Police detain Mayor of Goris

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 21, ARMENPRESS. The Mayor of Goris Arush Arushanyan has been detained by police amid a criminal investigation.
“The mayor is detained within the framework of a criminal case,” police told ARMENPRESS.
Police refused to elaborate details from the criminal case, noting that it has been forwarded to the Committee of Investigations. The Committee of Investigations also refused to comment.

‘My decision to visit Syunik not intended to inflame passions’ – Armenian PM says

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 21, ARMENPRESS. Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan has addressed the resdents of Syunik province in a live video on Facebook before arriving to the province.
The PM called on residents of the province not to inflame passions, adding that he is coming to talk with them openly and answer to their questions.
“I regret that my post on the visit to Syunik has inflamed some passions. I hope you will be convinced that my decision to visit Syunik is not intended to inflame passions. I made that decision for showing my respect and appreciation to the Syunik residents. The second important reason is to answer to your questions and give necessary explanations. I have a certain conviction that I will be able to answer to your questions. If I didn’t have such a conviction, I wouldn’t make such a decision. I’m coming to look into your eyes and answer to your questions. This is the purpose of my visit, I ask you, call on you not to inflame passions in this tense situation, I am coming to talk to you. I have obligations before you, before each of you, I am coming to talk about this, I will try to show you that I am fulfilling the duties before you completely”, he said, expressing hope that the conversation with the Syunik residents will take place. “Because we can overcome this situation together. I want to assure you that not a single millimeter land has been conceded from Syunik province. I hope we will talk about this openly so that the information will be complete”, he added.

Artsakh denies reports on surrendering Karmir Shuka village to Azerbaijan

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 21, ARMENPRESS. The authorities of Artsakh are denying media reports claiming that the village of Karmir Shuka has been surrendered to Azerbaijan.
“The information distributed on Facebook regarding Karmir Shuka is fake,” the Artsakh presidential spokesperson Vahram Poghosyan said. “Moreover, a new housing project is planned to take place soon in the village,” he added.

Protesters block Goris-Tatev road in protest of Pashinyan’s expected visit to Syunik

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 21, ARMENPRESS. Residents of the Province of Syunik have blocked the Goris-Tatev road as a sign of protest against Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Pashinyan is expected to arrive in the province to meet with the locals and discuss the border situation, but the residents of the southernmost province intend not to allow the PM to enter their province.
Deputy Mayors of Goris Menua Hovsepyan and Irina Yolyan are among the protesters. The Mayor of the city is detained by police.
A brief scuffle took place between police and some residents who were attempting to exit Goris and join the protesters in blocking the road.
Pashinyan took to social media Monday morning to address the residents of Syunik, noting that he is visiting the province to meet with the locals and speak to them, rather to aggravate the situation.

7 more trucks delivering humanitarian aid from Russia arrive in Artsakh

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 21, ARMENPRESS. 7 more trucks delivering humanitarian aid from Russia have arrived in Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh), the Artsakh State Emergency Service reports.
The humanitarian aid will be distributed to different settlements in Artsakh.
This is the second batch of the humanitarian aid provided by Russia.

COVID-19: Armenia reports 240 new cases, 644 recoveries in one day

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 21, ARMENPRESS. 240 new cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) have been confirmed in Armenia in the past one day, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 154,065, the ministry of healthcare said today.
644 more patients have recovered in one day. The total number of recoveries has reached 133,176.
1009 tests were conducted in the past one day.
26 more patients have died, raising the death toll to 2656.
The number of active cases is 17,579.
The number of patients who had coronavirus but died from other disease has reached 654 (2 new such cases).

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 21, ARMENPRESS. During the visit to Syunik province Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan firstly visited Sarnakunk village.
Commenting on the question about the demarcation works through GPS, the PM said: “It is being done for several times at various ways. I want to assure you that there is no problem in this sense”.
Pashinyan stated that currently a post-shock situation is underway. “We should do everything to stabilize the situation. We should do everything to return our captives and missing in action”, he said.

Police accumulate massive forces in Syunik province amid Pashinyan’s visit
Police have deployed massive forces at the entry to Goris town in Syunik province to prevent citizens from protesting against PM Nikol Pashinyan's scheduled visit to the town. Earlier, the local authorities called on the city residents to shut down the main entry to the town – Syunik gates. According to report by Tert.am, incidents of scuffle between law enforcement officers and demonstrators took place. Some 6-7 buses with security officers are deployed at the scene.
In a Facebook post, Goris Mayor Arushan Arushanyan had called on locals to prevent the entry of the prime minister, 'who gave away the Armenian lands and disrupted the inviolability of Syunik.' Shortly after the call, Arushanyan was arrested.
Goris-Davit Bek road is secure – Defense Minister

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 21, ARMENPRESS. Minister of Defense Vagharshak Harutyunyan says the safety of the Goris-Davit Bek road is guaranteed.
“Russian peacekeeping troops are taking the Goris-Davit Bek road under control. Our border guards are deployed in our territory and are visually supervising this road – ensuring a second-layer security. Our army stands behind our border guards, and an agreement is reached that no troops will be stationed in between our border guards and this road. The same refers to Azerbaijan: the Azeri border troops are under visual supervision, with their troops behind them. Again, no armed units should be in between the border guards and the road there. In this situation the safety of road traffic is guaranteed,” Harutyunyan told Zinuzh media.
