In Armenia, it is planned to introduce a registration system of IMEI numbers, the purpose of which is to ensure the legal circulation of mobile phones. This is reported by the Government.

The setting is aimed at:

to reduce the circulation of illegally imported mobile phones,

to ensure a level and fair playing field for legal importers;

to protect consumers from phones with fake or altered IMEI numbers;

to introduce a unified database of mobile phone records.

“At the same time, it is important to emphasize that the initiative has nothing to do with the collection or control of citizens’ personal data.

Only the 15-digit IMEI number of the device will be stored in the created database, without any personal data.

Various questions and concerns were raised during public discussions regarding the initiative. Below we present the most frequently voiced opinions and argued clarifications,” the message says.
