A demand has been submitted by judicial bodies in Turkey to stop the immunity of a number of MPs of the opposition “People’s Republic” (PHP-CHP) and “People’s Democratic” parties (PDP-HDP). According to the website of the Armenian “Akos” newspaper, published in Istanbul, today the appropriate letter of demand was presented to the parliament about 10 members of parliament belonging to the mentioned parties. The source did not specify which body sent it to the parliament.
Among the above-mentioned MPs are Garo Paylan, the Armenian member of parliament from PDP, as well as Meral Dansh Beshtash, Mahmut Hegrul, Ferhat Enju, Ayshe Ajar Basharan, PDP MPs Ozgyur Ozel, Elif Dogan Turkman, and Baresh Yarkadash.
The source reminds that last week a request was submitted to the Mejlis to end the immunity of 51 more MPs from the aforementioned parties.
The legislative change providing for the termination of the immunity of the members of the Mejlis of Turkey was brought to the agenda of the Turkish Parliament by the proposal of the ruling “Justice and Development” Party (AKP-AKP). As a result of the voting, the proposal was accepted with 376 votes in favor, 140 against and 5 abstentions.
This amendment to the law was published in the official newspaper of Turkey (“Resmi Gazete”) and entered into force in 2016. on June 8. With that, an opportunity was created to initiate legal proceedings against 152 Mejlis deputies.
Let’s remind thatat the moment, 10 deputies are in prison in Turkey, including the co-chairs of the pro-Kurdish opposition PDP party Selahattin Demirtas and Figen Yuksekdagh. At the same time, it is known that the detained Figen Yuksekdagh and the deputy from Diyarbakir, Nursel Aydoghan, have had their parliamentary powers suspended.
