ERDOGAN SLAMS POPE FRANCIS OVER COMMENTS ON 1915 ARMENIAN KILLINGS

1915 Armenian killings widely recognised as Genocide by international
community

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has condemned Pope Francis
for describing the killing of an estimated 1.5 million Armenians by
Ottoman Turks as “the first genocide of the 20th century.”

Turkey has consistently denied the killings that began 100 years ago
were genocide and instead claims that those who died were victims of
civil war.

Turkey responded to the Pontiff’s call for the international community
to recogise the killings as genocide by recalling its ambassador to
the Vatican and accusing Francis of spreading hatred and “unfounded
claims.”
