This is an episode of Other Armenias Podcast, hosted by Milena Abrahamyan and Tamar Shirinian. In this episode we talk to independent feminist researcher, Sona Baldrian – who is based in Yerevan, Armenia and who has many years of experience with women’s non-governmental organizations in the country – about the history of Soviet feminisms and especially the legacy left by the revolutionary women known as Bolshevik feminists in the late 1910s until the early 1930s. We delve into the critical work that these feminists accomplished, how it differed from liberal forms of feminism then and now, as well as how the end of state socialism in Armenia and beyond turned back the clock on these massive feminist achievements. A major part of this conversation is also the history of March 8 in the Soviet Union, in Armenia, internationally.
