The witness of the Mount Musa Battle and the traditional Harissa
creation, Silvard Atajyan is waiting for her 103rd anniversary in
April impatiently. The Armenian Genocide witness, notwithstanding the
respectable age, has overcome a serious surgery, which was successful.
At first sight it is unbelievable though fact that even at this age
the woman managed to overcome such a serious health problem and get
well with the help of the doctors. At the hospital ward she does not
feel lack of visitors. Surrounded with the love and care of the
members of her family, Silvard Atajyan is waiting for the soonest
recovery and for the return home.

“Grandma is really strong. Five years ago she got an injury in the
left leg, in which a metal structure was placed and the whole weight
of the body fell on her right leg, which in fact did not endure and
was broken years later”, – told the grandson of the Genocide survivor,
Arshavir Atajyan to Armenpress correspondent.

Earlier Armenpress presented the story of the Armenian Genocide
witness, which is as follows:

The Armenian Genocide initiated in the Ottoman Empire during the World
War I in the beginning of the previous century is one of the biggest
crimes against humanity. Advancing the 100th anniversary of the
Armenian Genocide the new project introduced by Armenpress news agency
is dedicated to the story of the eyewitnesses and survivors of the
calamity to prove the world one more time that our demand for the
recognition of the Armenian Genocide is fair and justified. This time
the project is dedicated to the story of 101-year old Silvard Atajyan.

MAY 14, 101-year old Silvard Atajyan living in Armenia is one of the
few witnesses of the events described in renowned novel “The Forty
Days of Musa Dagh” by Austrian author Franz Werfel.

Her family, which comes from Suedia region of Cilicia, was among those
Armenians, which participated in the heroic struggle against the
Turkish slaughterers in 1915. When the local authorities tried to
realize the order to force the Armenians to leave their homes, the
Armenians had made decision to resist and they climbed up the Mount
Musa, where they organized struggle for their self-defense and managed
to throw back the attacks of the Turkish troops 53 days.

Among other things Silvard Atajyan noted: “I climbed up the Mount Musa
along with my sister, mother, and grandmother in 1911. I was three
years old at that time. My father and uncle were soldiers. My father
ordered the mother to take us and climb up the mountain.”

After the 53 days of resistance the family reached Egypt due to a French vessel.

Silvard remembers how a part of the women was at the side of their
husbands and the other part supplied food and arms to the fighters.

“In the evening women usually brought figs, grapes and bread for the
fighters. But little by little our forces expired…”, – the 101-yer-old
woman said with excitement and tears in her eyes. In the memory of
Silvard, notwithstanding her little age, come out the images of the
French ships, bringing assistance to the Armenians. After the 53 days
of resistance the family reached Egypt due to a French vessel.

Harissa has got a historic past for Musa Dagh people

“During the fights my uncle died, who was thrown into the river. That
was the reason my aunts did not eat fish for years after that”, – says
the witness.

After living for five years in Egypt, in 1919 the family of Silvard
returned to the motherland. Then in 1939 they moved to Aleppo and
later, in 1947 – to Yerevan.

“We grew up in Aleppo, where I got married with Hovsep, born in 1911,
who was a colonel. We got a house and came back to Yerevan, from where
we were exiled to Vardenis”, – remembers Silvard, who worked there as
a carpet weaver.

In 1953 the Atajyan family moved from Vardenis to Yerevan and got a
land in the Malatia-Sebastia administrative district, where they have
lived up to now.

The hero of our story states that Harissa is one of the traditional
Musa Dagh dishes and has a historic past. It is mainly prepared for
happy or sad ceremonies. And that is the reason it is made after it is
blessed by a priest and necessarily from sacrificed lamb meat.

Years after touching upon the recognition of the Armenian Genocide,
the 101-year-old Silvard says that she does not lose hope, as living
with hope is characteristic of an Armenian. “I often watch news
programs and tell everybody to watch it too, so that they know what is
happening in the world. I am not educated but my brain works”, –
states the hero of the story half-seriously and half-jokingly, adding
that according to the forecast, she will live for 5 years more.

She is fond of the flowers, which she has planted and cares with her own hands.

“When I got ill, in the hospital I even told my son not to dry my
flowers”, – emphasized the Genocide-atrocities-survived Silvard, who,
using her walking device, showed us all her flowers in the house yard,
the care of which she does not trust anybody.

Today Silvard has 3 sons, one daughter, 7 grandchildren, and 12 great grandsons.

Russian political expert: In both Armenia and Azerbaijan it is the
oppositions rather than the governments that oppose the existing
status quo

by Ashot Safaryan
Saturday, February 7, 14:19

There are a number of actors who are interested in growing tensions in
the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone, Russian political expert Alexander
Sotnichenko told ArmInfo on Saturday.

“One of them is the United States. Now that the Americans have
strained relations with Russia, they are seeking to weaken its allies,
including Armenia, and to discredit any international projects in the
post-Soviet area. So, they may well be financing Armenian forces
opposing the existing status quo in Nagorno-Karabakh. The other
destabilizing factors are the oppositionists like the Pre-Parliament
and those criticizing Russian-Armenian relations after the tragedy in
Grumri. Many experts believe that this may be a sign of somebody
preparing to topple the ruling regime in Armenia,” Sotnichenko said.

