Vartkes Mahdessian sole candidate for Armenian Cypriots’ parliamentary representative

Nicosia, Cyprus. Vartkes Mahdessian, 76, is the only Armenian Cypriot standing for election as the community’s non-voting representative in the new parliament. He has held the post since 2006 and is set for a fifth term.

Sole candidacy and timeline

Mahdessian has served as the Armenian Cypriot representative in the House since 2006. If no objections to his candidacy are filed by 12.30pm on Thursday, he will be elected for a fifth term.

Will any objections be filed to Mahdessian’s candidacy before the Thursday deadline?

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
