Yerevan /Mediamax/. NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative
for Women, Peace and Security Marriet Schuurman has said in Yerevan
today that the Alliance is going to deepen cooperation with Armenia.

“I am impressed by how Armenia tries to ensure gender equality on
political, managerial and civil society levels. I was happy to see
the cooperation and debate of all the interested structures around
the topic on how to ensure gender equality especially in peace and
security issues”, said Marriet Schuurman at the Information Center
on NATO in Armenia today.

The NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative has noted that
it’s her first visit to Armenia and it is aimed at gaining general
knowledge on Armenia’s expertise and challenges in terms of ensuring
women’s engagement in security and peace building.

“As far as preventing and settling conflicts is concerned, women
and men should be equally engaged. It’s impossible to build peace
without taking into account the opinion of half of the population”,
noted Marriet Schuurman.

The Special Representative has held meetings on these topics at the
Armenian Foreign Ministry and Defense Ministry and has spoken to
civil society representatives.

Marriet Schuurman was especially impressed with her meetings with
female students of the Military Institute after Vazgen Sargsyan and
female associates of the Armenian Defense Ministry.

“I am extremely impressed with my meetings with these women. They
are devoted to security and peace-building both in Armenia and on the
global scale. We should ensure all the necessary conditions so as these
women could fully realize their potential”, noted Marriet Schuurman.

The NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative has noted that
the Armenian governmental structures and civil society representatives
are working in a quite coordinated manner to ensure gender equality.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
