Armenia continues to strive for absolute energy independence, while simultaneously working towards unblocking regional infrastructure.

RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan commented on the visits of Azerbaijani specialists to Armenia and responded to Baku’s latest statements regarding the Metsamor nuclear power plant and energy trade.

In a conversation with journalists after the government session on August 13, Nikol Pashinyan confirmed that Yerevan and Baku are working bilaterally on infrastructure issues. He recalled the fact of the meetings of experts from the two countries in September 2025 and January 2026. This clarification was followed by the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyevto the statement made on August 11 that within the framework of the TRIPP project, Azerbaijani specialists have already located the installation points of power lines and stations to Nakhichevan on the territory of Armenia.

Referring to Aliyev’s claims that the Metsamor NPP is outdated, represents a regional threat and must be closed, and Azerbaijan can provide Armenia with an energy alternative, the RA Prime Minister emphasized the lack of new agreements regarding the nuclear power plant.

According to him, the dates of operation of the station are clearly fixed by the previously concluded international agreements. At the same time, Pashinyan stressed that Armenia’s strategic priority is to achieve 100 percent energy independence. He also added that due to the intensive construction of artificial intelligence factories in the country, the domestic demand for electricity only tends to increase.
