The Iranian and Armenian foreign ministers discuss key bilateral, regional and international issues.

The foreign ministers of Iran and Armenia have held talks about key bilateral, regional and international issues.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Armenian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Ararat Mirzoyan discussed the most important issues regarding mutual relations and regional and international developments during an expanded-format meeting in Tehran on Monday, IRNA reported.

Armenia’s state news agency Armenpress also said that the two ministers had earlier held one-on-one talks.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Saturday that Mirzoyan’s visit comes as part of ongoing consultations between the two countries aimed at expanding bilateral ties and strengthening regional peace and security.

Baghaei added that the Armenian foreign minister is scheduled to meet with senior Iranian officials to discuss ways of developing bilateral cooperation and regional cooperation in the South Caucasus.

During the meeting, Araghchi pointed to the longstanding bonds between the Iranian and Armenian peoples and said Tehran’s approach is based on expanding relations with its neighbors, particularly in the Caucasus and Central Asia.

He said Iran attaches special importance to its friendly and steadily growing relations with Armenia, adding that expanding ties and interactions with countries in the Caucasus and Central Asia can help guarantee regional peace and security and promote economic growth and prosperity.

He outlined Iran’s position on the importance of peace and stability in the Caucasus and welcomed the continued positive trend in relations and interactions between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The top Iranian diplomat expressed the country’s readiness to continue multilateral talks and cooperation, including within the 3+3 regional format, to help consolidate the peace process and strengthen regional cooperation.

Araghchi also briefed his Armenian counterpart on developments in West Asia, particularly in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, and the “dangerous and destructive” consequences of the US-Israeli military aggression against Iran.

He noted that the US-Israeli attacks were the root cause of insecurity affecting commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has firmly defended and will continue to defend its national interests and security, while at the same time never hesitating to use diplomatic means to prevent the escalation of tensions,” Araghchi pointed out.

Back in August, speaking in a phone conversation with Araghchi, Mirzoyan said Yerevan prioritizes maintaining friendly and good-neighborly relations with Tehran based on mutual interests.

He underscored that Armenia is Iran’s friendly and neighboring country, and places great value on bilateral relations.
