It can be hard for diaspora communities to stay connected – or at least feel like they’re staying connected.
For those who don’t know, these are groups of people who live outside their ancestral or shared country of origin, often while maintaining strong cultural, familial, and linguistic ties to the place where they’re from.
Due to the nature of being in a dispersed community, it’s difficult to maintain those connections in the same way as you would if everyone lived in the same place, but that’s not to say it’s impossible.
On the contrary, due to the rise of technology and the interactive online platforms that have resulted from it, the process and experience of connecting has improved – you just need to know where to look.
Social Media Communities
For starters, social media isn’t just for sharing photos or scrolling through short-form videos. For diaspora communities, it can effectively function as a virtual meeting place.
Facebook Groups, WhatsApp groups, Reddit communities – all of these platforms have worked to bring people together and create spaces where shared backgrounds and experiences can be discussed openly.
Even if you can’t find one that works for you, the process of creating a Facebook Group, for instance, is relatively straightforward, with the group starting with something as simple as a handful of people before growing into a much broader network.
Gaming and Virtual Social Spaces
If gaming or virtual socializing is more of your thing, you can also find a comprehensive social gaming resource – something that brings together interactive experiences and opportunities to connect with other players.
It might not sound conventional, but in 2026, gaming has become far more than simply sitting down to play a game; for many people, it’s become a genuine social environment where friendships and communities can form regardless of geographical distance, and that makes it a great option if you’re looking for something a little more interactive.
Video and Livestreaming Platforms
Video and livestreaming platforms like YouTube or Twitch are equally useful for diaspora communities, particularly when it comes to sharing culture and experiences.
A livestreamed cultural celebration or even a simple creator-led video can give people a way to experience aspects of their heritage together, rather than simply reading about them or discussing them in a text-based group.
Again, you could even start your own channel, building an audience around your shared background and creating a welcoming space where people can engage.
Dating Platforms
A lot of people don’t seem to realize that dating platforms aren’t just for dating. On the contrary, they can be a great way to meet and talk with people who share your cultural background or language, effectively expanding your social circle and finding others who understand the particular experience of living away from an ancestral home.
If dating is something you’re looking for, that shared cultural understanding can also be a valuable starting point for building a strong relationship, giving you something to connect over and talk about right off the bat – no need for icebreakers!
Diaspora-focused Websites and Apps
Lastly, you can just cut to the chase. Across the internet, there are various diaspora-focused websites and apps, each one designed to bring people together and give them a dedicated space to connect and communicate.
These can range from community forums and cultural networks to apps offering local news, events, language resources, and even opportunities to meet other members.
Indeed, the growing importance of these digital spaces is also being recognized in separate research, with a recent initiative examining the Armenian diaspora identifying these sorts of digital spaces as areas for exploring identity and mobilization.
The advantage of this is that you don’t have to sift through a much broader social network to find the people you’re looking for. Everything is built around a shared identity or experience, and that makes it far easier to find the relevant communities and form connections with people that might last a lifetime.
