in Washington’s position regarding restrictions against the Russian energy sector. The Trump administration earlier eased the sanctions regime on Russian diesel supplies and suspended a number of new restrictions against Russia.
