Armenian high school students have won five bronze medals at the 2nd Open International Biology Olympiad (OIBO), an annual global competition hosted in the Sirius Federal Territory in Sochi, Russia. More than 100 students from 17 countries participated in the competition.
Yerevan State University STEM High School 12th graders Narek Ghazaryan, Mariam Galstyan, and Nane Ananikyan, Heratsi High School 11th grader Edwin Shahinyan and 12th grader Veronika Ohanyan, as well as Gyumri Photon College 11th grader Meri Nikolyan, represented Armenia at the Olympiad, the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports said in a press release.
The team was led by a research associate at the YSU Institute of Biology and instructor at the YSU STEM High School, Syuzan Marutyan. The Olympiad consisted of three stages: theoretical (individual), practical (individual), and project-based (team). Students from the YSU STEM High School and Heratsi High School were awarded bronze medals. At the inaugural International Open Biology Olympiad, Armenia’s team previously secured four bronze medals.
