During the restoration and cleaning works carried out in the “Amberd Castle” historical and cultural reserve, new, remarkable episodes of medieval history have appeared.
According to the information of the Conservation Service operating under the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of the Republic of Armenia, an almost complete skeleton of a young man was excavated in the outer part of the inner tower wall of the castle, slightly to the east of the center.
According to experts, almost ninety percent of the bones have been preserved. only the fingers are missing, and the individual’s young age has been inferred based on a study of the dentition. Archaeological findings, however, were not limited to human remains.
As a result of the cleaning of the area, fragments of the tama game, the prototype of modern checkers, which are evidences of medieval entertainment, as well as the coin of Queen Tamar, which is of exceptional historical value, were also found.
Currently, excavations and restoration works are ongoing in the historical and cultural reserve, promising to shed new light on the still undiscovered pages of this unique monument of Armenian history.
