Armenia – June 20 2022

The United States is willing to continue to cooperate with Russia in facilitating a settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Karen Donfried told Radio Azatutyun.

“The U.S. has continued to say that we support the Minsk Group co-chair process. We continue to believe that it is a very important format, particularly on Nagorno-Karabakh, and it is essential that we keep various formats in play to try to advance peace. And we will continue to do that going forward,” she said.

Donfried also responded to a question about whether she was referring to cooperation with Russia.

“Yes. Russia is a Minsk Group co-chair. France, the U.S. and Russia would continue in that format,” Donfried noted.

She also commented on statements by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who says there is no need for an OSCE MG.

“Azerbaijan has not been supportive of the Minsk Group co-chair process, the United States is,” said Donfried. “We are a participant in that process and we will continue to do so.”

Henrikh Mkhitaryan will have his Inter medical and officially sign his contract on Tuesday next week, according to a report in the Italian media.

As has been reported by Tuttosport, the Armenian midfielder will have a very busy day on Tuesday as he will first go to Humanitas to undergo his medical examinations before heading to Inter.

That is where he will sign his contract that runs for two years and will see him earn €4.5 million per season and he will also receive a signing-on fee of €2 million.

One of the decisive reasons for Henrikh Mkhitaryan choosing Inter rather than extending his deal with AS Roma was the chance to play in the Champions League again, a tournament he has had limited exposure to.

Inter are excited about the multiple different roles that the 33-year-old is able to perform within the midfield. He can be a valuable asset when attacking as well as dictating the tempo.

Film: ‘Sweeping Yerevan’ wins best documentary award at Ramsgate International Film & TV Festival

“Sweeping Yerevan”, a film directed by Nairi Hakhverdi and produced with the financial support of the National Cinema Center of Armenia, won the Best Documentary award at the Ramsgate International Film & TV Festival held in the UK earlier in June.

“The National Cinema Center congratulates the film’s creative team and extends our best wishes for their continued success,” it said in a statement on Friday.

“Sweeping Yerevan” is a poetic observational portrait of Marina, a woman who travels 40 km every night to sweep the streets of Armenia’s capital, Yerevan, dodging cars and putting her life at risk, in order to provide for her blind husband, live-in mother-in-law, unemployed son, and two young children. By day, she mends clothes for clients and works as a janitor at the local music school to cover the remainder of her family’s expenses. With few options for her generation since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Marina nurtures education and musical skills in her children, hoping that they will have a different future from her own.

YEREVAN, JUNE 20, ARMENPRESS. Armenia’s capital city Yerevan is the highest ranking city in the Caucasus region, with a safe margin, according to the Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2022.

Every year StartupBlink publishes the Global Startup Ecosystem Index report, ranking the startup ecosystems of 1000 cities and 100 countries. The purpose is to provide high-quality information about developments.

“It has been a good year for Armenia which has seen a significant improvement by moving 5 spots up to be ranked at 60th globally. It continues to be 1st in the Caucasus region, the 2nd in the region, suggesting Armenia will continue to hold this position in the near future. With Yerevan as Armenia’s only ranked city, the country’s ranking depends greatly on its capital city. In 2022, Yerevan entered the top 250 city ranking globally. Yerevan has seen a major jump, improving by 38 spots to 244th globally. This increase pushed Yerevan up the ladder in Eastern Europe, where it is now ranked 19th, versus 29th in 2021. Yerevan is the highest ranking city in the Caucasus region, with a safe margin”, the report says.

The report notes that “the Armenian ecosystem manages to show true resilience” despite the “restricted land access due to tensions with Turkey and Azerbaijan”.

“The Armenian government has long understood innovation is critical to the future of the country, and resources have been allocated to grow the ecosystem. In 2021, the tech sector in Armenia flourished, with new investments fueling growth.

Armenian startups are built to target the global market from inception due to the small market size of the country. Additionally, the Armenian government does a great job of supporting tech startups. To support foreign investment, Armenia established Free Economic Zones. During the past few years, Armenia made significant progress in reducing bureaucracy and corruption.

While the Armenian startup ecosystems are still in their early stages and the country has work to do to recover from its turbulent past, there is substantial untapped potential waiting to come to the surface”, the report says.