Regarding Azerbaijan, he said that that country has a strong “party of
war” – an opposition force comprising a number of high-ranking
military officials and MPs. “They believe that now that Russia is
having problems with its Eurasian Economic Union and the Customs Union
projects, Azerbaijan’s military and economic dominance in the regions
can help it to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh problem by force.
Aliyev’s regime is hardly interested in this, but considering
Azerbaijan’s oil price-related problems, those wishing to solve the
country’s problems by means of a splendid little war may prevail,”
Sotnichenko said.

According to the expert, the passiveness of the OSCE Minsk Group makes
things even worse. “Their strategy is not to resolve the conflict but
to freeze it and to prevent a new war, but sooner or later it may fall
victim to some provocateurs,” Sotnichenko said.

As far as Turkey is concerned, he believes that the Turks are not
interested in high tensions in Nagorno-Karabakh. “They have lots of
unsolved political problems of their own. What they seek in the South
Caucasus is economic dominance and this can be attained only in case
of political stability. On top of this, the Turks enjoy quite good
partner ties with the Russians. So, they must be very careful in this
region so as not to spoil this partnership,” Sotnichenko said.

German-Armenians plan to submit petition to Chancellor

German-Armenians plan to submit petition to Chancellor

14:17, 7 February, 2015

YEREVAN, 7 FEBRUARY, ARMENPRESS. Within the frames of the events
dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide,
German-Armenians are planning on holding a protest near the Turkish
Embassy and organizing a march to the residence of the German
Chancellor to submit a petition. The Berlin-based Genocide Recognition
Task Force (GRTF) has also planned other events. This is what
Professor of the Free University of Berlin, member of the
Armenian Genocide Centennial Germany Committee, Dr. Jirair Kocharian
said in an interview with “Armenpress”.”The events will be held in
different cities across the country. From February 11 to May 28, there
will be a photo exhibition at the Anna Frank Educational Institution
in Frankfurt, and German scholar, Armenologist Tessa Hoffman will give
a lecture. On April 11, the translated versions of martyred writers
will be read during an event that we will organize with the Armenian
Church Union in Berlin. On April 18, the GRTF will organize a
commemorative vigil in front of the Turkish Embassy, as well as a
march to the residence of the Chancellor to submit a petition. On
April 24, two lectures will be given at the Marien Church in central
Berlin. The ceremonies will continue all week long,” Kocharian said in
detail.

According to Kocharian, the presence of the nearly 4 million Turks,
some of which are already citizens of Germany, as well as the
country’s political and economic interests and Turkey being an ally to
NATO serve as a reason for Germany’s position on the Armenian
Genocide. He recalls that in its decision in 2005, the Bundestag still
didn’t use the terms “Genocide” and “Deportation”, saying that Germany
signed the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the
Crime of Genocide on 22 February 1955 and that has a regressive force.
“Of course, this is just an excuse; otherwise, this law should have
applied to the Holocaust as well,”Kocharian underscored. According to
him,
Germany is escaping from responsibility for being an imperial
accomplice to sultan Turkey during WWI.

What Price Will Armenia Pay for Russian Loan?

What Price Will Armenia Pay for Russian Loan?

Hakob Badalyan, Political Commentator
Business – 07 February 2015, 13:52

During Hovik Abrahamyan’s visit to Moscow agreement on the Russian
loan of 270 million dollars to Armenia was signed. The money will be
spent on extending the operation of the Armenian nuclear plant by 10
years. Russia will also provide a grant of 30 million dollars.

Armenia needs this loan as water and air, at least to ensure financial
stability and prevent risks of collapse of the rate of the dram.

Practically, however, the activities aimed at extension of the term of
operation of the Armenian nuclear plant arouse questions. In
particularly, whether this work will not be used as an opportunity to
close the nuclear plant for a long time and leave Armenia heavily
reliant on electricity generated on Russian gas, which will boost
consumption of Russian gas in Armenia in implementation of the
notorious 2 December 2013 agreement with Gazprom.

The share of electricity generated on Russian gas has increased in the
energy sector of Armenia. Fears connected with the nuclear plant
intensified after the minister of energy Yervand Zakharyan announced
during the regular maintenance of the Nuclear Plant that problems have
come up, and there is a need for additional study.

And as electricity generated on gas increased, the price of
electricity increased accordingly. Of course, not only because of this
but also because of inefficient of management of energy companies, in
other words, corruption. And these companies belong to Russia.

Hence, on the one hand, the Russian loan of 270 million dollars is
important for ensuring the balance of currency. On the other hand, the
repair of the nuclear plant may be used for promoting the Russian
commercial interests in Armenia. By the way, Yervand Zakharyan has
announced recently that soon there may be a need to boost the price of
electricity.

It is possible that this is the price which Armenai will pay for the
Russian loan. Judging by information about the meeting of Hovik
Abrahamyan and Dmitry Medvedev, Armenia and Russia have not achieved
any other specific agreement.

And the government hopes to overcome the ongoing difficult period for
the economy of Armenia through foreign financial assistance. For this
purpose, new Eurobonds will be issued, though the falling rating of
the Armenian economy along with the falling rating of Russia and its
economy pose risks to selling them. In other words, the success of
Armenia’s Eurobonds depends on the situation of the key sponsor of
Armenia’s economy Russia. And its situation is not good hence the
Eurobonds seem to be a vague prospect.
