Canada and the United States have stepped up trade negotiations in an effort to reach an agreement before new U.S. tariffs are due to take effect on August 19. The talks are continuing in Washington, Bloomberg reports.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration has threatened to impose additional 50% tariffs on around $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. The measures apply in particular to cars, dairy products and alcoholic beverages and, according to documents released by the White House, are due to take effect on August 19.

Canada is seeking an easing of existing U.S. tariffs, including those imposed on steel and aluminium. In return, Washington is demanding that Ottawa review restrictions imposed on U.S. cars, dairy products and alcoholic beverages.

The latest U.S. proposal provides for reductions in some tariffs, but has fallen short of the Canadian side’s expectations. Negotiations are continuing.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
