Azerbaijan’s AzerTelecom has signed a cooperation agreement with Armenia’s Telecom Armenia. According to the official Azerbaijani statement, AzerTelecom will provide Armenia with an internet transit connection, wrote PhD, Turkologist Varuzhan Geghamyan.
“Until more details are available, I do not want to make a definitive statement, but the first question that arises is the following: what guarantees exist that Azerbaijan will not control Armenian internet traffic through this arrangement, and potentially carry out anti-Armenian interventions at a critical moment?
In general, it should be understood that Azerbaijan does not pursue the goal of equal partnership with Armenia. At the core of its policy is a logic of sustained pressure on Armenia aimed at weakening the Armenian state and increasing its dependence. Therefore, approaching this news with optimism is, to put it mildly, naïve,” Geghamyan concluded.
