The situation at the session of the Constitutional Court in the case of disputing the results of the June 7 parliamentary elections became tense. Aram Orbelyan, a lawyer representing the interests of the opposition, accused Judge Seda Safaryan of political bias because of his questions about Russia’s possible interference.
The reason for the debate during the session of the Supreme Court on June 29 was the judge’s question whether Russia acted in favor of the opposition forces, referring to the harsh statements of high-ranking officials of the Russian Federation.
As the human rights defender explained, the question about the general impact of the actions of foreign states, Russia, China or Iran, would be perfectly acceptable for clarification. Meanwhile, the constant targeting of certain forces and the circulation of political theses directly question the impartiality of the CC judge.
Orbelyan emphasized that such personal interest can directly undermine the objectivity of the final decision and affect the outcome of the case. Referring to the topic of external interference in the electoral processes, the lawyer reminded the main provisions of the application-complaint submitted by the opposition.
“It is clearly recorded in them that the foreign intervention was not theoretical, but practical, carried out at the level of heads of states and international structures, in particular, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen,” said Orbelyan, adding that this Western support was highly targeted and nominal, aimed not at the abstract “European future”, but at specific political figures.
